Gundula, I'm about to return A Guide to the Birds of East Africa to the library so you can order it if you like! It's brand new and still clean LOL! I promise I didn't get it dirty or barf on it.

Ha, ha, ha (I remember the episode where the library book you picked up had been barfed on, yuck, yuck, yuck).

Yes, I will NEVER forget that. So gross. I am tempted to get myself some cotton gloves for reading library books.

I always find that my fingers are quite grungy at times after reading library books, especially some of the older picture books.

message 4556: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lee, Gundula and Jeanette. You know I want a good library, but it seems there are advantages in not having one!. At least I don't have problems with barfy books.

When I lend my books to others. Some say! Yewww, there is black curly hair stuck in the binding! Could that be Oscar's?! Nobody else has black or curly hair in this household.

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments After years of not using a library because I prefer to own books, I finally joined the local library the other day. I haven't borrowed anything yet, but it's supposed to be the first step in curing me of my book buying addiction.

Now I hear about books being barfed on, grungy fingers and the need for cotton gloves! I'm starting to reconsider the whole plan. ;D

Sorry ladies! I hope I don't scare you off using the library. Generally, I think it's a wonderful service and feel very lucky to have access to all those free books. It's just occasionally you get some grungy copies. I had one very bad experience with the dried on barf but I've been using the library all my life and that's never happened before.

Kim, that's great that you just joined your local library. If you're on your toes, you should be able to get on the hold lists of new books and get a hold of copies in excellent condition. The online catalog systems are great now for ordering books!

message 4559: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments Lee, I put my first book on hold a couple of hours after I joined. Who knows how long it will be before I get it!

I grew up using libraries and all though my school and university years I certainly spent lots of time in them. It's just that I tend to return books late and if I really like them I want to own them and possibly make notes in them and re-read them in whole or in part. All of which makes me not the ideal library user. And these days I can get such bargains buying books online that it's very hard for me to resist! But I intend to try ...

Kim, I hope your first book comes quickly. I love owning books too. We are just going through a rather frugal period right now so I haven't purchased anything since last Christmas. I love seeing my books all lined up in there beauty and diversity on my shelves.

message 4561: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments Yes, I hope that my first book arrives quickly too, Lee. It's the latest Val McDermid and if it doesn't turn up soon I'm at risk of buying it. If I can I buy second hand through Abebooks, but this one won't be available second hand for a while, I think!

Oh how interesting. I've never read any of her books and I do like mysteries. I see she's written a few different series. Can you recommend one to start with?

message 4563: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments Lee, if you like series and don't mind serial murderers, then McDermid's best one is the series which starts with The Wire In The Blood. The book I've reserved is the most recent one in that series. She's also written some excellent stand alone novels, such as A Place of Execution, which is interesting and very atmospheric.

Thanks Kim, I'll check out your suggestions. I used to read lots of mysteries and I do enjoy them. I sometimes get squeamish if the descriptions are too graphic or involve children. Thanks for the recommendations.

Kimberly I'm now reading James Herriot's Favorite Dog Stories by James Herriot which has been on my TBR shelf since I was 8 so...13 years and I'll also be starting Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins

That gave me my first laugh of the day, but maybe I'm just that way! What is Oscar doing reading your books?

message 4567: by [deleted user] (new)

I go to the library for most of my books, and then I buy a book only if I really love it. I hate to spend good money on a book I don't enjoy. Used books have been through several hands, too. I try not to think about library books. It's only picture books that have given me a problem. And splattered cookbooks.

message 4568: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Jeanette, he is not reading, but I pat him and then turn the pages. I do not vacuum every darn day! .
Waking up with a laugh is super good medicine.

I said the above in realtion to getting "dirty, barfy, and also hairy" library books. I guess I would be one prohibited from using the library.

message 4569: by [deleted user] (new)

No one is prohibited from using the library, even if they return barfy books. It does seem that library use in Europe isn't what it is in the US. I was in the local library in Braunschweig once. And that was to donate books before we moved back to the US.

message 4570: by [deleted user] (new)

As for dog hair, Buddy sheds these short hairs, and they assemble themselves into dog hair tumbleweeds, and congregate under tables and things. I don't vacuum every day, either.

message 4571: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Nobody with a healthy mind bacuums every day. The best way to get rid of those hairballs on the floor is to open all the doors. They blow out. :0)

Shirley (shirleythekindlereader) After reading about library book germs....I think there should be a box of disposable gloves available at the door ...especially for older people.

I know I get my grocery cart out in the parking lot...less chance of LIVE germs.

very funny.....

It was a kid's book, if I remember Lee's story. I checked out a kid's book once that the previous patron must have dropped in the tub. I didn't notice until I got home that the paperboard cover was "spongy".

Chrissie I have just begun 36 Views of Mount Fuji: On Finding Myself in Japan. It was recommended to me by my GR friend, Gaeta, who lived in Japan for a while. On her recommendation I read the sample and was attracted by the thoughts presented in the small bit I had read. I always have seen Japan as a country where beauty is valued, but in the beginning of this book the author points out that in fact there is ugliness too. The modern cement building and flashing lights and electric wires all over the place are a part of present day Japan too. However, there is beauty too, you must just look for it. I did not have any trouble spotting it on my three week stay there. The spots of beauty are so startling that that is all you remember.

The author writes the book in the hope that her distance to the Japanese people and culture will give her a clear perspective. This thought was voiced by Hokusai. The title of the book refers back to Hokusai's painting of Mt. Fuji. Have you see his print depicting a Japanese drinking a cup of tea, where the mountain is only seen as a reflection in the tea cup? So I am reading this book b/c I believe I will enjoy and learn from the author's years spent living in Japan.

I just finished A Guide to the Birds of East Africa. It is not an ornithologial guide, as I so erroneously thought every time I saw it here at GR. No, it is about a group of bird interested people living in Kenya. It is humorous and delightful. It helps to be interested in birds. It is clearly a comfort read. Here is my spoiler-free review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
