The first 50 or so pages are a bit rought, but I really liked it after that. It's really original and I liked the whole idea. Haven't read the other books that are out yet, but I have bought them. Hope that helps.

I should post my review . . .

Paula (pauldajo) I finished listening to A Great and Terrible Beauty. I enjoyed the story. The snobby Victorian attitude of the upper claas was a bit overbearing. Gemma's brother was mostly concerned about Gemma's purity after their mother was murdered in the streets of Bombay. Tom worried more about her reputation than the trauma Gemma went through watching her mother die. All that matters is that the family name isn't ruin by scandle. Well, Gemma isn't too concerned with the rules of society, though she knows the rules. She has some pretty exciting magical stuff to keep her busy.

Hmm.. more concerned with the family name than with emotions? Sounds like my mother.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments @ Paula,

I liked the Gemma Doyle trilogy. It was different than anything I'd read before.

It's been a month and I am still struggling with this book. I don't find it bad, but I have to push myself to read it. I think it's because I was expecting a YA paranormal book, but most of it seems to focus on the 'friendship' between the 4 girls, and while it is a (painfully) realistic portrayal of how most girls act I just don't care to read it. Had enough backstabbing and petty games in high school to last me a lifetime haha

Paula (pauldajo) Zuleika, I understand what you mean. I enjoyed listening to the 1st book, but the cattiness was sad. Felicity was certainly an alpha bitch. I wonder if I would have liked the book as much if I read it. I always like listening to stories. I'll probably continue with the series, if the audios are priced to my liking.

Stacia, I agree that the Gemma Doyle universe was different and I did like it. I don't quite understand it all, but I assume that the next two books will clarify the confusion.

Heather, My mom didn't give a damn about the family name! Sometimes that's good, sometimes that's not so good.

message 857: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I had a really hard time getting through the first Gemma Doyle book. The second was better, but even though it has been about a year, I haven't picked up the third.

I finished the first Tairen Soul and I liked it. I found that I kept waiting for something exciting to happen though, and when nothing did I was a bit let down.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments I finished Crescendo and it was okay I gave it a 4 star.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Thinking back on it now, if I had read Gemma Doyle after having read some other historicals, it probably wouldn't have been as enjoyable for me. Because it was the first type of YA historical/fantasy hybrid that I had read, I really liked it.

It's sort of like Twilight. If I had read Twilight after reading everything else that I have in the past year, it would have been completely mediocre to me. But...because I read it before all of the other PNRs, it was a good read and will always hold a special place in my heart.

message 860: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (peanutty222) I just finished Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins , I think it's the fifth time I've read it now....
I'm voting it as my favorite book of the year, definately the best of the series.

Stacia - EXACTLY!!!
Carrie - I felt that way too. It made more sense when someone told me book 1 and 2 are really the original book 1.

message 862: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Yeah, I heard that too (probably from you or Stacia). It makes me feel better about going on to the second book.

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
I think it was Stacia.

message 864: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I thought the second was better than the first too, but then was disappointed with the last one.

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
It was so adorable and funny. I was pretty much smiling the whole time I was reading. I loved the banter between Anna and Etienne and I really recommend this book to any YA lit fan

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Finished Path of Fatea bit ago. Wasn't really impressed. Definitely not for Epic Fantasy readers who have read a lot.

Oh no! I haven't read that one, but I've tried this author's other fantasy series and liked the first one, The Cipher, but I haven't read the others yet.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments I haven't read anything else by her. Already bought her Urban Fantasy book, so I stil plan on reading that one.

message 869: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Her UF book was really good.

message 870: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I finally finished The Necromancer. It was ok.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Glad to hear it Darcy! I was eyeballing it last night with a little trepidation.

No you should be good with that one. I tried the other and it was one I gave up. The second UF one comes out this month and I am really looking forward to it.

message 873: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) What's the title to the UF you are talking about?

message 874: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Bitter Night, very good. I would recommend it.

message 875: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Ah, I have that book. It's buried in my TBR pile. Maybe I should rescue it. I liked the summary.

message 876: by Jessica B (new)

Jessica B | 292 comments I finished Last Sacrifice yesterday. I enjoyed but it wasn't the spectacular ending I had imagined. Still enjoyable... but Book 4 stays my favourite of the series.

