SPRING/SUMMER 2010: Leaderboard & Completed Tasks (Updated 8/19)
I finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See and Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie for 25.1, the country evolution challenge. Snow Flower is set in mid 19th century in Hunan Province, China, and Balzac is set in Sichuan Province during the cultural revolution in the late 1960's-70's. Although SF was well written, B was by far the better of the two, so beautiful.I also read Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris for 10.3, the beach read. Definitely my least favorite book of the challenge.

I loved both of these books, but I enjoyed EL&IC a bit more. A Certain Slant of Light took me a while to get into because I was having trouble getting a feel for the two main characters, but I loved Oskar in EL&IC from the very first page.

25.8—Elizabeth Bard's Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, with Recipes. (Finished Diana Abu-Jaber's The Language of Baklava: A Memoir.) 25 points.I loved the cover for Bard's memoir but hated the one for Abu-Jaber's. I ultimately liked both books, but definitely preferred Bard's. Her writing is delightfully humorous, while still poignant and wry.

20-1. Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger (6/28); Copy of Post: I liked it overall, mostly the portion before Valentina's plan. I thought it was rather weak of her to get away from her sister in that way (not to mention the pain she thoughtlessly inflicted on her family). I don't think if she was strong enough to leave her twin while alive she would have been strong enough to live a life on her own after gaining her body back afterwards (if the plan had gone as scheduled). I really disliked the ending. After spending so much time with Robert, we weren't shown where he ends up or given any kind of conclusive ending to his "journey". It also ended with my least favorite character, Elspeth. My favorite character was Martin, I ended up caring about his progress more than most everybody but Robert.
