Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments I know it is a book site but let's talk movies for a minute. I love watching movies. Good movies, bad movies, scary movies, movies that make you cry, it doesn't matter to me. Since I'm heading out shortly to go see Up In the Air, I thought I'd post a movie survey.

1. How often do you go to the movies?
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies?
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit?
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them?
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles?
6. Favorite genre?
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES?
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first?
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking?
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey?

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments 1) Try to go at least once a month
2) I don't rent, but I buy at least a couple a month
3) Theatrical release
4) Deleted Scenes and gag reels, always watch those
5) Subtitles - can't stand dubbing it really distracts me.
6) Anything really (except horror, or excessive violence - I don't like lots of blood or things that make me jump), I do have a soft spot for comic book movies, fantasy/sci fi.
7) That's got to be a toss up between Star Trek, New Moon (saw it twice) and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (3 times). New Moon just edges it (I was very proud of myself for not crying in the cinema, unlike when I read the book).
8) Tough one that, I would normally say read first, but I found that spoilt it with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (couldn't get as angry as I wanted to).
9) Movies I'm embarrassed to admit I like? Too many to mention, but to give you a few:

National Treasure (both of them, they're harmless fun)
Van Helsing (Any film where Hugh Jackman gets his top off is OK by me)
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

10) Yes, way too many

Diane | 18 comments 1. How often do you go to the movies? Not often enough. I love the whole experience of it.
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies? Less often than I did. There's usually something on TV I want to see.
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit? Theatrical Relase... then the Director's Cut
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them? I watch all of them... am a geek and love trivia and quotes.
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles? Subtitles... always
6. Favorite genre? Historical/ Action movies
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES? The Dark Knight.... I still miss Heath
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first? Not choosy either way although it's rare for me to see a movie of a book I've already read.
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking? Hudson Hawk.... yes... yes I know but there you have it. Although Charlotte I have to say that yet to see a movie where Hugh Jackman doesn't take his shirt off.... and thank the Lord for that... Van Helsing also rates pretty highly !
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey?
Nah.... this was fun.

3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit? I like both theatrical release & director's cut
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them? Sometimes but not for all movies
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles? No
6. Favorite genre? Action & Romance toss up between the two
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES? Gran Torino
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first? read first
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking? Little Miss Sunshine
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey? I dont think so

message 5: by Emily (new)

Emily 1. How often do you go to the movies?:
Not often enough for my liking. The price of admission paired with my distinct lack of funds makes things rather difficult.

2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies?
All. The. TIME. *LoL* I work part time in a video store, so I get movies there and from the library both. I'm pretty much addicted. *LoL*

3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit?
Director's cut, for the most part.

4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them?
If I enjoy the movie immensely or am a fan of the actors/director involved, definitely. And I usually get around to watching them if I own a movie. But when I rent them, I don't always check out everything.

5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles?
Subtitles. I'm a snob about not watching foreign movies that have been dubbed. I just can't enjoy it.

6. Favorite genre?
Everything. If I HAD to pick, probably horror/suspense or action. But I like movies in EVERY genre.

7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES?
Inglorious Basterds (I'm a Tarantino FREAK) or Law Abiding Citizen (I ADORE Gerard Butler...for obvious reasons. ;^D hehe).

8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first?
I'd LOVE to be able to say I read first all the time, but sadly, I usually see the movies first. *LoL* I'm so bad.

9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking?
I have no shame. *LoL* I'm sure some of the cheesy action movies I like (Best of the Best, Tango and Cash among others) would raise the eyebrows of some, but I find that taste is subjective. I just like what I like and have fun with it.

and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey?
Definitely not. Bring on the surveys! *LoL*

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments 1. How often do you go to the movies? Very rarely
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies? Netflix is my main source for movies and TV shows. I don't really go to the moviehouse and we don't have cable or regular TV in the house.
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit? Theatrical release and/or director's cut. Don't really like anything that is incomplete. It's like reading an abridged book.
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them? Depends on my mood and if I have the time
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles? English is not my native tongue, but when I do watch foreign films, I don't really have a preference between "dubbed" and subtitles in English. If it's good, I'll probably watch in both versions.
6. Favorite genre? action/adventure followed by romantic comedy
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES? I think I went to the movies only once last year, and it was the latest Harry Potter.
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first? doesn't matter with me
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking? can't think of one, but then, I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to movies.
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey? this was fun. I wouldn't mind answering similar types.

