Guy Pettengell | 7 comments Hi,

My name is Guy Pettengell and I have written two books so far. The first is called Dominant Species (the rise of the vampires). A vampire story with a difference:

The year is 2033 and following a nuclear holocaust New York City is wrapped in the constant darkness of a nuclear winter. But it is a darkness that has unleashed an even greater horror, as rising from the ashes a new hierarchy has formed; a hierarchy of vampires.

Now a battle for freedom rages between Vampire and Man. But there are internal battles that threaten both sides as well. As the vampires struggle against their very nature to create a stable society in which they can rule, the few human survivors living outside the ‘sanctuary’ fight not only for their lives but more importantly for their freedom.

Dominant Species (the rise of the vampires) tells the story of Jake Bradshaw who has to overcome his own relentless feelings of guilt following the death of his parents; a consequence of his escaping from the sanctuary as a child. It is a guilt that has driven a wedge between him and his younger brother, Max. Now Jake must overcome this rift in order to unite and lead the resistance against Karick, the vampire overlord.

My second book is called 'The Gift of the Dark (The Sword of Altimar)' and is the first in a series of fantasy books. It will be available for Kindle very shortly, but in the meantime here's a brief taster:

Chidar was known as the ‘key-maker’, with a natural understanding of the great flows of energy within the universe. Over the years he had earned a reputation that struck fear into the hearts of men, fast becoming one of the world’s greatest sorcerers. That was until he made his biggest mistake and took an apprentice. It was a mistake that would cost his world, and others, a terrible price.

More soon!

Clive Anthony (cliveanthony) | 3 comments Hi, my name is Clive Anthony and I have just added my new fantasy novel Wildmind, details here - wildmind:
Wildmind cover image
An epic fantasy packed with intriguing characters and rich with action.

Everyone knows that people using the ancient magic of the mind will go mad, lose control, and kill themselves along with anyone near them. That’s why they’re called wildminds. That’s why they’re hunted and burned in public.

So how is it that the primitive dog-breeding tribes, the Dogmen, are able to use their wildminds to help them in a highly improbable invasion? Attacking the mighty Empire of Searleddon, they magically control huge wolfhounds, deflect arrows, and even seize control of their enemies’ minds, without going wild.

Two men are pivotal in the defence of the Empire, though they could hardly be more different. Varik Tojen is the heroic soldier with exceptional sword-fighting skills and a troubled personal history. Mal Respler is the timid functionary, cynical about his role directing the persecution of wildminds. One leads from the front while the other trembles in the background. Yet both shape world-changing events, and both have their own worlds turned inside out.

Countess Wayfender and Lae Kinimirra are two women from opposite ends of the social classes, yet they work together in a rebellious cabal. They uncover political and religious intrigues suggesting that the Dogmen have had help from inside the Empire.

While the power games play out, people will die. Dogmen soldiers rampage through the land, led by wildminds with their fierce wolfhounds.

"An interesting and well written adventure story, which reminded me a bit of good old-fashioned adventure stories" (Rising Shadow)
"This irreverent story is full of eccentric chaps, and gleaming with brass." (Warpcore)
"... exuberantly off the wall... a glorious tale of adventure and derring do, as explorers set off to a mythical land simply to prove its existence, but in doing so must take on the laws of time and space, the whole thing gleefully over the top and informed by a pseudo steampunk sensibility." After accidentally harnessing one of these powers it becomes clear that Alex’s fate is intertwined with the destiny of the power forces, and he becomes embroiled in a battle with the vast armies of his dark enemy across the Galaxies, leading to a momentous battle which will define the destiny for all living beings throughout the cosmos. Lea Carter (leacarterwrites) | 32 comments Hi, I'm Lea Carter. I'm an Indie or Self-published author of light fantasy. The first three books of my series, Silver Sagas, follow the story of a young fairy princess (not quite a hundred years old) who finds herself rapidly propelled from being "the youngest" member of the royal family to active involvement in the governing of her tribe.
While this is "light" fantasy (as opposed to dark), these stories will probably be most enjoyed by persons in the 6th grade or older.

