Becca | 1608 comments I just finished Madame Bovary and I have to say I'm not a big fan. It made me reflect on the disillusionment most people experience after marriage or really any big change in their lives and also why our society seems to embrace divorce.

The story was well written, especially for the time the author lived, but it was a terrible story to read. I'm so glad I love my husband even if marriage and love wasn't everything I thought it would be.

Toni | 27 comments My favorite book I read this year (not YA) is The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. It is a memoir and it was really good. Also, I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which was good too!

Thanks for the recommendation. I'd heard really good things about it and was surprised to see it in the bargain bin at Borders about a year ago. I snatched it up at the time because, well, who doesn't love a bargain?!

Looking forward to reading it now!

Robyn Hawk (aflyonthewall) | 53 comments Definitely the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played with Fire would be my favorite non YA!

But I just finished the audio version of The Forgotten Garden and really loved it!

I've been contemplating picking up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Robyn. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. It'll be my next buy!

The audio is good on these also - but be warned there is sex and violence - Lizbeth Salander is about as strange and wonderful a character as I have seen - but prone to violence. If you were a punk rocker you will love her pierced dark nerdiness.

message 259: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Michelle - I think both Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Girl Who Played With Fire are better audio books because the narrator is Swedish. I listened to both on audio and thought the second was even better than the first. Peep listened to the first book on audio and then read the second book, and indicated she wished she listened to the second on audio to help with the translation. Also, as Robyn said it is for mature audiences only.

Couldn't agree more...I read the first book and listened to the second...trying to decide whether to read or listen to the third, but will probably listen to it!
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest

message 261: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I have already put myself on the hold list for Hornets' Nest at my digital library. I'm number 5! I don't even remember if it was for the audio version or the ebook, but I saw it and quickly clicked the HOLD button!

message 262: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Urg. I can't hold books until the library actually has them.

Heidi Bluemoon wrote: "grabbed the audio of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for my long journey home!"

Sweet.

message 264: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I am starting Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford tonight.

message 265: by Mindy (new)

Mindy (mindylu) | 82 comments I just finished Jane Eyre. I gave it three stars because I liked it. The language was beautiful and the story was sad and happy! It was a little slow but all in all I liked it.

I KNOW, RIGHT? It's so good... I saw it in the bookstore for a few years and always decided not to buy it, but once I DID, well, I was in novel-heaven.

I recently read my first Virginia Wolff, Mrs. Dalloway and I loved it.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Mindy, did you ever find an audio version of Wuthering Heights or are you planning to go with a hard copy of the book? Let me know what you think.

message 268: by Mindy (new)

Mindy (mindylu) | 82 comments Brittany, I have both versions. I will probably switch back and forth but not sure yet. I let you know. I am listening to the 4th Rangers Apprentice now cause I need a little change-up after Jane Eyre.

message 269: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Hey! I'm listening to the same book right now!

message 270: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I watched half of it on Netflix and it was much darker than I thought. I'll have to find some time to finish it.

message 271: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Wuthering Heights is too dramatic and depressing for me. I am more of a Jane Austen girl.

message 272: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Peep - Have you watched Lost in Austen on Netflix?

message 273: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (Reading is Better With Cupcakes) (imjustcupcake) | 14 comments Im currently reading My Sister's Keeper and I like it so far. I have seen the movie and it is fairly different. I would recommend it to you guys, also I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Societyand I really liked it.

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Heidi wrote: "Peep - Have you watched Lost in Austen on Netflix?"

Yes! Did you like it? I thought it was good. Really long though! Some parts I didn't like, and I didn't care for Elizabeth (was that her name?).

What was the name of the one you recommended?

message 275: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I know what you are saying, but I think it was worth watching. I did not like the ending though! Not sure what else I recommended. Who knows!

message 276: by Mindy (new)

Mindy (mindylu) | 82 comments Becca, I am liking it so far but I have enjoyed all of them in the series to this point. I can download them for free from my library! I love it.

message 277: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Heidi, I think that's why I didn't like her, I didn't like how she reacted in the end when the main girl found her. I've watched it twice. I thought the casting was pretty good. Mr. Bingley (?) was spot on. His sister was, too. Ugh, now I want to watch it again.

message 278: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Just skip the ending!

message 279: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Since I have no loyalty, that won't be a problem!

message 280: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I started re-watching it today :)

message 281: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Just started The Diary of Mattie Spenser by Sandra Dallas last night.

message 282: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Reading Robinson Crusoe right now.

I recommended that to you. Hope it's not disappointing. I loved it and so did my mom and sister. :)

message 284: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Shannen I think I listed you in the "recommended by" area :) So far, so good. It is short (which I like) so I hope to finish it by Friday.

message 285: by [deleted user] (new)

I never remember who recommends a book. I thought it was a really touching story. Can't wait to hear what you think (good or bad). ;)

message 286: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I can never remember who recommended things either Shannen. I know people on this group recommended Never After but I couldn't remember who did.

message 287: by [deleted user] (new)

I know. As soon as I had book to my TBR list, I should type in who recommended it.

Heidi Shannen wrote: "I know. As soon as I had book to my TBR list, I should type in who recommended it."

I started doing that Shannen, but I still forget!

message 289: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Books by Jodi Picoult are good. They make you sit there and think "what would I have done in that situation?, could I have done what the character did? " . Reading memoirs is fun.

message 290: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackie1301) | 75 comments Mentioned it somewhere before: I do two series at the moment:

- Succubus (Georgina Kincaid) - 5 books
- Guild Hunter - 2 books so far

They are very adult, not smutty but adult and I really like them. Great story lines...

message 291: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Benefiel (staceyhowland) Jackie, I like the Vampire Academy books a lot, but it took me forever to finish the first Georgina Kincaid and I read a sample of the next on my Kindle, but didn't buy it. Just couldn't get into it. Possibly could be due to paranormal overload. :)

Right now I'm reading Bloodroot and I alternately like it and wish I was done with it already. It's written in first person from several different characters and I'm feeling like I need a break from all the telling for some dialogue and action. But...the voices are unique and the descriptions are vivid.
It got really good reviews which may have influenced why I'm being a little meh about it.

message 292: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Just finished Emma by Jane Austen. Another great Austen novel and I'm really glad I read it. I've always loved the movie (with Gwen Paltrow) and the book gave so much more depth and meaning to the story.

message 293: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Emma is my second favorite JA book. If you have not, please watch the recent BBC adaptation that was on PBS staring Jonny Lee Miller. It is way better IMHO.

message 294: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I'll look it up. I saw a BBC version a few years ago and thought it was terrible, but if they have a new one I would love to watch it.

message 295: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I just saw it (Emma) within the last year. It was filmed in 2009 and debuted in 2010 here in the US.

message 296: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Then I definitely haven't seen it. On my tbwatched list.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I just read Soulless & Changeless by Gail Carriger. Both are very good NOT YA books. They have flavors of chick-lit which I never read but enough fantasy/steampunk/awesome MC that it balances out nicely. It was a nice change from my normal YA, definitely switched the gears.

message 298: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Are you talking about The Dresden Files Bluemoon? If so, Melodie warned me that the first book sucks, but they get much better, so be warned.

message 299: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Becca I hope you like it! Cassi - I have been looking at that parasol series, glad to know you liked it.

message 300: by Laura (new)

Laura | 114 comments Stacey - I started reading Bloodroot a couple of months ago, and even though I was really enjoying the narrative voices and the descriptions, I ended up putting it on hold because I kept getting pulled into faster-paced novels. I plan on finishing it pretty soon. That is, if I don't, um, get distracted again.

Have you finished it?