Mel W (melw) | 981 comments 1. How often do you go to the movies? Hardly ever. I tend to wait until they come out on DVD.
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies? Buy, and maybe once every couple of months, and its usually movies the kids want.
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit? Director's cut if possible or theatrical release.
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them? Rarely.
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles? Subtitles.
6. Favorite genre? Action or comedy.
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES? Ummm, I only remember seeing one movie last year (The Time Traveler's Wife) and it definitely wasn't a favourite - not my choice and not my type of movie, although the eye candy (Eric Bana) kind of made up for it :)
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first? Read first. Probably would have helped my perception of The Time Traveler's Wife if I had read the book. I found it difficult to follow but that could also have been due to the censoring.
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking? If I could think of one, I wouldn't be embarrassed to admit to liking it :)
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey? Not all it - it's been fun.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments How rude of me to ask and not answer as well, so here's mine:

1. How often do you go to the movies?
About once a month. Usually with the family but sometimes just with the wife.
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies?
Usually once a week. I have maybe 300 or so DVD's that I own.
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit?
See it in theater is best, otherwise, director's cut.
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them?
About half the time.
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles?
Subtitles. Friends don't let friends watch dubbed movies.
6. Favorite genre?
Mixed bag. Maybe comedies or horror mix.
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES?
Zombieland was the most fun my family had at the movies in '09.
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first?
Usually read first. Then I can make fun of the movie.
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking?
Flash Gordon.
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey?
Yep. Keep it to three and then you'll get more discussion.

message 10: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) 1. How often do you go to the movies?
Maybe once or twice a year--not able to sit without moving that long.

2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies?
Um, a LOT--Netflix, and buy, mostly.

3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit?
Director's cut if at all possible. I want to see what the DIRECTOR had in mind, not what the releasing companies decided to show.

4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them?
Sometimes--if I liked the movie or something about the movie (costumes, FX, etc) or if I can't figure out WHO an actor is and what he's done before.

5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles?
Subtitles--ALWAYS subtitles. The only "dubbed" movie that I've ever watched that was worth it was Woody Allen's "What's Up Tigerlily" and that's more because the script he used had absolutely NOTHING to do with the movie it was appended to.
6. Favorite genre?
Everything except slasher flicks. I do not see the point in Friday the 13th, never mind Friday the 13th part 500.

7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES?
Er did Journey to the Centre of the Earth come out last year? I know that Twilight did. Enjoyed both, but, um, since they were ALSO the only movies I saw in theatres, well. . .

8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first?
read first, always read first--because there are times where if you don't already know the story, then God help you figure out what the heck is going on. (Can we all say the original Dino DeLaurentis DUNE?)

9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking?
Um, ok, I know I'm strange--but I really do LOVE Grade Z movies. I am a fan of--Plan 9 from Outer Space (the original) Flash Gordon (yeah, yeah, its too campy for words), ALL those Japanese monster movies from the 50's and 60's (hey, those things are GREAT. Watching Godzilla stomp his way through a balsa wood Tokyo. Great cinema)

10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey? Um, nope--at least, not if you don't mind reading novel length replies. :o)

Erin (erin-b) 1. How often do you go to the movies?
Not as often as I would like, tickets are too expensive. I go maybe once a month.
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies?
All the time. It's how I see most movies now.
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit?
Theatrical release or directors cut.
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them?
Sometimes, though it depends on the movie.
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles?
Subtitles. I hate watching movies that are dubbed, it irritates me.
6. Favorite genre?
comedy, fantasy, drama
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES?
Star Trek or Up
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first?
I generally try to read the book first when I can.
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking?
I don't know that it's a favorite, but my sister and I pulled out an old video tape of Spice World for new years and enjoyed watching it. Such a ridiculous movie.
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey?

5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles? Subtitles.
6. Favorite genre? Don't have any.

message 14: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) Photojim--Ron Miller--who worked in the art department for the de Laurentis movie, said that you KNEW that the distributing company did a real butchering of a movie when the director AND the producer go to court to sue to try to get their names removed from the movie because of those cuts.

