"Not really. One more question. What happens if this doesn't work?" Christian asked. "What if she dies?"

"Then I'll take care of it," Alek said. "Just like last time," he added in a whisper.
"You don't want to know," Alek said.
"Since we're risking her life, I kind of do." Christian insisted
"I promise you, you don't," Alek insisted.
"I won't help you if you don't tell me everything." Christian said. "I'm not gong into this lightly."
"Fine," Alek said. "Where does your sister keep her fathers spell book?"
Christian shrugged. "Can't help you there. Unless you tell me what you want with it and I might have an idea."
"I'm going to show you what you want to know," Alek said. "It's very hard to explain.
"ok" Christian said, "She probably has it hidden, and if it's hidden it's in a shadow, and if it's in a shadow, I should be able to find it." Christian closed his eyes and reached out to the shadows of the house, most if which had become familiar to him over time. One was unusually heavy. "Its in a corner of the bottom shelf of the biggest bookshelf in her room, cloaked by a spell." he said once he'd opened his eyes.
Alek was gone and back again in under two seconds, holding Masons spell book. He flipped through the pages to find the spell he had used the first time Sabrina died, then handed the book to him.
"What makes you think this'll actually work?" Christian asked skeptically. "It seems a bit far fetched"
"And what we're the results? " Christian asked skeptically.
"I know that" Christian said, Not seeing how the two were related. "We're trying to keep her that way."
"She died when Adrian stabbed her," Alek said. "But now she's not dead."
"When did that happen?" Christian asked.
"The same day she was became a vampire," Alek said.
"Then I guess it works." Christian said. "Now what?"
"We get Susannah on board I guess," Alek said.
"And how is she supposed to help?" Christian asked.
"Keep Sabrina's fire from going out," Alek said.
"The fire Susannah has and the fire Sabrina has are very different." Christian warned. "It might not work"
"Then we have to figure out a more sure way to keep her fire burning," Alek said.
"if we had another soulfire laying around, we might...." ChristiAn trailed off. "Who are those siblings that have been giving you guys a hard time again?" he asked.
"Adrian and Balthazar?" Alek asked.
"Yeah, them. What do they do again?" Christian asked.
"They're shifters and they keep trying to kill people," Alek said.
"What kind of shifters?" Christian asked.
"The kind that feed on firestarter blood?" Alek half said half asked.
"There's this legend..." Christian started, then shook his head. "No, never mind."
"It's so far fetched. When I read about it, even I didn't believe it and I believe almost anything." Christian warned.
"This is Forks," Alek pointed out.
"Alright." Christian said. "Its said that once there was an entire town of firestarters. Firestarters, Soulfires, and even Firedancers which are extinct. anyway, it's said that they were so close to their magic, that firestarter magic originated from this town, that the town and the magic were one, and that in this town, whenever a soulfire brought the dead back to life, the backlash wasn't their life- instead, their powers morphed, cursing them and the other firestarters in their family of the same generation to be shapeshifters, their true face wiped from their mind so that they didn't know what they looked like anymore and they could be anyone, the loss of identity and being cast out from the village taking all the hope from them. Negative feelings in firestarters, even firestarters that are no longer strictly firestarters, holding fast and always dangerous, but in these firestarters, their hopelessness usually ended up taking their humanity from them until they were just bitter, evil, faceless immortals cursed to roam forever, only able to sustain themselves by the blood of their race. Without it they disappear, no hope for an afterlife, and with th e lack of identity, most find ceasing to exist too horrible a fate." Christian said. "It was the stupidest thing I'd ever read, something from a bad fantasy novel, but if we're grasping at straws here..." he trailed off with a shrug.
"That is quite a grasp," Alek agreed.
"I didn't find this story from the most credible source." Christian added. "An old firestarter children's story book."
Alek barely stifled a laugh. "Any chance there's any truth to all that?"
"I honestly believe that if we look into the shifters past we may find a helpful connection to firestarters. They feed on their blood. Vampires feed on human blood and they were once human, right? I think pieces of the story are worth looking in to." Christian admitted.
"Where do you want to start?" Alek asked.
Christian thought for a second. "Are you able to subdue either? so we can question one." he asked.
"I have Balthazar unconscious now," Alek said.
"Then let's go find him." Christian said.
"Try to keep up." Was Alek's reply as he vanished down the block.
Christian closed his eyes, took a deep breath and focused. then he stepped back into his own shadow and traced Alek through his.
Alek was waiting just down the block.
