message 303: by Jon (new)

Jon | 303 comments did you like it?

message 304: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) uhm, the first pages made me realize that it wasn't because of my very young age that I thought the movie was hard to watch, but that it was the story. A big part I liked but before coming to the end I thought it went a bit on and on and getting boring. The last part, I mean very last part of te story I liekd again more, also ow it was written.
So in the end it is in between.

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Oh yeah, that scoreboard looks a lot better :D

It's funny how many names with J are on it.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments yeah like 6, this is the J group.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments hey Becky, I have a question, I am reading a book that takes place in Isanbul between 1950-1970. It's historical but not fictional. It's a nonfiction. Can I still use it for the 5 point modern historical book?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments Well I figure i would go for it anyways. I completed task 10.1 Modern history. I read "Istanbul" by Orhan Pamuk. Plus I am claiming 4 bonus points for a 368 page book.

Total Points: 119

message 316: by ToniS (new)

ToniS Becky, what qualifies as a "classic" HF for 20.1? Does it have to be written before a certain year or does it have to be something everyone has heard of? Is I Capture the Castle a classic?

i think has to be HF unless otherwise specified

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Sorry Jayme, I do have to sleep sometime! LOL
Jon is right, it would have to be fictional. For the ones that say "book" instead of "HF" I'll allow NF, because it doesn't specify, but this one does say HF.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Toni, as far as classics go, I'm pretty open on that score as well. Something everyone has heard of is pretty broad, because everyone's heard of Twilight, but I wouldn't call it a classic. :P

But let's say, for definition purposes, that a classic for the challenge would be something written before 1950.

I don't know if ICTC would count, not because it's not a classic (I think it is) but because I am pretty sure that it was contemporary when it was written.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments well it was worth a shot.

Holly P (hlp0221) | 137 comments I liked Pope Joan. I just had someone ask me if it was too historical fiction meets chick lit for a guy to like it. It has a little romance going on but the unlikely story of how she became a priest and then rose all the way to be the Pope was far more interesting.

Holly P (hlp0221) | 137 comments There is a new movie. It was released in Europe in October but hasn't been released in the US yet. The author made a comment on my blog about my review this morning and she gave me this link which has stills from the movie. http://www.aceshowbiz.com/movie/pope_...

It looks awesome from the pics. I hope it gets released here soon.

Oh yeah. I haven't seen the movie in ages, but when Sayuri and the Chairman are walking through the cherry blossoms, it's sooooo stunning and beautiful on screen. I want to line my hallway with cherry trees so that I can walk through them every day! LOL

I'm happy that you loved this book, H. I had a feeling you would! :D

I don't remember the casting much, aside from Sayuri (which I think is a beautiful name...) being Chinese instead of Japanese. Not that it matters much. It's still a wonderful movie.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I didn't think it mattered much that the actress was chinese instead of Japanese but it POed some people off and was thought not authentic.
