Thanks, I appreciate that. I recently retired after a 40-year career as a college writing professor. I am loving retirement. I have all the time in the world now to devote to three of my lifelong passions: travel (both nationally and internationally), reading, and writing. I can't believe that I have so much time not to do the things I have always wanted to do. I just recently discovered Goodreads. I think I will enjoy living here.

I think Goodreads is the best place online to be if you are passionate about reading like most of us. And this group is all about creating a community that welcomes readers who enjoy many genres.

Namely, Pippi Longstocking and Winnie-the-Pooh. And just recently, on October 14, it was the 85th Anniversary of the book Winnie-the-Pooh. Cheers!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Tayyab. Welcome to the group. Thanks for sharing with us your two all time favorite comfort read books. Both books are already on our bookshelves, which means we have members who also love these books!

Roz Hi, I'm Roz and like everyone here I love to read. I'll read just about anything but looking around I see there are some genres I've never even heard of. Right now I'm reading Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. For me a confort read is a book I could read again and again. A book to curl up with in a comfy chair with a cup of tea on a snowy day, a fire going in the fireplace. Delicious! My go-to books include the entire Outlander series (I've reread it twice so far and I'll have to read it again before I get to the next one in the series. Can't wait. I also loved The Invisible Bridge. If any of you haven't read it yet, it's wonderful.
I looked around at the different posts and comments and think I'm going to like it here; so much going on, fun, not too serious or stuffy, just people who love books.
A few months ago I bought a Kindle. I can take it to work and read on my break or during lunch. I like the idea of being able to carry hundreds of books in one light package. But I like holding books too. The weight of the book, turning the pages is comforting and familiar, so I have those too.

Hi Roz, welcome! You're right, we are not stuffy at all, we love to chat about books and all sorts of other fun things. I read and loved The Invisible Bridge last year. I think it's a fantastic book.

message 1312: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Roz, So glad you found us. Welcome to the group. I'm dying to read The Invisible Bridge; I loved Julie Orringer's book of short stories: How to Breathe Underwater: Stories, even though the stories were really, really dark.

message 1319: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) Hi – I'm Tracey (as it says on the tin), and I trailed Kim here. (Not a stalker! Really!) I wonder if I read the phrase "comfort books" somewhere, or if that's just such a common-sense name for the books that make you feel better that everyone calls them that, not just me. My long-standing comfort books include my old friends by Jane Austen (especially Persuasion), Dorothy L. Sayers, Robin McKinley, E. Nesbit, Edward Eager, Helene Hanff, Anne Lamott – and, most especially, J.R.R. Tolkien and L.M. Montgomery. (I'm still surprised there isn't a serious Tolkien group on Goodreads – or maybe I've just missed 'em.) I look forward to settling in here!

“My definition of good literature is that which can be read by an educated reader, and reread with increased pleasure.”
― Gene Wolfe

message 1320: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Tracey. Welcome to the group! Glad that Kim helped you find us.

Maybe you should also start a J.R.R. Tolkien Goodreads' group. ;-)

message 1321: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Tracey,

Welcome!! I know that there are a few Tolkien groups, but most of them are not serious and rather into roll playing etc. (sigh). But, since you are another L.M. Montgomery fan (yay), you simply MUST check out the "Kindred Spirits" group on Goodreads (it's the reason I joined GR in the first place); it's a wonderful group.

message 1322: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) Gundula, I recognize your name from Kindred Spirits; I haven't posted much, but I lurk. It is a lovely group.

That's exactly what I meant about the Tolkien groups I've seen; part of the intro message for one of them said something about how the founder hadn't read the trilogy. ?!?

Thank you both for the welcome!

I signed onto a few Tolkien groups and then left most of them because the threads were mostly just plain silly and yeah, the fact that some of the moderators had not even read the trilogy (and were not intending to read it) kind of turned me off (and I don't like role playing at all and most of the groups devote quite a lot of threads to this).

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 112 comments Hello fellow readaholics! I am excited to join Comfort Reads and learn more about the books others go to for solace, pleasure, de-stressing, and the like. Similar to fellow members, my comfort reads vary depending on my mood and the type of comfort I'm seeking.

In general, when I think of "comfort" I am drawn to books which create an escape from reality. My favorite places to retire to are ones filled with hope, inspiration, whimsy, glimmers of magic, and anything with sparkles. I enjoy fantasy worlds which use real-world settings as their canvas and then sprinkle in other-worldly ingredients. (I’m not really sure if there’s a name for the genre. They’re not really sci-fi since they are in the real world, but they’re not really straight fiction either since they have magic and paranormal in them. Perhaps they are termed “fantasy.”)