Now, the expanded, director's cut was GREAT. But the theatrical release of that movie sucked. I mean, I had friends who could practically recite Dune word for word--and they were sitting in the theatre, copies of book in hand going "Ok, what the HECK did they just do and why does it make no sense?"

But Dune the movie came out just after 2010 bombed so badly. So the releasing company decided that the problem with 2010 was the LENGTH. And went in and slashed out 45 minutes or so of Dune, without regard to what they were cutting, how it totally screwed up the story, etc.

Er, ok, sorry, just after listening to Ron rant about it for all these years, I tend to kind of channel him. :o)

Steph (angel4492) | 386 comments 1. How often do you go to the movies?
Used to be at least once a week (when in the US), now not often
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies?
Ditto #1, now rarely, but we do get 8MM releases of "recently released" movies from the military once a month, which is great and much appreciated!
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit?
We like to see director's cut of our favorites, but typically buy when it's first available and that's usually the "theatrical release". Unrated & Uncuts are always fun too.
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them?
Rarely, only if I really love a movie.
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles?
When you live in a foreign country (like Moldova - between Ukraine & Romania), your only option is a movie that's dubbed or subtitled. When ya wanna watch, you'll take what you can get. :)
6. Favorite genre?
Horror, baby! Also, shoot-um-up action and chick flicks
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES?
Harry Potter
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first?
I've always seen the movie first, but recently I read The Time Traveler's Wife before seeing the movie. Since I'm reading a lot more, maybe this will become the norm.
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking?
None. I proudly wave my freak flag! LOL!

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) I tried to talk my daughter into wearing Lady V's "war" costume at a con we attend. But she refused. Sigh, rotten kids (and she's 35, so its not like I could FORCE her, right?) lol. Some costumes she's willing to wear, others not so much. But at least my grandkids are willing to let me dress them up at cons. :o) They did a skit for a competition where they went as "Captain Peace and the Evil Despot" and she DID dress up as "Mom Superhero" for that. The boys are 2 years apart--but they LOOK like twins. So their costumes for that were mirror images, and HER costume was a combination of the 2. It really was a cute skit, even if I DO say so myself.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments I'm not sure which costume the "war" costume would be. However, I can say that I can't think of a single Thandie newton costume this is not smokin' hot in the Riddick movie.

Although I'm not sure it's the costumes as much as Thandie herself that makes them smokin' hot :)

I've always wanted to do one of the Riddick costumes for a con, but I'm afraid I could never pull off Dame Vaako. I was thinking more along the lines of Kyra, but without a Riddick with me, noone would know who I was! Being recognized is half the fun.

I've been looking for some fabric like that for AGES. The spinal bones in silver would be a pain, but I figure that I can always "fudge" those (maybe embroidered) but that fabric, that I can't fudge. Sigh, some day I'll find it. :o)

Now the white and green outfit that she wears when she's questioning Dame Judi--that would be much easier to re-create.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Been to the movies twice in the past ten days.

First was Up In the Air with George Clooney. I loved it. My wife hated it. I thought it was an uplifting tale of discovery and redemption. She thought it a depressing journey of betrayal and indifference. Still an interesting movie experience. I give it 8/10 sky miles.

Second was Sherlock Holmes with Downey and Law. I found the plot a bit ridiculous, the special effects bombastic, the pacing too stop and go, and the cinematography dark. My wife loved it. My boys (15 & 16 YO) thought it fun. I didn't say it wasn't fun. I was just solidly in the 'meh' camp as far as merit goes. I give it 6/10 extraneous fight scenes.

Nairabell | 433 comments Nope - I mean the Britney Spears one. It's so bad it's funnier than most comedies, though I don't think it's supposed to be!

message 36: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) Sara--yes, I did do it. :o) I then sent it to the 6 y.o. granddaughter of a friend. The poor thing was bitten by a brown recluse--and then developed a staph infection at the sight of the bite. She's had 4 operations on the leg so far--and the dr's are thinking she's going to need 1 more to finally get rid of all the necrotic tissue. I also did a dragon (oriental) and sent her that too.

~Sara~ | 667 comments Photojim - I love your rating system! I'm with your wife on Sherlock. I thought it was thoroughly entertaining, but I am fairly easy to entertain. I'm interested in Up In the Air now. Usually the best movies are the ones that are either loved or hated. I'll have to check it out.

