"Neither do I," Jacob said. "But the fact is my living has put you back in danger."

"I'm always in danger. The thing about mortality is that anything can kill or harm you at any time. There's no use worrying so much about it." Susannah said.
"But you'd have been completely out of danger from Adrian had I died," Jacob said.
"and what good would that have been?" Susannah said. "I'd rather spend ten minutes with you in the middle of a war zone that ten years in a safe oasis without you, Jacob."
"We didn't have ten minutes," Jacob said. "You might not have had ten minutes as far as I knew."
"my point is, don't do it again." Susannah said.
"I can't promise that," Jacob said.
"I will always choose your life above all else," Jacob said.
"not above your own life." Susannah said.
"Especially above my own," Jacob said.
Jacob took her hand. "So long as your safe I will do whatever it takes," he said.
"What good is being safe if you're completely miserable? " Susannah asked.
"I thought you'd be sad for a while, but as the years went by you'd get better. Then one day you would meet someone who made you laugh, that made you happy, and then you'd slowly start to like him, the way you slowly warmed up to me. And then you would be happy," Jacob said. "That's what I would want for you."
"Promise me," Jacob said. "If something like this happens again, promise me that you will move on."
"I can't promise you that." Susannah said.
"We'll talk about this more later," Jacob said, hearing Carlisle down the hall.
"Could you go to the cafeteria and get me something to drink?" Jacob asked as Carlisle came in.
Susannah nodded And went down to the cafeteria.
"Carlisle I need to talk to you about something before Susannah comes back," Jacob said once she was gone.
Susannah got down to the cafeteria and got Jacob a drink.
Jacob told Carlisle about the issues with the morphine and discussed a possible way of dealing with it.
Susannah walked down the hall with the drink.
"Susannah won't like it," Carlisle said. "I know but it won't be forever," Jacob replied.
"here you go." Susannah said, coming back into the room with a drink in her hand.
"Thank you," Jacob said taking the drink. "Carlisle, I'll let you know after I talk to Susannah."Carlisle nodded and left.
"talk to me about what?" Susannah asked.
"I lied when I said that I was fine," Jacob said.
"The pain medication, I burn it off before it does anything," Jacob told her.
"Why didn't you say something sooner?" Susannah asked, confused.
"I didn't want to worry you," Jacob said. "And I didn't think there was anything that could be done about it."
"So then what did you find out could be done about it?" Susannah asked.
"I can go into a chemically induced coma," Jacob said.
Jacob nodded. "They give me some injection and I fall asleep and then in a few weeks when the wounds are better i get another one that wakes me up."
Jacob looked surprised. "I was expecting you to be much more upset and to fight it more," he said.
"Why would I fight something that's going to save you pain?" Susannah asked, looking at him sideways. "I just want to know that you're alright."
"Thank you baby," Jacob said reaching up to take her hand. "I'll see you an a week or two."
"I'll miss you," Susannah said, running her free hand through his hair.
"I'll miss you too," Jacob said. He slid over some more so her was nearly on the edge of the bed. "Here, come lie next to me for a while. I'll have them do it after you leave to go back to your aunts."
Susannah laid next to him. "Jacob, if you're hurting, why prolong it?" she asked.
"To spend time with you," Jacob said, pulling her close so her head rested on his good shoulder.
Susannah sighed, but closed her eyes and breathed him in, knowing she'd miss him over the next couple of weeks.
