Lauren Smith It's a romance/drama about a caterer, Claire Waverly, who's cooking is sort of magical - she knows all the properties of plants and flowers, and uses them to make her dishes have specific effects on people, like nostalgia for the past. All the cooking in the book makes you really hungry for weird things like lavender cupcakes...
Anyway Claire is falling for her neighbour, but she's scared of being in a relationship so she keeps trying to give him dishes to make him fall out of love with her.

In the meantime, her estranged sister has come to stay with her after running away from an abusive husband. She now has to face the fact that her high school sweetheart married someone else.

What's cool about the book is that the Waverly's all have something magical about them - Claire has it in her cooking, there's an aunt or something who always gives people something that they need, and there's an enchanted apple tree in the garden. And it's cool to see all the effects that Claire's food has.

Anyway, that's just some of the plot. Check out the reviews on the page, it'll give you a better idea. On the whole though, it's a really nice read.

Its definitely not a war time story or a love story tho lol, but i know you liked the VA series! Its also a medium read.

And thats about all i can think of right now :(

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

Nope havent, but its on my library list now...
Got to get some reading material for this weekend...
And they have forecast some rain, so lets hope hehe

message 57: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm reading Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff. I downloaded the e-book the other day and started reading it at work... and couldn't stop.

It's about a juvenile delinquent/criminal who becomes an assassin for a secret agency. She's been arrested for murder and she's telling a psychiatrist her story.

A bit unbelievable at times, but VERY entertaining.

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh that sounds so cool
where did you download it from?

I just finished Island of Lost girls, was very sad but good, about a girl who gets ubducted, and then the whole story unravels...

message 61: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith My pleasure :)

Just a word of warning - if you download books from that site, don't take more than 5 (per computer) for a two week period. Those are the terms and conditions. If you keep trying to download more than 5 for two weeks you will get cut off.

Lol, I haven't finished reading Nervous Conditions either (we got as prescribed reading in 2nd year English and I just never got to read it). It's very very good apparently. I'm gonna make an effort to finish reading it this month (if not, this year) =D

message 65: by Lerize (new)

Lerize (atalanta) | 70 comments I'm bussy reading Angels & Demons, Captian Correli's Mandolin, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Green Mile. After all that I really just want to chill with some good ol' chick lit (sletstories) hehehehe =D

I also find myself reading when I should actually be hard at work with an assingment or something ... Reading just calms me and distracts me when I'm really tense or stressed: it's the perfect escape =D

I'd recommend Captain Correli's Mandolin, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Girl who played Go and The English Patient which take place during WW2. For something a little older I recommend Shogun (Set in Japan round about the 18th Cent I think) and Francine Rivers's the Mark of the Lion Trilogy (Set in Rome during the First Century). Ooooh and check out Payton Lee's free ebook Five Star Affair

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Lerize...
Ooh so I finished Nervous Conditions, and it was really good you know, I didnt think it would be, but it was, and it turned out I really liked it.

I just finished Island of lost girls now, and now I'm reading Her Name Was Lola by Russell Hoban and its really a very weird story, this guy, well he talks to his mind as if its a friend...

I very much want to read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden and there's this bookstore I go to in town thats got it, so I want to spoil myself and get it!!! :)

How is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson so far?

message 68: by Emma (new)

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments Hi Niecole, Memoirs of a Geisha is one of my favourite all time books. I just loved it ! I just recently read Stieg Larsons "The Girl with the Dragon tattoo" and I had very mixed feeligns about it. It took forever for the plot to get going and at one point I got extremely bored but carried on, the book does pick up and I did enjoy it. There are better mystery crime books out there, and I still dont understand the hype with this book.

I am currently reading The Other Boleyn Girl By Phillippa Gregory, I am really enjoying this book as I love history especially British.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

Oooh I read The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory twice and loved it, but dont read to many of her books if you do love History, she gets boring in some of her books...
I also love history, and especially British, and I have an obsesion with the Royals...
If you do enjoy The other Boleyn Girl you should read more about Henry VIII...

Yes, I so badly want to buy Memoirs, but cant find one anywhere, and I'm looking for a second hand copy, theres just something about those.

Ok, so I love crime novels, but then I might not read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, when a book doesnt get to the good stuff pretty soon I usually dont want to read it anymore...

sounds really good...

message 86: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith So far, rather disappointed with Bodily Harm, which started off well. Now it's just kind of boring, and Atwood's tendency to write passive female protagonists really isn't helping...

Picked up The Rain Before It Falls by Jonathan Coe, as it looks much more promising. I love books about dark secrets...

I just wanted to ad that I'm nearly done with A child called it and its one of the most touching stories i've ever read! If you want to read a true storie about a child who survived abuse and what mothers are capable of please do read it, but its a tear jerker

message 92: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Just finished Bodily Harm (boring, but might give it another try one day if I find an intriguing analysis/review).

Still reading The Rain Before It Falls and I started re-reading The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus, Margaret Atwood's take on the story of Penelope and Odysseus, told from Penelope's perspective, and that of her 12 maids who were hanged by Odysseus and Telemachus.
A nice quick read, and a good story.

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

Oooh Whats it about Lauren? I've never heard about this story

message 94: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Niecole wrote: "Oooh Whats it about Lauren? I've never heard about this story"

Well, Odysseus married Penelope, Helen of Troy's cousin, and took her to live in his home, Ithaca, when she was about 15. Then he left to fight in the Trojan War, and supposedly spent about 10 years fighting there, and another 10 trying to get home.

Penelope is left alone trying to run her home, while hearing stories of how Odysseus is seducing goddesses and whatnot. Their son, Telemachus, is growing up and getting out of control. There are also a bunch of suitors who have assumed Odysseus is dead and are trying to force Penelope to marry one of them so they can get hold of her money and property.

The story of how Penelope wards off the suitors is famous - she told them she would marry after weaving a shroud, but she'd weave it during the day and then unravel it every night so it was never completed.

Penelope's always portrayed as the ultimate loyal wife as a result, but Atwood tells a more human story. In her intro she states that she was curious about what Penelope was actually up to, and why her 12 maids were hanged. I also like the bits she writes about Penelope in the underworld, in the centuries after she's died, and how she feels about the way she's portrayed in the myth.

It's quite short, you can finish it in about two or three hours. The e-book is at http://truly-free.org if you want it, although there are some small mistakes in the text.

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)