Igor Ljubuncic (igorljubuncic) | 8 comments Hi guys and gals,

My name is Igor Ljubuncic. In formal circles, I am a Linux geek, with technical books and professional publications in leading magazines, and a website that draws 1.3 million views each month.

But I also have a gentle side to my soul, or not really, because I write dark, grim fantasy for adults.

I have already published two books in my four-book epic fantasy series, The Lost Words. The names are The Betrayed and The Broken.

The Betrayed by Igor Ljubuncic The Broken by Igor Ljubuncic

Overall, over 65 reviews with the average rating of roughly 4/5, plus a nice cover of The Betrayed by Midwest Book Reviews in August 2012.

Here is the backcover blurb of The Betrayed, and don't ask for The Broken, because it contains spoilers. But I'm sure you will manage:

-----

In the ancient land of the Realms, where armies clash and heroes arise, only the most cunning and courageous can redeem a war torn land from certain annihilation. The Betrayed, Igor Ljubuncic's epic, gritty fantasy novel, spins a searing tale of a world in the throes of war. With furious, fast-paced action and fascinating characters, this wildly inventive saga will thrill anyone who demands fantasy at the top of its game.

A war is brewing in the Realms. When the new religious sect of Feor from Caytor invades the Safe Territories, the home of the old gods, Commander Mali of Eracia scrambles to counter its advance. To that end, Adam, an Eracian prostitute who awaits hanging, is spared to join the army. In the Territories, a former criminal Ayrton and his young protégée Ewan face the threat of the invaders. Can the ruthless followers of Feor be stopped, and the old faith be saved?

As nations clash, old rivalries are set aflame and nothing seems sacred, sinister and ancient secrets are revealed. With wit and adrenalin, The Betrayed weaves a taut and textured landscape of warring factions, foes and allies, to deliver a full-on fantasy tale for the ages.

-----

I have also contributed a story to a world-end anthology. Hugh Howey and Michael J. Sullivan are some of the other authors, too, so it's a great honor for me to be included in the cool gang. You might want to sample this too:

The End - Visions of Apocalypse by N.E. White

Finally, book three is coming out in about 3-4 months, and I am going to write a new, unrelated work soon.

W.J. Lennox | 32 comments Hi everyone, my name's Wendy & am the author of the Crystal Keeper trilogy. I'm a stay at home mum with 2 boys, and started writing seriously in my mid thirties after taking a career break from my profession as an Occupational Therapist working in stroke rehab. It was during this break that I decided to pursue a different path as a writer.

The plot for the trilogy came to me during this time & I felt compelled to put my ideas & vivid imagination into words so began writing the first book, 'The Caves of Tavannar' which gives you a taste of what is to come in the following books.

The first book is set between contemporary Scotland and the fictional World of Galidom. The protagonist in the story is Josie Jenkins, a troubled thirteen year old girl who is struggling to cope with the fallout of her parents' separation and the torment of being bullied at school. The discovery of a family secret draws Josie into the strange, alien world of Galidom, where she finds herself at the centre of a dark conflict.

It is a story of friendship, courage, sacrifice and hope, which will take you on an extraordinary journey, where the entwined strands of time and destiny come full circle in a thrilling and unexpected conclusion.

As an indie author it can be an uphill struggle to get your work noticed so if there is anyone on the group that enjoys this genre, any reviews would be greatly appreciated.

I know people are reluctant to read self published novels, and in particular if there's not another book to follow, but my work has been professional edited and am beavering away on book 2. I can only write part-time so the next book will not be ready until next year, but hope someone might be willing to give it a try.

