Another very long series is the Carpanthian series by Christine Feehan. There are like over 20 in that series. I bought number 17 which I didn't know that until I looked it up on here otherwise I wouldn't have bought it since I haven't even started that series.

I do read the Carpanthian series, some are better than others. I think #21 comes out this summer. She does have a lot of these that are in anthologies so they aren't full books.

I'm starting to find a pattern with these books. It's almost like the girl is getting rapped in each one. Ya, so she's found her lifemate, her other half in the context of the book, and the guy always just has to have her. Well, the girl always says no the first time even though part of her feels some connection to the guy (duh, it's her other half...i get it...) but the guy has his way with her anyway. I'm sorry! She said no! To continue constitutes rape. And this lady got awards for her romantic stories. I'm sorry, but rape isn't romance. Now, in the later ones I happened to have read this wasn't the case, but in books 1,2, and 4 it is. (If I remember properly, this was different in book 3 at least). So, afterward the girl is always pissed off and I would be too, but by the end of the story all is well. In the context of the story one half can't survive without the other, but if they're truly that connected the guy should stop and control his "animal instincts." Can authors avoid having their main characters be raped by someone that loves them and then have everything be okay? It seems like people could get the idea that it's okay as long as the person who did it is their "soul mate". If they're your soul mate they'd back off and let you go at your own pace.

I agree with what you are saying about the first few books, but you need to look at what was popular in fiction at the time. The first books were written over 10 years ago and there seemed to be a push for this type of thing then. Do I think it is right, no, but when every other author is writing like that it doesn't seem so out of the norm. I know another author, Susan Elizabeth Phillips wrote a book based on the time around the civil war with similar themes, but then re-released it recently and changed that up because as a society we have changed.

It still sucks that rape sells for a romance book back then. I figured I'd check them out at the library to see if they moved away from the theme since I had read one further on in the series that was good, but that I wouldn't buy them since I didn't want to donate money to that theme. It's sad that as humans we've actually had to work hard to progress past issues like that. (We're still fighting them.)We're supposed to be the intelligent species. Absolutely frightening.

I read Good Omens back in college... it's quite a way back in my memory, but I seem to recall it being entertaining.

The books do move away from the rape issue, but in a lot of them the Carpathian kidnap the girl because they feel the need to protect them.

Don't worry about not finishing a book, you need a break.

I'm almost done with Katie MacAlister's Silver Dragons series. They're a little better than the Aisling Gray series, but you have to read her series first since it's a spin-off. It's just a little better though, not a lot better. Maybe it's because May isn't as clueless as Aisling was.

I like some of the Terry Pratchett books, but others just confuse me!

It was better than some of the previous ones because I didn't feel like the girl was being forced into sex. Thank goodness.

It has the same formula as the rest of the series so far:
A Carpathian male is close to ending their life because it sucks and they don't want to turn into a vampire, they find their life-mate, she doesn't want to be forced into a series relationship that fast, she gets into it anyway, a vampire wants to steal the girl and/or kill the male (generally both), the vampire dies and they live happily ever after, despite the girl being somewhat smothered by an over protective husband.

I just finished Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception, which was boring, Shiver is much better from this author, and The Iron King which was pretty good.

I finished reading Fire and listening to Kitty Raises Hell. I am now listening to Territory and cross stitching while I listen. I don't think that I could get through Territory if I were reading it. Very slow paced and overly descriptive (for my tastes), but well written. The book is 320 pages and the audiobook is 13 hours. Maybe the readers are just extra slow. The Kitty book's audios are around 8 hours unabridged.

Paula, what did you think of Fire? I have the audiobook, but want to buy the book as well to go on my shelf next to Graceling.

Darcy, I didn't care for Lament either. I have the Iron King and can't wait to read it!

I thought that Fire was good, but it dragged in some areas and I couldn't buy many of the premises upon which the book was based. I do cut YA books a lot of slack, since these book are written for a much younger age. If I were 14, I think I would love Fire. I'd say that Fire was better than Lament.

I agree that Shiver was better than Lament.

The Kitty books are cheesy, but you love them anyway.
I've had Graceling and Fire on my shelf for a while now and I've never picked them up. I'm not sure what's kept me.

Heather you should bump up Graceling and Fire, I think you will really like them. I love the Kitty books, I like how she has changed over the series. I did just pick up Divine by Mistake from the library today, but have 3 more to read before I get to it.

The library books keep me from them for some reason. Then, there's always something that jumps in front of them (like the Evernight that comes out tomorrow). I didn't read today. I watched the Oscars instead. It feels so strange. =)

It's an interesting story. It took forever to build, but it managed to stay interesting. I think it could have been done a little better, but it was still good. 3.5 stars.

I will probably still check it out, but not be in any rush.

I find I rarely buy books anymore unless they are already favorites that I read. I just read too fast that I honestly can't afford it. I end up being a heavy library user. It is a good thing the library system where I live is a good one.

I've been trying to do that too. I pick up a new book daily. I think I end up with anywhere from 12-25 out at one time.

I am bad right now, I have 18 things out right now. The good thing is the majority of them are 300 page books and those go fast, but when I do that I really have to wonder about myself and then make a mental note to not to that again.

I read this weekend and LOVED it! It seemed to borrow a lot from other series, but it was still original. Kind of like a mix of Harry Potter and Evernight with a dash of Beautiful Creatures thrown in.

. It's interesting, but it drifts from the theme of the series a bit. It's supposed to be The Lady versus some evil being but she wasn't the motivation behind this one.

I'm starting to get sick and it's killing my motivation to read. The pages start spinning when I try to read.

I thought it had an important message. I wish that there had been an epilogue or that there was going to be a second book (I haven't heard news either way). I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next.

I saw Hex Hall and almost picked it up. I'm trying so hard not to buy books, but I doubt the library has it.


I read books 1 and 2 of the Dark Ones by Katie MacAlister. They're kind of like a tame Carpathians story. Some adult parts, but not as elaborate as the Carpathian stories. I feel like she's referencing Feehan specifically sometimes, which I thought was funny. They're cute fluff, but better than her dragon series.
I also read book 3 of Percy Jackson. It's about equal to the previous ones.