Ann aka Iftcan - That's so sad! I read an article in Reader's Digest when I was 14 or so about the brown recluse being found in Canada. We don't get many venomous things up here, so that article scared the crap out of me! I can't imagine going through that. She's probably taking it better then I would. Children always amaze me; they deal with so many things better then most adults I know!
Do you have a picture of the dragon? I'd love to see it.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Apparently this is the week for me to watch Zooey Deschanel movies. Gigantic and The Go-Getter were both on Starz. Yes, I like these quirky slice of life movies.

Eulogy on the other hand was so dark and funny. I need to watch that again!

Kami (katmiv) 1. I don't go as often as I'd like. It has to be a movie I really really want to see for me to hit up the theatre.
2. I'll rent movies on average about 3 times a month.
3. I'm a fan of the Director's Cut
4. I love when my favorite actors do commentaries, my favorite special feature is the Gag Reel.
5. Subtitles. I love to hear the language their actually speaking, plus I can tolerate reading throughout a movie a lot easier than not having the words match the lips.
6. I'm a big Drama/Suspense fan as of late. But I also enjoy a good action flick or chick flick.
7. The Hangover
8. Read first, but am going to try to watch first this year.
9. I credit Cruel Intentions as being one of my favorite movies...
10. Nope. I think 10 is the perfect survey number.

message 42: by Lotte_ladybird (new)

Lotte_ladybird 1. How often do you go to the movies? whenever there's something I want to watch. Sometimes a few times a month sometimes I don't go for months
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies? Hardly ever. My co-workers and a couple of my friends are big movie buffs so we all borrow from each other
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit? Directors Cut
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them? Depends on the movie. Usually, yes
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles? Well, being Danish I only watch foreign (as I think the Danish ones suck). But Subtitles - can't stand the dubbing!
6. Favorite genre? It really depends on my mood. I tend to prefer old black and white movies from the 1940's though
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES? Twilight
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first? Either works for me
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking? I'm not really embarrassed by anything I watch
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey? No! Surveys rock!

tosca (catatonichataholic) | 742 comments 1. How often do you go to the movies?
Once every 2 months or so.
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies?
Weekly - I get them for free as library staff
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit?
Director's cut every time
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them?
Absolutely! It adds to the whole experience.
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles?
Subtitles. Dub overs always sound like the old martial arts movies and twice as comical :)
6. Favorite genre?
Period drama, musicals and romantic comedies
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES?
Saw a few things but nothing that comes to mind. Eek.
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first?
Am a total bookgirl so read first then watch. Only been 2 instances in which I did it back-to-front. These days it's so hard to keep up.
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking?
My sibling just said, 'No sadly, there's nothing that embarrasses you anymore.' LOL
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey?

Never :-)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Tomorrow I get to watch one of my favorite cheesy movies, Groundhog Day! I've been to Punxsutawney and this makes laugh every year on groundhog day.

AmandaG (amandag3) | 254 comments 1. How often do you go to the movies? Not very often at all since we had the baby (a year ago). I'll go watch a movie I really want to see, but other than that, it's probably once every 4 or 5 months.
2. How often do you rent/library/buy/Netflix movies? I'm a big fan of Redbox, and will get a movie whenever there's something I really want to watch.
3. Theatrical release/director's cut/family friendly edit? Usually dissapointed by the Director's Cut. I will say theatrical release.
4. Extras on DVD (commentary, deleted scenes, special features, etc.): do you watch them? Love them. Especially gag reels.
5. Foreign films: dubbed in your native tongue or subtitles? subtitles
6. Favorite genre? Depends on my mood. I love a good action movie with funny lines and a sweet romance thrown in.
7. Favorite movie you saw last year IN THE THEATRES? Sorry HP 6, but I will say Star Trek.
8. Book adaptations: read first or watch first? Most of the time I'll have already read the book, but it's usually better to see the movie then read the book IMO. The movie hardly ever lives up to the book.
9. Guilty pleasure: favorite movie that you are embarrassed to admit to liking? Can't think of one...
and to round out the second handful...
10. Is 10 too many questions for an impromptu survey? Nope.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Watched 500 Days of Summer last night with my wife. It was different than expected. I was expecting a rom-com or an outright love story. It is neither of those things. My wife still enjoyed it more than I did.