C.L. Schneider (goodreadscomclschneider) | 6 comments Hello everyone :)

My first published novel, The Crown of stones: Magic-Price is the first book an epic fantasy trilogy. My story follows a man struggling with an innate addiction to magic, born into a world where magic users are reviled, not revered.

The description is below, but if it interests you, please check out my Goodreads reviews. One likened the story to a roller coaster ride. So if you like action with lots of twists and turns, I hope you'll give it a try.

Ian Troy is one of the Shinree, a fallen people with an inherent addiction to magic. Scorned and reviled for the deadly side of their spells, the Shinree are bred as slaves. Their magic is suppressed by drugs and used only as it serves the purposes of the other races. Descended from a long line of soldiers, Ian is conscripted into the Rellan army and made to fight in their longstanding conflict against the ruthless Langorian invaders. The downfall of Rella imminent, Ian goes against orders and turns to the Crown of Stones, an ancient Shinree relic of untold power. Ignorant of its true purpose, Ian uses the crown to end the war, and pays a terrible price.

A decade later, still tortured by the aftermath of that day, Ian lives as a bounty hunter in self-imposed exile. Having renounced his magical heritage, he curbs his obsession with a steady stream of wine and regret. He struggles to put it all behind him, until a fateful encounter with a pretty assassin brings Ian’s past crashing into the present.

Targeted by a rogue Shinree, and a ruthless old enemy, Ian is forced to use magic again. His deadly addiction is rekindled and his life of isolation is brought to a swift end. With the land he gave up everything to protect once more in jeopardy, and his people’s future at stake, Ian becomes embroiled in a violent race for control of the Crown of Stones.

To save the realms and those he cares for, Ian must embrace the one thing he fears most: his own power.

*Please note: The Crown of Stones is not YA.

Andy Peloquin | 45 comments Hello, I'm Andy Peloquin, a fantasy reader who loves to write. Launching soon is my book, In the Days: A Tale of the Forgotten Continent:

The Empire of Atlantis: the most powerful nation in the world. Peace reigns across the continent, and an age of prosperity and enlightenment has made the Empire the center of the globe.
But, beneath the peaceful façade of life in the Imperial City, trouble is brewing. Assassins lurk in the shadows, intrigue abounds in the court of the Empress. Will political ambitions topple the House of Tah, or could the threat be one much more sinister in nature? Dark forces threaten the land, and the future of the Empire is at stake.
One man is shown a glimpse into the future--a future that could be, or the future that is destined to come?
This is the tale of the last days of the great Empire - the Empire that the world forgot. This is the story of Atlantis, in the days when it ceased to be.

message 876: by Mitch (new)

Mitch Rowland | 1 comments Hello, my name is Mitch Rowland. I'm the author of the Sword of Eternity series, which currently has two installments (Eternity's Reach and Eternity's Redemption). These first two books tell the story of Lincoln Maxwell, a legal proofreader (from our world) who is beaten down by modern life. His debt, manipulative ex-girlfriend, and dead-end job make him believe that death is the only way out. But, when he commits suicide, he does not find peace. Instead, he finds Idalore, a mystical world, brought to its knees by a powerful Warlord. Through no fault of his own, Lincoln finds himself in possession of the Sword of Eternity. This enchanted blade is said to be the weapon of heroes, wherein it chooses a 'host' and its magic will thereafter respond to no one else.

Despite his status in the world he left behind, The Sword of Eternity chooses Lincoln as its next hero and this warlord, Corvus, as its target. Lincoln must then decide if he was right to commit suicide, or if there is something more inside him.

The Sword of Eternity series has two primary inspirations. The first is the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I played the game at a young age and it created, in me, a love of the fantasy genre that hasn't diminished since. When I set out to write an epic fantasy novel, I knew that I wanted to capture the essence of the genre I loved so much, as well as create a sword that had as much importance and personality as the Master Sword.