I lean strongly toward young adult settings since they also provide an escape from the responsibilities and drama of adult life. This is not to imply YA reads are without their own unique challenges and drama, rather I prefer to re-experience and make it through the YA world than the adult one. I’ve already traveled the rocky terrain of YA life once, and I know I can survive it again so it’s easy to escape into that time period and experience it from either another point-of-view or with fondness reliving stories similar to my own. :o)

Some of my favorite escapes are through the means of audio collections including the Harry Potter series, The Chronicles of Narnia, and the Twilight series. I also, of late, have been favoring the audio for A Discovery of Witches and The Night Circus.

I look forward to learning more about others and their comfort reads as well as finding new magical escapes for my shelves.

Krista, welcome to Comfort Reads! What an eloquent introduction. Many of us love to escape with the type of young adult fiction you so beautifully describe. However, our Young Adult book thread is way down at the bottom of the page so it doesn't always get much attention. Our currently reading and daily chat threads are a great way to jump into the conversation and get to know members. We look forward to chatting more with you!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Sheila. Welcome to the group. I think you'll fit right in. We have members who enjoy a huge variety of genres, and sometimes it's also nice to stick with old comforts. What are some of the genres/books you read as comfort reads?

Hi Sheila, I love what you said! I think you will find some really interesting comfort reads here. Our members have diverse tastes and it's wonderful to try something new.

message 1338: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (schmoozy) | 5 comments Hi Lisa and Lee. Thank you for the warm welcome! Some of the genres I gravitate toward are fiction, non-fiction, romance, (some)chick lit, crime/suspense/thriller and I love biographies and memoirs. Some of my favorite authors are Maeve Binchy, Judy Blume, L.M. Montgomery, Michael Ondaatje, Farley Mowat, Margaret Atwood and Nora Roberts.

message 1339: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Sheila, You have rather eclectic taste too. I LOVE Farley Mowat, especially his book Never Cry Wolf. You'll find at least a couple people in this group who enjoy all the genres/authors you mention. I hope because of this group you find ideas for many new comfort reads.

message 1340: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (schmoozy) | 5 comments Thank you Lisa. Never Cry Wolf is one my favorites, and needs to be cycled into my re-read list asap.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Sheila wrote: "Thank you Lisa. Never Cry Wolf is one my favorites, and needs to be cycled into my re-read list asap."

It's one I've read frequently, though only once since I joined Goodreads 4 1/2 years ago.

message 1342: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 112 comments Welcome, Sheila! For crime/suspense, one of my favorite reads is Heartsick by Chelsea Cain. There are three books in the intial series, this being the first. I'm not sure I'd mark it as "comforting" since it deals with a female seriel killer, but it is complety engrossing! :o) I look forward to sharing other reads with you!

message 1343: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (schmoozy) | 5 comments Thank you Krista. I checked out Heartsick, and it is added to my wishlist. Looks really, really good. : )

message 1344: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 112 comments You're most welcome, Sheila. I've turned most of my friends and local bookstore peeps onto it. I loved the first one and greatly enjoyed the second and third. There is another book out by Chelsea Cain which continues with other characters and, I guess, could be considered the next in the series, but several of my faithful "bookies" said it's nowhere near as good as the first three so I've opted to skip it for the time being. Can't wait for you to read Heartsick and hear what you think of it!

Another suspense (not sure if she's classified as suspense or mystery) author I enjoy is Karen Robards.

If you're up for some contemporary Christian serial killer reads, check out Abomination by Colleen Coble (loved it) or The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker. And one of my favorite non-serialist Dekker books is Thr3e. I sped through each of these reads at lightening speed just to find out the end. :o)

Melissia Bruehl (melissiabruehl) Hi! My name is Melissia and I live in Florida. I travel a lot for work so spend time reading books in airports...and listening to books on CDs in the car as I drive around. I have always loved to read but this site has re-energized me. I don't have a lot of reader friends so I am looking forward to having the added excitement of discussing the books I'm reading with others!

I, also, just finished The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer , loved it but it was far from comforting. For that I always turn to Jane Austen, especially Pride and Prejudice

message 1350: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Mary. Glad you've found us! Welcome to the group. I'll be reading The Invisible Bridge with my real world book club as our March selection. We're also reading a Jane Austen book next year but not P & P: Persuasion.
