Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I haven't heard of that one. I better go add it to my never ending TBR list!

message 902: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Vivian said:'Lisa, I was looking at Firefly Lane by the same author the other day. Have you read that by any chance?'

Actually I havent' Vivian. Winter Garden was the first I read from this author.

Move on to the Glass series. It's a spin-off.

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I just finished Avempartha (The Riyria Revelations, #2) by Michael J. Sullivan , which is a free download for Nook (and Kindle I think). Sullivan is an indy author (for now) and I was very impressed with this one. This is actually the second book in the series, and I started it because I was assured it could stand alone. It did that very well, but I liked it so much I will definitely be reading the rest in the series.

If you like epic fantasy that is full of action/adventure, give this one a shot.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments I guess I'm desperate to download one of the free versions until they're republished in fall 2011.

message 906: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I just saw it is not free for the Kindle. I know that at the Fantasy Book Club, Robin posts links to the GR members discounted books. I believe Avempartha is still free there. If not get Nook for pc and download it from there. There are some spoilers about what happened in the first book, but from what I read in reviews the second has a much higher rating. I wanted to make sure I would liked the books before I bought them.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments That's the only reason I haven't gotten them. For some reason indy authors and I rarely mix well.

message 908: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Yeah, I have that problem too. But these are extremely well written, IMO. If I just grabbed it and read it I wouldn't have thought it was an indy author.

message 909: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I read Matched (Matched #1) by Ally Condie and I liked it, but I didn't really fall for the love story. I think I was expecting more action or something.

I also read Heist Society (Heist Society, #1) by Ally Carter and it was about the same. I liked it, but I found I didn't really attach to the characters.

They were still both fast and fun reads.

Now I am reading The Crown Conspiracy (The Riyria Revelations, #1) by Michael J. Sullivan which is the first book to the series I was talking about above.

I was also going to start Bayou Moon (The Edge, #2) by Ilona Andrews . It has been a long time since I read the first one, so I forgot a lot. Oh well, I think I will be ok.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Oh, how did I not recommend White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black in this group? I loved it - quite different than the usual YA fare.

message 911: by Jasmine (last edited Dec 17, 2010 04:04PM) (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments I just read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and it was ehhhh. It kinda flew over my head and had no impact whatsoever, but it wasn't exactly boring. . .I just didn't really care for it that much. I liked the premise of the story but felt that the author couldn't pull it off that well. I've read a lot better rape victim stories. I feel like if I were younger (maybe in 8th/9th grade) I'd like this more. . .I wish I could've read this as a school book because I think it'd be interesting to dissect symbolisms and all in the book.

message 912: by Angela (new)

Angela B Jasmine I read a different book by her, Winter Girls, and I thought she did a wonderful job so I'm suprised you say that. I have always meant to get to this one but never have

message 913: by Angela (new)

Angela B I finished Magic Study (Study, #2) by Maria V. Snyder lastnight and I really liked it! I can't wait to read the 3rd and final book but at the same time am kinda putting it off because I don't want the series to get over even if there is a spin off series!

message 914: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 432 comments Stacia wrote: "Oh, how did I not recommend White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black in this group? I loved it - quite different than the usual YA fare."

I really liked that one, too! The male protagonist was one of the better ones I've read recently in YA.

message 915: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (peanutty222) I just read The Book of Luke by Jenny O'Connell and it was o.k. It was pretty juvenile and petty and i kept flipping past pages to get to the end.

message 916: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments I read The Teen Vogue Handbook by Teen Vogue it was ok it cliamed it wold tell you everything you needed to know about getting into fashion but it didnt it only touched on Models,Designers,Stylist, Make up artists and Photographers thats not even the tip of the iceberg.

I am still trying to read Last Sacrafice I find it annoying when i get into the action of what Rose and Demitri are doing and then she switches to Lissas head to see some boring crap when she switches to Lissa I put the book down it just erks me uugh.

message 917: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 89 comments I just read Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick and it was... a little predictable but still interesting and good enough that I've started reading the next one in the series. Not a five star read but still good.

I know a lot of people like Speak, so who knows, maybe you'll enjoy it. :) And I knew I saw her name somewhere before! Wintergirls is on my to-read list. . .I'll probably give it a try. . .I hope I like it more than Speak.

message 919: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I didn't really care for Speak either.

message 920: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
I liked Speak, but I as I was reading it I could actually see the issues that someone who didn't like it would have with the story. They didn't bother me, but I always love reading something and cringing as I hit points I know people will take issue with. Sometimes I'm that person, but for some reason it didn't get to me while reading Speak.
I just read Storm Born (Dark Swan, #1) by Richelle Mead and I enjoyed it. I predicted quite a bit in the beginning, but it was still a fun read.

message 921: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments My friend keeps bugging me to read Storm Born, but I keep putting it off for some reason. I promised I will read it early in the new year.

