Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Mom's reading the new Kingsolver right now. I was planning to get it for her for Christmas, but Kingsolver came to one of Mom's bookstores and did a reading and a signing, so what can you do?

message 52: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's out of your hands, Jackie. How's the snow, by the way?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The snow got all washed away by rain last night, Larry. It's back to normal, now. 40s and kinda rainy.

Félix (habitseven) *envies Jackie for the warmth*

It's about 10 here.

Clark, was that book worth reading? I'm curious enough to read it.

Gus wrote: "Clark, was that book worth reading? I'm curious enough to read it."

Gus, just got it from the library last night and haven't started it yet. It's cowritten by Legs McNeil. I say that's a good thing.

I'll let you know.

Youndyc | 1255 comments I want to know what the pervy unicorn book is that keeps getting mentioned.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Clark, you should check out Please Kill Me if you haven't already...you probably have. I didn't read McNeil's porn one, though....always meant to read it...

I have a copy on hold on the library wait list...

message 61: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I've heard of this book - Rampant - but I didn't realize that the unicorns were pervy. Just violent. It's getting mixed reviews - Jackie, have you read it already and liked it?

Bun, what did you think of the Master and the Margarita?

message 64: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments RA, thanks for the link. Amusing...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The unicorns aren't pervy, you pervs.

message 66: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (bitsyblingbooks) I just finished the Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore -- Ok, but not a huge fan. Now I'm onto The Dark Lantern. It is surprisingly good. Always looking for recommendations.

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

Christopher Moore is hit or miss, although I absolutely loved Lamb.

Cool. Will you write a review after you're done? It sounds fascinating, but I'm still not sold on reading it.

I've only read "Practical Demon Keeping." It was ok but there was one character I liked, the demon Catch. My good friend who loves Moore says he's in Lamb, I think. I just recently picked up "A Dirty Job." I think I'm going to like that one.

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments I changed the title of this thread since we're now onto what we're currently reading and we can keep it going...hopefully?

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm currently reading Good Omens and it is the worst Gaiman I have read to date. Good enough to finish, it just seems to jump around willy nilly.

Already there, RA. I think I have certain sections of "Please Kill Me" memorized.

It's at once depressing and hilarious.

message 75: by Angie (new)

Angie (angabel) Currently I'm reading The Inscrutable Americans by Anurag Mathur. It's taking me longer than I would have liked, mostly because I keep going on long laughing spells. It's about an Indian guy from a small village going to an American university; this kid hasn't seen a washer/dryer, American football, and his grandmother keeps asking him if he's found a (vegetarian) restaurant with a Brahmin cook.

There's one thing that I can't quite figure out, that the character can't figure out either. I suspect it will come, eventually. It's great reading about the American characters, because they feel both overdone and completely true at the same time. I think my slight disconnect is from the fact that the book takes place in the 1980s. Maybe the 70s, actually? It mentions a pet rock...

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I just finished the new Klosterman and I'm on to Ballard's The Crystal World. I'm two reviews behind...gotta catch up.

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments I just finished "A Christmas Carol" and I think I'm moving on to Mockingbird by Sean Stewart. I'm being indecisive as usual.

I just finished Daughter of Fortune. It's going to be hard to find something that engrossing to follow it up with. I'm back to Sookie Stackhouse for the now.

message 80: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I'm reading Restoration. It's quite funny--I don't remember the movie being very amusing.

message 81: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, I just finished both Greene's The End of the Affair and Fante's 86'd. I picked up the book on Ace of Cakes today at the library, but that's more of a page through...not sure what I'll read next...

Youndyc | 1255 comments I'm reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman.

Is that Terry Pratchett, Gretchen? I've never tried him. Something tells me he wouldn't float my boat.

message 85: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments It is. I like his writing. It's funny. I just can't get into the story for whatever reason. It might be one of those you have to read a whole chunk of at once. I've just been reading it before bed and by the next night I've forgotten who all the characters are.

message 86: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I read Sookie Stackhouse at night for that reason. Charlaine Harris repeats the main plot details and explains who characters are every third page, so I'm never confused. If I read her during the day, however, I get annoyed.

*snort*

Book five? Ten? Are they sequential? Or is he just prolific? Do these books feature the same protagonist, or what?

Mandy (mandypants) Second the Night Watch recommendation. I've just started reading Pratchett this year and that was the first book I read. I think it was a good introduction.

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments I've been slowly reading the Discworld books in order for several years now. I had a real hard time with The Color of Magic but I finished it and thought I wouldn't go any further. Then one day about six months later, on my way home from work, I got this thought in my head that I had to read the next one, The Light Fantastic, like someone came up from behind and hit me in the head with an iron skillet. That's as close to a sequel he's ever done in the Discworld that I know of, not counting the Tiffany Aching books. I still had a hard time with it but when I was finished I felt like if you see the two books as one story it's great.
For me, the series doesn't make me laugh out loud but I chuckle and giggle a lot. I agree that the first six aren't great but you get to meet two of the best characters in the first two: the Luggage and the Librarian. And I'm not saying any more about those two!
The Discworld books are also my go-to books when I'm reading a horror novel and I need something comforting to read in bed.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I love Mort and The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, and I agree that The Color of Magic is NOT the best Pratchett out there.

message 94: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) Is there a Discworld book that has Vetinari as the protagonist?

message 95: by Jackie "the Librarian" (last edited Feb 08, 2010 02:11PM) (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Night Watch has quite a bit of Vetinari's history, Mandy.

message 96: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) Thanks, Jackie. Yeah, I was just wondering if there was one that was all about him. Sigh. I think he would make a wonderfully complex protagonist.

Thanks, kevin! I was trying to display the flurry of excitement that almost wiggled my grossly bloated human-producing body right out of its office chair.

I've already recalled it from the CSU library user who has it until next Monday.