The second inspiration was the Harry Potter series. Unlike the video game, I encountered these books a little after the intended age. I believe I was seventeen when I read the first in the series and I felt somewhat bummed that I had passed the age at which I would have received my Hogwarts letter. Not that I actually expected to get one, but there is something to be said about immersion. So, I set out to create a fantasy world that an adult could travel to through a link in our world. Thus, Idalore was born. The final product falls somewhere between Terry Goodkind and Terry Pratchett. It's the growth of a broken man into something more, with enough humor to remind the reader that he is still from our world.

With that, I want to say thank you to this group, for being a great resource for authors and readers alike. And, I look forward to participating more in the Goodreads community!

Claire Ashgrove (ClaireAshgrove) | 3 comments Good evening, everyone. I'm learning my way around Goodreads, and I wanted to stop in, introduce myself, and mention my forthcoming book, first in a new series.

I'm Claire Ashgrove, sometimes known as Tori St. Claire, and even other times known as Sophia Garrett. We'll stick with "Claire". It's easier :)

By day, I do website maintenance for a small local business and by night I write and operate Finish The Story, an editing house. I've been published and reared in romance, but I'm launching a new Urban Fantasy series that's not necessarily romance on April 21st. I've spent the better part of a year diligently working on this book, and am really excited about the launch. But since it's a newer market for me, and deviates from what I've been doing, I'm also seeking *honest* release day reviews. If anyone is interested, I could part with about 10 ARC copies (Digital). You can reach me via message here or email claire@claireashgrove.com.

Anyway, here's the back cover, and I hope you might take the time to check it out!

Before The Storm
April 21, 2014

Halle Rhoads has a terrifying gift--she can kill with the fury of the storm.

She should have known that kind of power wouldn't go unnoticed. Thrust into a world full of dark magic with a handsome stranger who claims he can teach her, she struggles to master her abilities and stumbles onto a dangerous truth. She's a windwalker, the chosen vessel of the ancient dragons who once ruled the world. Many will stop at nothing to possess the power in her blood, should they discover her secret. With necromancers hunting her and Halle's closest allies guarding secrets, mastering her magic becomes a matter of necessity.

But accepting her destiny is altogether different. For doing so means she must sacrifice everything.

Best,
Claire

Aida Jacobs (theaidajacobs) | 7 comments Hello there :) My name is Aida Jacobs, and I am the author of Dragon Guardian: Fire, which marks the first installment in what is to be my epic swords & sorcery fantasy.

Primordya was once a world of peace where man, dwarf and elf lived in harmony while aligning themselves against their common enemy--the dark elves. But such a balance could not last forever. Having enslaved the dwarves, the dark elves--led by their queen, Nahga--have now turned their ambitious gaze to the surface world. The realm of man was the first to fall, and the realm of the elves hangs on by a mere thread.

Unwillingly thrust into a war that was centuries in the making, Princess Marin Draconya--daughter of Ronar, mortal High King of Primordya, and Niamh, elven Princess of Silvistri--must brave her way through the wilds after her parents and sister are viciously murdered by Nahga. Taken under the wing of the powerful mage, Nicodemus, Marin learns not only to master the raw magic coursing through her veins, but also of her true destiny as a Dragon Guardian--a rare and powerful mage with the ability to command all dragons.

In order to achieve this destiny, Marin must journey to the shrines of the four Elemental Dragons and prove to them that she is indeed worthy of her birthright. Only then will she be able to unite the people of Primordya under a unified banner and defeat Nahga and her massive army

Guy Pettengell | 7 comments Hi there everyone!

I'd really appreciate your thoughts and views...

My new fantasy books: A Gift of the Dark (Parts 1 and 2) are now available in the Kindle bookstore. They are the first two books in a series called Return of the Dark.

However one of the things I've learned quickly as a writer is that you have to develop a whole range of other skills (one being Website design!)and I'd therefore be really interested in any thoughts you might have on my website:

http://www.guypettengell.com

Also, if interested, you can read the outlines for my books (as well as the first chapter for each title) Any feedback on the material would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanking you in anticipation

My best regards

Guy

What if looking at the face of the man you loved meant death?