Bump it up for sure!

Book 4 is my favorite too. I gave Last Sacrifice a 5, but the more I think about it, I probably should have given it a 4. There were some things at the end that annoyed me that had nothing to do with Dimitri or Adrian.

Stacia! E-mail me and tell me if everyone lives. I'm afraid to start the book until I know.
Please!

message 880: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments OMG, Heather you are horrible! *GASP*

The third, Shadow Kiss, was my favourite. I was actually shaking with adrenaline when I finished it.

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
3 was my favorite too.

message 882: by Angela (new)

Angela B I just finished with Playing With Fire (Silver Dragons, #1) by Katie MacAlister and I really liked it. I was worried because I loved Aisling so much that I might be disappointed with a book that wasn't centered around her but I was pleasantly surprised! I will certainly be reading more Katie MacAlister in the future

message 883: by Jessica B (new)

Jessica B | 292 comments Just finished The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) by Kelley Armstrong . I enjoyed it. I look forward to reading the next one.

I know what you mean. I gave it 5 stars too but I think it was more out of loyalty to the series then anything else. I was expecting a big bang of an ending instead it was more of a small puff of smoke.

message 885: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Now I am not so excited to read it. Maybe that is a good thing, the build up could kill it.

message 886: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments For me, I would say go in with low expectations, then you might be pleasantly surprised.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Did you read Fever yet?

Nichole ~Bookaholic~ (nicholebookaholic) | 185 comments Sabrina Fair wrote: "I just read Magic Bleeds and it was wonderful. *sighs*

I've finished Mercy, CLV, Night Huntress, Dark Swan, Georgina Kincaid, and Kate Daniels this year. Where do you go from there?..."

Have you tried the Edge series by Ilona Andrews? There are currently two books in the series

message 889: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Stacia and Nichole, those were the first two I was going to suggest! Loved the Elemental Assassin series, Gin rocks almost as much as Kate. Also the Guild Hunters and Jane Yellowrock were good reads (I only read the first book in each so far though).

There are so many other series I want to read that I have heard good things about like Allie Beckstrom and the Envy series by Joss Ware (aka Colleen Gleason who also pens the Gardella Vampires series which is another series I really like). I could go on and on, lol.

Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning , Bloodfever (Fever, #2) by Karen Marie Moning , Faefever (Fever, #3) by Karen Marie Moning , Dreamfever (Fever, #4) by Karen Marie Moning , Shadowfever (Fever, #5) by Karen Marie Moning

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Fever is the best one to read right now because of January's final installment coming up.

It won't be as much to read the series after it's finished because speculating theories is half of the fun.

message 892: by Angela (new)

Angela B I would also recommend the Rachel Morgan Series by Kim Harrison if you haven't read that the first book is Dead Witch Walking (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison

and

I always have to suggest Anita Blake first book is Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton

message 893: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) I'm reading first of Elemental Assassin now and really enjoying it, so I'd second that recommendation :)

I'm hoping to get to that one soon myself. :D

message 895: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I know this isn't the normal book in this group, but I have to say this:

I finished Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah today and I have to say WOW! This book is sad, but in the kind of way with a car wreck. You know the kind you just can't stop looking at? You want to stop looking, but you just can't. This is how i felt about this book. It was really sad to read, but I just couldn't put it down.

message 896: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Lisa, I added it to my TBR list. It sounds really good.

A book that gave me a similar reading experience was Willow by Julia Hoban . It was a WOW read and I loved it enough to give it 5 stars, but it was so hard to read at times. But at the same time, even though the subject matter was so traumatic I couldn't stop reading.

message 897: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) Lisa, I was looking at Firefly Lane by the same author the other day. Have you read that by any chance?

message 898: by Jessica B (new)

Jessica B | 292 comments I just finished Fire Study (Study, #3) by Maria V. Snyder . And I loved it. I loved the whole trilogy. I'm sad it is over.

Okay, you just got so many recs but I feel like I have to add Mind Games (The Disillusionists Trilogy, #1) by Carolyn Crane because i don't hear enough people talking about it and its great haha

IA with everything else posted, but the Guild Hunters, On The Edge and Fever series especially

message 900: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I keep meaning to try that one, but just haven't gotten around to it. I will have to push it up.
