What are you reading?
I know what you mean with Elena, in the book she seems like a stuck up popular girl, but it gets better... I just imagine her as the girl from the series haha, then it feels better to me, and I imagine Stefan as the hunk from the series to!
On my computer its such quick reads! I'm so scared its not all there!!!
Thanks for letting me know about Bridget Jones... I'll wait for you :)

I am currently reading Shutter Island By Dennis Lehane, so far I like it, particular his writing style. I havent seen the film yet as I wanted to read the book first so I have no idea what it is about only that the criminally insane are involved.
Ooh, I need to re-read Shutter Island as well. I enjoyed it very much the first time, and Dennis Lehane is a fantastic crime/mystery writer. It's not as exciting as his Kenzie/Gennaro series, but it's a more complex, unusual mystery.I've heard good things about the film, can't wait to see it.
Ah I'd love to read that! Also I would love to see the movie but like you say I'd rather read the book first, and I hear only good things about it!!!
Hey Lauren you dont perhaps have an ebook of it???
I hope so :)
Or I'll search it on that cool site you always refer me to, I love it by the way :)

Ah boo... but I'll try some sites Emma sent me to... just cant remember the name right now
No, don't worry :) It's a dark mystery, but not a horror. Some of the people in the asylum are a bit creepy, but I wouldn't call it a scary book.
Re-reading Shutter Island. A nice easy read, but a good mystery novel as well. Since I know what's going on this time around, it's really cool to pick up all the little details of the mystery that you wouldn't notice during a first read.I was actually quite chuffed with myself the first time I read this, because the book does give some clues to the mystery and I figured two of them out, hehe. I didn't manage to figure out the whole plot, but having picked up some of the clues gave me a few good guesses and made it more interesting.
I love it when that happens either in a film or in a book. There are just so many things that you miss first time around. That has happened to me a few times, but a book has to be really good before I will re-read. There are just too many books out there.
True, there are so many books, but in some cases you can't appreciate a book until you've read it at least twice and made notes in the margins. I love it when a book makes you want to write loads of notes about it though.I keeping wanting to underline significant phrases and clues in Shutter Island, but I know there are a couple of people who want to read it after me, and I don't want to spoil it for them.
I love to re-read a series of books before the movie comes out, just to be able to compare the two then, especially the Harry Potter books and movies. The Books seem to have much more detail (for obvious reasons, and its much thicker) and the movie leaves much of it out, which makes it good to read the book to
Just finished Shutter Island on the bus this morning. Still couldn't put it down even though I've read it before. A brilliant mystery. Upped my rating from four stars to five.
Just started Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, a sci fi classic I've been meaning to read for while.Quite the page turner so far, and great reading for the bus.
Finished

(much much better than the first, very fast paced and action packed) , started

This is a book that is definately on my TBR list, along with Frank Herbert this is as you rightly say a classic sci-fi book and one that I have wanted to read for awhile now.
I finished reading Shutter Island today, really enjoyed it. But I am just trying to figure out if I missed something on the last page? When Teddy is talking to chuck. Seeing as you have read it twice Lauren maybe you can help me out. Teddy mentioned something being carried in a white bag? It is really irritating me the thought that I didnt quite get it??
Lu, the story gets better, and Elena in the book actually gets less pathetic if I could say that... You'll be surprised...
So am I! And I like it because its quick reads... I like that about a story
Just finished Ender's Game and started First Love by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, another of the books from the Penguin Great Loves series (we read Doomed Love in February).
Lauren wrote: "Just finished Ender's Game and started First Love by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, another of the books from the Penguin Great Loves series (we read Doomed ..."What did you think of Enders game Lauren? You seem to have quite similar tastes to me as far as books go and I try not to limit the books that I read to a particular genre.
I just finished All together dead by Charlaine harris, was a very easy read like all Sookie books not to mention enjoyable as ever.
I'm divided about Ender's Game. On the one hand, it's an undeniably entertaining story, if a little predictable. Ender is thrown into challenge after challenge, keeping the story interesting, even though you start to realise that whatever happens, he's going to win. And of course, you're keen to know what's going to happen in the war with the aliens. What really bothers me about the book is that it seems very much pro-war and pro-violence. The idea is that when facing an enemy who is intent on hurting you, you must not only react with violence, you must crush the enemy. It's very brutal, especially considering that most of the characters are between 6 and 12 years old. It also feels like the kind of propaganda used to justify things like the American war against Iraq, where the Americans portray themselves as heroes forced to be shockingly violent because their enemy is simply evil. There is no consideration of sociopolitical causes, and supposedly no way out except through violence.
So on the one hand I was entertained, on the other I was somewhat angry and disgusted by the ideas portrayed. Still thinking about it though, perhaps I'm missing something... Will write a review soon.
Finished First Love. Good story, it would have been a better choice for the February read - more interesting and easier to read.Started Only Forward by Michael Marshall Smith. Very weird, but I like my books to be weird. Funny too :)

We'll have to nominate it :)

Currently reading Some Girls bite By Chloe NeillI am totally engrossed in this and the world that Chloe Neill has created around the first book in this series and I cant remember the last time I was this addicted since probably reading Vampire Academy. The characters here are great; Everyone is distinct, bursting with personality. All the relationships between the characters are really well worked out, and this is one of those books where the dialogue feels natural and the wit really is funny.
It has great potential for a Great series!
Lu wrote: "Will put it on my "next" list!"I would definately recommend it Lu. Just finished it yesterday and will start reading the 2nd book sometime today. At first the title put me off "some girls bite" sounds a bit cheesy doesnt it? But I would say that I enjoyed this book as much as Vampire Academy and thats saying something!
Hope the next books turns out aswell.

You should really read the other books in the series as well. Initially in Ender's Game it focuses more on how the military actually conditioned the kids towards violence etc.
The later novels really focus on a different aspect and follows Ender in his later life and how he deals with his actions.
It's been a while since I've read the series. I'm due for a re-read.

I'm somewhat apprehensive to read the others, except perhaps Speaker for the Dead. I've heard that the quality of the later novels becomes pretty poor. More importantly though, I've read up a little on Card since, and I disagree strongly with some of his political and personal beliefs, such as his support of George Bush in the war against Iraq (framed, conveniently, as the 'War on Terror', good vs. evil), his view that we shouldn't take action against global warming, anti-gay beliefs, and support of Intelligent Design as opposed to evolution. I'm now not surprised that Ender's Game reminded me so much of America's war with Iraq.
Normally I'm not one to avoid an author because of their personal and political beliefs, but Scott Card really bothers me. I may read some more of the series anyway, as I always like to see both sides of an issue, but I won't jump at the chance.
I actually find that Ender's remorse is just a way of softening his otherwise brutal actions, making them more palatable, ensuring he is seen as the good guy despite what he does.
Finished Only Forward - great story, pretty weird. It's quite funny at the start, but gets darker and darker as the mystery builds. The main character Stark, is really cool. He's a really tough guy, but kind of relaxed, and his cat Spangle is on the short list of friends who he "would revenge with extreme and irrevocable violence." I can't not love that :)Now reading The James Tiptree Award Anthology 3: Subversive Stories about Sex and Gender. I've had this for a while, never finished it, but I'm in a mood for sci fi and fantasy :)
Maximum Ride is a weird book...
Niecole wrote: "Maximum Ride is a weird book..."I just not for the life of me get into this book, I have my 50 page rule, so after hat I give a book up. I dont mind weird books but this one did nothing for at all. There are just so many books that I want read so I dont hang onto a book like I used to.
I am going to start reading The last Song By Nicholas Sparks. Looking forward to it.