IA I started this but couldn't finish because I thought the plot was so petty and dumb, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something really bad was going to happen and give me hardcore secondhand embarrasment

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments Just finished with Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James and I really liked it. It was a super quick read and I had a great time with it. If I ever want to re-read it I might get the ebook version. I can see myself rereading certain parts.

Irene Hollimon | 89 comments I just read Crescendo (Hush, Hush, #2) by Becca Fitzpatrick and it was... just all right. The first one was better and I don't think I'll be reading the third one.

Did you try any of her other books? I really liked all of them too.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Enchanted Again by Nancy Madore The pretty cover sucked me in. I was expecting fun fairy tales with a naughty twist - instead it was just creepy fetish erotica. This book was just odd and I'm almost thinking 2 stars might have been too generous.

*hiding in case the author comes around to pull a Shera smackdown on me*

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Glad I read it, because its a classic and it was pretty good, but from all the raves I was expecting a lot more. Excited to watch the adaptations now though (Colin Firth lake scene here i come)

I'm reading Something About You by Julie James right now, and I have the other book by her at home too. :D I'm loving Something About You! It certainly is a lot more sexualy explicit than I expected, but I have no qualms about that. Julie James is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. :) And it doesn't hurt that the covers for her books are great.

@ Stacia, that cover is so pretty! Too bad I'd never give that book a read from your description.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments In one story, the guy made the girl have sex with a gargoyle statue.

It was disturbing. Not my kind of fairy tale.

message 931: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Oh, um, wow... That takes creepiness and erotica to a whole new level.

message 932: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 89 comments I just read Queen of Shadows (Shadow World, #1) by Dianne Sylvan and it was... ooh la la FABULOUS!!!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments I keep hearing that. Good thing it's going to end up my Q book for the alphabet read then!

Penelope & Prince Charming (Nvengaria, #1) by Jennifer Ashley

I'm a little confused. I liked the story even thought it was a bit cookie cuter and predictable, but I wasn't certain sex issues that were discussed. I have come a long way in losening up on what I read, but there sre some things I'm just not wanting to know about.

message 935: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (peanutty222) I just read Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison and it was.............
Well.......
I had a really hard time reviewing this book. The begining and end were really good. The middle was not so much. It was a heart-wrenching story which I didn't find out until I started crying at the end. It snuck up one me. I didn't except it to end the way it did. I would recommend it, but keep in mind it's probably more for high school aged girls.

message 936: by Tya (new)

Tya | 846 comments I just read Misguided Angel the fifth(?) in the Blue Bloods series. I know that series need to grow, and the best way to do that is to add new characters. But random characters in the last third of the book? Ending the book? Maybe if she had been introduced earlier I would have liked her more. But she didn't so I don't. And, if de la Cruz was trying to make Mimi a more sympathetic character she utterly failed with me.

I just finished that one last night and was so meh... about it. It was very segmented into 2 halves.

I did like Mimi and Oliver though, it was the high point of the book.

message 938: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I haven't been reading at all. By the time the kids go to bed my eyes have been tired. I watch tv though, lol. I guess because I don't really have to focus.

message 942: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Go in with very low expectations.

message 943: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 89 comments I just read Nightwalker (Dark Days, #1) by Jocelynn Drake and it was... pretty darn good. It was a good, solid urban fantasy. Nothing new. It didn't break any new territory or rock the world but... it was good. I'll be reading the next in the series.
Call me slow but it took me a little while to catch on that naturi are fairies. Nightwalkers of course are vampires. I didn't see any gain from renaming things from their traditional names.

message 944: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 89 comments About Misguided Angel... I'm getting a little tired of young adult books and reading about high school kids but still the Blue Bloods series has kind of grown on me and I liked Misguided Angel.

I always go into them with low expectations and then hope I'll be pleasantly suprised.

message 946: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments For me the series has gotten worse with each book. I should probably give them up, but for some reason I can't. It is a good think that they are short and quick reads.

message 947: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
I think she's become a better writer with each one. She's learning how to play out the end of her books better with each book. The first one had a good build and then just dropped way too fast.

For a Few Demons More (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #5) by Kim Harrison

I really liked it, my fave book in the series so far. Also I was suprised at how devastated I was at the ending (I couldn't stop crying).
