Post them here if you have questions or if you're unsure about a book or a task.

Thanks!

Umm... I'm thinking something along the lines of A Tale of Two Cities, The Three Musketeers, that sort of thing.

Something that could be considered a classic (I'll accept something written up until about 50 years ago) but is still HF.

Sure thing. :)

I forgot for a second that this one isn't for everyone the easiest to find!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I have a question, would you consider The Chronicles of Narnia series to be HF since the world the children come from take place during WWII? If I could use it, I can use some of the books for this challenge.

message 8: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Umm... I wouldn't consider them to be HF because they were written around the time that they are set in.

However, I'd be OK with using The Magician's Nephew, because that one does contain the making of the world in the books. It would have to be either the YA or Alternative History or Fantasy task though.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I thought we were basing them off when it took place in the book.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments Could I use two of those books for one YA task, one alternative history task?

Jayme wrote: "I thought we were basing them off when it took place in the book."

Historical fiction is a book that is written about a past time. As the Narnia books were set in the time that they were written, they wouldn't technically be considered historical, except for the one I mentioned, and that's kind of stretching it.

There are some classic books which are hard to tell when they are supposed to take place, like Anne of Green Gables, etc, because a year isn't given, so if there is a doubt, I'll generally allow it, but if it's clear that they were contemporary books when they were written, they don't count. Sorry.

And each book can only be used for one task.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments For the alternative history/fantasy task would a fantasy based around a historical person be okay? I have "Ravens of Avalon" which has the historical figure Boudica and I have Mercedes Lackey's "Gwenhwyfar" which is based off Queen Gwenievere of Camelot.

message 14: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Either would be fine. :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments They talk about Celts and Druids in the Ravens of Avalon could I use that book for the HF about celts/Druids or does it have to be a strictly HF?

message 16: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
I'll allow the Ravens book for the druid task if that's what you want to use it for. It's more like fantasy/ alt history, but it's close enough. :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments yeah and then i can do Gwenhwyfar for the alt/fantasy history. Hopefully I can get these in while doing the Seasonal Reading Challenge

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments For anyone still in need of books you can try the Complete Idiot's Guide- Historical thread:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...

There are some pretty good books listed by category.

Umm... Hmm. Uhhh... ?

Sorry Jon. I haven't read that one, and I'm pretty sure this square contemporary peg is not gonna go into this round HF hole. =\

message 22: by Jon (new)

Jon | 303 comments yeah thought so thanks for nuthin captian... hahhaha, its ok.. itll keep.. poor little booky left all alone for another few months.. there there..strokes and puts back.

message 23: by ToniS (new)

ToniS Hello. I'm new. I like the Challenge idea because I think it will help me organize my somewhat chaotic reading habits. But tell me how it works. Do I need to commit to what's going to be read for each category or can I decide what fits what as I go? In other words, do I need to post a list? And do I tell you when I finish something? Do I have to go any order? Like, do I have to do all the 5-pointers first or anything? Anything else I need to know?

message 24: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Nope, it's all up to you Toni! You can decide to choose everything up front, or you can read and then see where it fits, and you can even change stuff later if you want.

You don't have to report points as you go, as long as they are all reported by 11:59p April 30 and I can verify they've been read.

You don't need to go in order or anything like that. It's all up to you.

Do you understand how the scoring works?

message 25: by ToniS (new)

ToniS Yep, I got the scoring part. Just wasn't sure if I needed to declare. Some of those categories I'm going to have to research, so I might just focus on the easy ones first.

Do you think "The Grapes of Wrath" counts as HF? Written in 1939, so it's not like it was written way after the period it's about, but maybe it counts.

Jeane (icegini) Jon wrote: "yeah thought so thanks for nuthin captian... hahhaha, its ok.. itll keep.. poor little booky left all alone for another few months.. there there..strokes and puts back."

noooo, read it now!!!!!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Becky - Would A Town Like Alice count as historical fiction. It was written in 1950 about WWII, so I am thinking not, but wanted to check.

message 28: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Umm... no, I couldn't count that one as HF - BUT, we now have all of our bonus tasks, and 30.1 is a freebie, so you can read any genre you want. :)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) That's okay - I came up with another book for the task I was going to use this one for. I have already finished my first book of the challenge, but don't even have my list finished yet. lol. I hope to get it finished and posted by tomorrow.

message 32: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) No excuses anymore koala bear!!!!

message 33: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments For the amount of pages...are we putting the exact number of pages we read or are we using GR versions? Just asking because I noticed that my copy of TB has less pages than what GR lists for the hardback.

message 34: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
I've been going by GR if the person *cough*Heather*cough* doesn't list their own page count. LOL

But, if your edition is the same as the one on GR, I can change the page count to match. I AM ALL POWERFUL!

Mew.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I've noticed that, too, Jackie. Fortunately for me, the difference usually doesn't change the bonus point category that it is in. On the rare occasion that it does, I have been using the actual pages I read.

But I wonder - why are some of the right on the money, and some have a discrepancy between the actual book and GR. Even though I go a long way to try to find the one with the correct ISBN number.

message 36: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Ugh! It makes librarians crazy! LOL A lot of the information is here is directly pulled from Amazon, which is notoriously wrong.

Also, if I remember correctly, the page count includes any indices or bibliographies etc, so that sometimes inflates the number too.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) So - oh wise one, which number should we use? The GR number or the actual pages of our physical book, or is it just up to each person?

message 38: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Use the larger of the two. *shrug* I'm good either way. A couple of pages generally isn't going to make a huge difference to the score.

message 39: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Unless you want GR changed to reflect the actual pages, which is easy too.

Just be sure that it's the correct edition and that the page count doesn't include a preview chapter of book 2 or anything. :)

message 40: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Becky wrote: "Use the larger of the two. *shrug* I'm good either way. A couple of pages generally isn't going to make a huge difference to the score. "

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I forgot *bows and scrapes* Please forgive me for the lapse.

That's ok, you're both forgiven.

...This time.

;) LOL

message 47: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
LOL That's OK Heather, I was just poking fun. You linked to the book, so it's not like it was a hassle to get a page count! :D

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments page counts are important????

message 49: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
In the challenge, only for bonus points.

But some people, like me, are kind of OCD about making sure that their book page counts are right in general. I keep track of the number of pages I read, so I want the information on GR to be right.

So far this year I've read 2182 pages. :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments My book pages never match up.
