Tanja, I just thought of one possible conflict. Is your new year's resolution anything to do with weight or looks? Because beauty definitely relates to that. If not, though, I think you're in good shape.

message 103: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments I was thinking about Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd, but that was published in 2009, so it's out, huh? Hmmmmm... I think the first half of Bonnie's task is going to be the hardest for me. I guess I'll read this book for 25.1a....

message 104: by Sara ♥ (last edited Nov 24, 2009 07:36PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments All right. I think I've got one: Leaves From My Journal by Wilford Woodruff.
Leaves From My Journal by Wilford Woodruff

* Published 1882 (BEFORE he died)
* He's a rabbit, I'm a pig
* I haven't read an ENTIRE book of his, but I've read a lot of his teachings (he was the president of my Church from 1889-1898)
* It's definitely NOT on anyone's list
* It's nonfiction, and totally random, so it REALLY doesn't fit these tasks
* It may SORT OF overlap 25.8b about pioneers from 1800-1880, but it would just be a few journal entries, not the focus of the book. The book is just stories of his life and what you can learn from them.

So I think that will work. I feel good about it... unless anyone sees any red flags?

EDIT: I just flipped out because if I finish the Fall Challenge, that book conflicts with the task I had in mind... but the I realized that the cover of my copy is BROWN, which makes it fine...

EDIT 2: Oyyyyeeee... My task is going to make this one SOOOOO much harder!!!

Buddenbrooks has a brown and moss green cover with a yellow spine......will that mess *me* up????.....do I have to put out a Literary Banana peel for you, Sara?????? LOL!

message 106: by Sara ♥ (last edited Nov 24, 2009 07:50PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments No, you're good. Beware of nearly-solid-colored covers of Scarlet (Red), Peacock (Blue), Mustard (Yellow), Green, Plum (Purple), or White... (Clue, anyone?)

Doesn't that make you want to shoot me? It makes me want to shoot myself!! (And that's just a third of the task... there's still weapons and rooms...)

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) | 1218 comments Without doing too much research, it seems like starting with a male author and selecting a thriller or action book may produce some results. How about some early Ken Follett novels like Key To Rebecca, The Pillars of the Earth, or Night Over Water. Beach Music might work if Rome or South Carolina is not your dream vacation. Also Leon Uris wrote a books dealing with the Holocaust - Mila 18 and one about Ireland - Trinity, neither of which I believe were made into a movie. (Although many of these could be people's 5-star reads but it might be a starting place).

message 115: by Night (new)

Night | 57 comments Still digging out old books. Coming up with more prospects. Feel free to point out what I miss!
(Gee, I am beginning to love this task XD )

The Other Daughter by Lisa Gardner
I think this is a stand-alone mystery fiction, not qualified as 'Cozy' eh?
First published in 1999. Story took place in US.
American writer born on different Zodiac from me. Never made into a movie, as far as IMDB is concerned.

I also wonder if Dancing Shoes and Theater Shoes by Noel Streatfeild considered as a series? I love Ballet Shoes but never read these two. If they fit this task, it would be great.

Last one is The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster. Another book I'd love to read--that is, if I can find where it is in my house. *sigh*
There's a NY Trilogy movie on IMDB, but I don't think it's from this novel.
(Anyway, have to check again if it's 5* on any winners' lists or not.)

message 116: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (thebookhangover) | 46 comments Does the edition matter? I just wanted to double check because I wanted to read Songs of the Humpback Whale A Novel in Five Voices which came out in 1992, yet the edition I have is from 2003. It probably doesn't matter, but I just wanted to double-check. ...Unless someone comes up with another reason why it wouldn't work...

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Don't bother with Trinity, it is someone's five star read.
I have a book that I started for the Fall Challenge, but didn't finish - would that count??? Otherwise it fits.
Monkey:Folk Novel of China, translated by Arthur Waley (that's not the proper cover)
Read, white and black cover, written in China the 1500s, don't know the author's birthdate, but the translator is not a Year of the Dog. Not a cozy mystery or a fantasy. So what did I miss??

The series task has to be a female author with a female main character. Noel Streatfeild is apparently a WOMAN (shock on my part!), so those books WOULD qualify for the female-series task... so no good here...

Tammy, I think Mila 18 won't work because of the number (Theresa's task).

Kiki, you got me all excited with The Stranger because it's on my TBR list. But then I realized I can't use it because I haven't read Camus before. :-(

The V.C. Andrews books would fit 15.3 (Read A Novel Written By A Female Author From A Series That Has A Female Main Character). Ooh, unless any of those were ghost-written by a man! (Would that count, since it's still published under her name? Hmmm...)

I don't know how much of a role the LDS church played in Western expansion, so that's up to you. If you believe it fits, then I'm all for it.

Only other thing that came to mind: will your new years resolution have anything to do with faith? If not, you're all set. I think. ;)

Edition doesn't matter, just the original date of publication. BUT all of the editions listed on GR have 2001 as the original publication date... so you might need to double-check that.

It's a series of a sort, but it doesn't have a consistent female lead. I think they still count. Am I totally wrong? Uh oh. I better do some research and check back in.

UPDATE: They don't count as an official series (they're more like individual books with similar titles), according to Cynthia's ruling. You can definitely use them for this task!

I think Stephen King won a Hugo or a Nebula prior to 200, so you can't use any of his if they count as sci-fi. If they're solidly in horror, though, you should be okay. (I can't read his books; I'm a wimp. I'll have to trust you guys to know which category fits.) :)

Hey Tanja, if you're still able to help, I've worked on my list some but could use another set of eyes on it. Here's what I have it narrowed down to. I've read all of these authors. My Chinese Zodiac sign is Year of the Rat.

Roddy Doyle -- The Commitments – or some other title by him….
Louise Erdrich – The Birchbark House
Elizabeth George – (if TV movies don’t count as ‘movies’)
Anne Tyler – A Patchwork Planet (publ 1998, no movie -- BUT, fits Aliteration task) & Clock Winder (publ 1996)
Margaret Atwood (Canadian author -- disallowed)
Elizabeth Berg – What We Keep (publ 1998) (Aliteration task)
Sandra Dallas – Buster Midnight’s Café (Red, white and blue cover)
Ivan Doig – English Creek or Heart Earth
Georgette Heyer – (but not 5 star title from Donna Jo’s Read List)(Not set on an island, including Great Britain)
Lynn Kurland - (Probably not since a lot of her books are fanasty and feature a female protaganist)
Anne Lamott – Bird by Bird (Aliteration task), or Traveling Mercies
Robert Morgan – The Truest Pleasure (publ 1995)
Annie Proulx – Postcards (publ 1982)(Make sure the copy read doesn't have the red white and blue cover.) (Disallowed bcse of one-word title)
Anne Patchett – The Magician’s Assistant
Marilynne Robinson – Housekeeping (Movie Release 1987) (Disallowed because of one-word title)
