On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first human in outer space and the first to orbit the Earth. In honor of this event in history...Read a novel featuring space exploration/travel/astronauts (Ex. 2001: A Space Odyssey) a non-fiction book about space/astronomy (Ex. Astronomy: A Beginner's Guide to the Universe), OR a biography/autobiography/memoir of an astronaut (Ex. Sky Walking: An Astronaut's Memoir).

If you need suggestions OR have suggestions for books to read for this task post them here.

Petra Would Children of God be okay? It involves space travel to another planet but I'm not sure how much of the story involves the travelling.

I hope so, because I want to read Life, the Universe and Everything... :)

Sara, that is what I am planning on reading as well, so I really hope that it is allowed!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Cynthia are any books from The Hitchhiker's guide allowed?

TMBookluvr (tmb1981) | 271 comments that would be great because i read the first one and started the second one forever ago and would love to get back into it.

I've never read them but as long as there is some space travel they count.

I'll take it.

Sarah wrote: "Would The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy work here?"

Yes

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Yeah, there's DEFINITELY space travel involved. And probably some time travel, just to make things more interesting... ;)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 306 comments I think these would work:

Space--James Michener
The Right Stuff
Rocket Boys

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments I saw that someone has Ender's Game for this task. Will that work?

message 13: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments There's definitely space travel in that one.

Thanks. I have been meaning to read it for a while. Gosh, I hate it when there are like two books that you want to read for the same task and then you have to pick...

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments There's always the reading-in-bed task...

That is true. Plus like 12 tasks that haven't been assigned yet.

message 17: by Katy (new)

Katy | 725 comments Ooooh, if Rocket Boys is allowed, I highly recommend it! It's such a great book. I just looked and saw that he's also written other books, including a thriller type book about astronauts! So I might go for that...

message 18: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments You could say Star Wars or Star Trek books fit.

message 19: by Rach (new)

Rach (rachlovestv) | 261 comments Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13 by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger would also work - it's the book that the movie Apollo 13 was based on.

Angela | 632 comments Does time-travel work for this task?

No

Lisa (lbhick) | 1043 comments Would The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell or Cyclops (Dirk Pitt, #8) by Clive Cussler work?

The Sparrow definitely, Cyclops it doesn't sound as if the space travel takes place during or is the main focus of the book but if in fact it is then that would work as well.
