"Nice to meet you too, Caleb," Kynton said, drawing out each word. He rolled his eyes to emphasize the annoyance in his tone and posture. He thought it was a nice touch. Wait, so this boy is in Slytherin? For a moment a touch of envy went through him. If he's friends with Iris and Iris is "nice," then this boy must also be "nice" and he doesn't seem at all like a Slytherin. So how did HE get in and I'm a Hufflepuff? Then Kynton reminded himself that his House was obviously a good one, too.

Caleb nodded with a small but genuine smile. Tristin seemed to be a bit more friendly than Kynton, but he'd at least returned the niceties, so that was something. "Mind if I tag along?" He asked hesitantly. "If not, that's alright, of course, but if it wouldn't be a bother..." He winced internally and resisted the urge to bite his lip. After so long of not really being in touch with his friends, he felt sort of out of place and rather foolish.

"I don't mind," Iris shook her head. Then she remembered that they had actually been about to give up. She looked at Kynton, remembering that he'd grown tired of their "hopeless” escapades. “Wait, Kynton, did you have something you had to do? Because this could be saved for another day, really, if you have something important up your sleeve.” She looked at him earnestly, giving him the chance to escape that she knew he’d been dying for ever since she’d decided to bother him in the Great Hall. Iris didn’t want to irritate him too much in the first day. She wanted to be able to come back and bother him again. Except, perhaps she could do without the part where she was bothersome.

Kynton shuffled his feet. Looking at his hands, he opened his mouth once or twice. "Eh, well, I guess, I really have nothing else to do. Whatever," he mumbled. He was irked with himself for his indecision, and especially for showing it. He didn't want to hang out with these annoying idiots - so why was the chance of being mercifully on his own again so unappealing?

Caleb nodded. "Well, I think I saw Medea in the library earlier, if you'd like to find her. Or maybe it was Gwen... Either way, there's sure to be somebody in the library, if you want to look there... or not, or if you already did, then..." Caleb let out a breath, slightly exasperated. "Sorry. Sleep deprived. Do you think it would be a good idea to check the library?"

Kynton laughed, but it sure didn't sound amused. "Up for it? Sure. If you're willing to put up with me if I decide to come."

Iris bit her lip, pondering her response. She couldnt' say Of course we'll put up with you!, because, of course, it was not cool having to be 'put up with.'

"What are you talking about?" Iris decided naive always worked. "Let's go!" Then the abrupt subject change cut out time for people to try and cure her naivity. Oh yes, she gave an internal nod. She had it all figured out.

Kynton almost smiled reflexively at her, but he quickly cleared his face. He shrugged. "Alright, let's go then. I guess I'l stick around." He kept his eyes carefully disinterested and away from her's. He didn't look at Caleb or Tristin either, preferring to let them think he didn't care one way or another.

Okay, so, ast summer, I guess, the twins were at home with their mom and dad and there was some sort of freak fire (which wasn't really an accident, it was BAD GUYS!) and they got out okay except Caleb got stuck, so their mom went back in to get him and then she got stuck, I guess, and she got hurt really bad and went into a coma and was in the hospital, but then during Christmas break (I think?) there was some sort of problem in the hospital and there was another fire, and their mom was killed, or at least that's what everybody thinks, really the death eaters have her.

I think that was all one sentence. I'm sorry. Like I said, giddy.))

Caleb smiled slightly. "Lead the way," he told Iris.

((Ohh, I remember now! I mean, I knew everything about the first fire. I just didn't remember the Christmas break thing. So Avery and Caleb think their mom is dead, but really the Death Eaters faked another fire and kidnapped her because of Ariadne's vision of the "Muggleborn" (Lyra) telling her about Volos - right? It's all coming back to me now! ^^ ))

"Alright," Iris grinned, noting the forcedness in Caleb's smile. She didn't say anything because it wasn't the time nor her place. "Come hither all." She beckoned dramatically for them to follow down the corridor.

Caleb smiled geniuinely this time at Iris. She was really like a burst of sunshine in a gloomy day, a brilliant friend. Caleb followed her a few paces behind. "How have you been?" He asked.

Iris bit her lip. She was fine now, there was no need to complain about her holiday. Besides it hadn't even been that bad. Don't be so whiny, she told herself. "Pretty good. And your holiday?"

Listening to Caleb and Iris talk, Kynton glared at the floor as they walked along. He supposed that he could strike up a conversation with Tristin, but he told himself he wasn't that bored. Just lonely... a thought whispered. He ignored it.

Caleb smiled a little easier, grateful for her prudence, and nodded. He pulled a small clump of cat fur off his shoulder and blew it off his hands. "Yeah, it'll be nice to get back into routine. Are you?"

He cleared his throat to go on, but something stopped him. "But - yeah, I like that class," he mumbled in a kinder tone.

Caleb nodded, the corner of his mouth. "Charms is great too. And I'd be worried about me, too, don't worry," he said to Kynton, his tone friendly and slightly amused. "I hope we get to do more magic this term in Defense. That's probably my favorite part. Learning about the creatures is pretty fun, too, though."

Iris bit back a smile at Kynton's mumbled afterthought. He was trying to be mean, really, but somewhere inside of him there was a kinder side. Nosy as she was, Iris was determined to break him...to help him, that was. She was glad they were all getting along for the moment. Having to watch her step and deal with tempers got rather tiring. "I've been looking forward to Defense too," Iris commented. "It's my brother's favorite class."
