Never be embarassed to read what you like Mary...my repertoire of reading materials consists of mostly PNR or Urban Fantasy. Sometimes they aren't the most intelligent books available but they're fun to read and give my mind the escape it needs.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i am reading The Unwritten Rules Of Baseball only as a filler until the inter-library loan deal comes through with my next Conn Iggulden book in the Emperor series AND my friend gives me the last book in the series that i have been waiting to finish (The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest). i have loved the first two books in this series.

I agree Sally! I loved this book until about 2/3 through then it just fell apart for me. Martin was the most interesting character IMO.

I liked Martin. I felt for him. I also really liked Marjike. I kind of want to go to Amsterdam now. I keep reading about Amsterdam and London. It seems.

smetchie | 4034 comments I have to read this book for bookclub: The Merlot Murders
Feel bad for me.

Actually, it could be fine. Who knows? It's just such a godawful name! The description says it's filled with fascinating detail about the science and alchemy of wine making. That sounds alright I guess.

Pat (patb37) I am currently reading Boneshaker, and just checked The Final Solution: A Story of Detection out of the library.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments DANGIT! i just went to the library and got a book that i have already read. shoot. thought the liner notes sounded familiar...

message 159: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart I'm also read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 'cause I want to see what's all the fuss about. The first chapter was unbearable, but now that Lisbeth has showed up, it's getting interesting.

They're going to film an American version, and Ellen Page is trying for the part of Lisbeth. I would like to see Jeremy Irons as Armansky.

Mmm, Jeremy Irons. I would like to see him get it on with someone. But I don't think Armansky has any romance in the book.

Totally. That would be hott.

Brittomart Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Blomkvist?

Brittomart Haha I'm just on page like, 40-something, so maybe I don't know enough about the character?

Maybe I just can't separate PSH from Truman Capote in my mind.

PSH is not good looking enough, I don't think; Clive Owen is too good looking. I think a middle ground needs to be struck. Someone who looks a little like Liam Neeson, but 10-15 years younger.

message 169: by Brittomart (last edited Jul 24, 2010 09:23PM) (new)

Brittomart Blomkvist is good looking? I pictured him as middle-aged, fat, and bald.

Not saying that middle-aged, fat, and bald dudes can't be good-looking, but I pictured Blomkvist as you know...the bad kind.

message 170: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Hmm, well, it has been awhile since I've read a physical description of him. (Is there even one in the book??) I actually think this is about right:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_...

Daniel Craig is way too good looking to be Blomkvist.

message 171: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart Well, the book says he has lots of love affairs, so I guess that means he's attractive. I just don't see him that way though.

Ethan Hawke?

message 172: by Brittomart (last edited Jul 24, 2010 10:00PM) (new)

Brittomart Stop!

Viggo Mortenson as Blomkvist.
Donald Sutherland as Vanger 'cause he's never been young.

message 173: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Ooohhh, I could stand to see Viggo do it. Sutherland I'm not a fan of. His voice grates.

message 174: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart Maybe I will meet him today! I'm itching to see what happened to Harriet.

message 175: by [deleted user] (new)

Am I the only one who hasn't read it yet?

message 176: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) Viggo, yes. I just watched the movie a few days ago so I have those images burned into my mind right now and need to think about my casting...Also watched that movie with Ellen Page and I can just see her as Lisbeth if they toughened her up a bit.

I'll have to speed it up my to-read list so I can find out what everyone is talking about. :)

message 181: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments I've checked it out and had to return it unread a couple times. The last time I reserved the LP edition thinking nobody would want it and I could keep it longer. No such luck.

message 182: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I wonder what the hoopla is all about re: Larsson's
Millenium trilogy. I've read the first two and might read the third if someopne, you know, gives me a copy, but really, they aren't that good. Is it because Larsson is Swedish, and dead? Just curious.

message 183: by Flora (last edited Jul 25, 2010 06:12PM) (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I've read the 1st one and liked it after I got passed the first chapter. I've checked the 2nd one out yestarday at the library but I haven't started it yet. Right now I'm working on 1984 as well as The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and really enjoying both of these

message 185: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart I'm not a big fan of the writing, but is that because it's a translation? I love the story though, and I actually want to know what's going to happen next.

message 186: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart At one point, Erika calls Blomkvist her "toy boy," and I'm like, "Does he mean boy toy?"

message 187: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I doubt it's just a translation issue; I think Larsson's style is simply quite dry. He was a journalist and you can definitely tell.

message 188: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments the lisbeth character makes it for me

message 189: by [deleted user] (new)

'toy boy' is a common enough expression. I don't think it is an error at all.

message 190: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart I have a friend who refers to a certain sex position as the "reverse cowboy," and I'm always laughing too much inside to correct him.

I've read the first two and I agree they're not great writing, but they're good enough writing. They're pageturners. I don't think they're necessarily more popular because he's dead. I just think Swedish crime is super hot right now, the way vampires are, and people gravitate toward hot. Why is Swedish crime hot? I have no idea...I read a lot of Swedish crime novels but I like crime/mystery/thrillers in general.

I think the covers draw a lot of readers in too (the yellow and green one, the red one with blond hair strands (which looks like pasta strands to me), and the silver one with hornets). Good covers can really grab a casual reader.

Brittomart Barb wrote: "As for Philip Seymour Hoffman, he'd be perfect for Advocat whats-his-name ... I won't say much because Britt hasn't met him yet"

I've met him, and those scenes between him and Lisbeth make me think that Ellen Page would be perfect for the role because that's exactly what she did in Hard Candy. Except for an entire movie.

message 197: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments so i am reading the conn iggulden Emperor series and i finished the first book (of four) and then did an inter-library loan request for the next three. friday i got notice that a book came in for me. i went to get it and it was number four in the series. murphy has struck again