Years ago, warrior Durren Drakkonwehr was cursed by a mage. Now feared and reviled as the Shadow Man, he keeps to himself, only going to town to trade rare bloodstones--petrified dragon's blood--for supplies. Though he hides his face, he can't hide his heart from the woman who haunts his dreams...

Needing bloodstones for a jewelry commission, Mirianna and her father journey across the dreaded Wehrland where the beast-men roam. When their party is attacked, only the Shadow Man can save them. Strangely drawn to him, Mirianna offers herself in return for her father's rescue.

Living in the ruined fortress with the Shadow Man, Mirianna slowly realizes that a flesh-and-blood man--not a fiend--hides there in hoods and darkness. But are love and courage enough to lift the curse and restore the man?

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Victoria, but feel free to just call me Tori.

I read a fair few fantasy books, and the books I write do often have a fantasy theme, but they're children's books, so I've posted about them in the children's fiction section instead of this section. I've had positive reviews from adults too though; I know for a fact I have a fan over the age of 60, and I'm not talking about my Grandma either, LOL!

Lee French | 2 comments Hello!

I've written two fantasy novels and one short story.

The Fallen: The Fallen is the first of a series called The Greatest Sin, which follows the trials and travails of a snarky fortune teller who hates people while simultaneously needing them to retain her sanity. Chavali is a contact telepath and a seer, which means she's seen way too much about way too many people to have any respect whatsoever for anyone. Book 2 is already written and in revisions!

Damsel in Distress: Damsel In Distress is a standalone novel. It's one part Regency, one part adventure, and one part horror story. Sabetia meets the man of her dreams, only to discover he's really the man of her nightmares. Raised to be docile and submissive, it takes a jolt to the system to wake her up, and once she's awake, she'll never go back to sleep.

Shadow & Spice: Set in the same world as Damsel In Distress, Shadow & Spice is lighter fare, in every way. Three words: cats, adventure, romance. This short story follows Shadow, a familiar with the night off. He gets himself into trouble and back out again, and maybe finds love along the way.

Rose Summers | 7 comments Hello!

Immortal Requiem is my first full length novel, in a series of five.

Nearly one hundred and fifty years have passed since the apocalypse took place, leaving the world in an eternal night and awakening all matter of supernatural beings imaginable—ravaging and killing everything in their wake. Follow Evangeline, a half angel, half demon woman, who has had her emotions locked deep inside herself by the cursed blessing of immortality, as she travels the darkness of Europe's dangerous terrain, seeking the meaning to her seemingly endless life. Guided only by an old sorceress and her own conflicting instincts, Evangeline ignores the prophecies surrounding her parents and their death, carving her own way through the endless night of our now destroyed world. Killing demons, and evading angels around every corner, Evangeline ruthlessly fights for her friends—a half demon and a vampire—as they seek revenge for the loss of their loved ones, at the hand of a demon named Falter. A chance meeting with a half angel and a new realization spirals her world into new chaos as she struggles with her two opposing sides and what she must do. Endless action and emotion wait behind each page; breathtaking suspense and heart aching tragedy are never too far behind Evangeline as she struggles to learn who she really is, and how important she is to the existence of the whole world.

Hello all! I am E.J. Norris, author of the newly published novel The Mirror and The Sword. I'm pretty new here on Goodreads, but I'm loving what I see here and I hope that you all will think of my epic tale as a rip-roaring good read. Here is the teaser.

"Prepare yourself for an epic journey!
In The Mirror and The Sword, young Tenny of Ked finds that all is not what it seems in his native land of Chereyla. He lives in a world full of lies which pave the way to death and destruction. With just a mirror showing a path and a sword for protection, Tenny journeys to the true kingdom and is faced with perils and dark forces at every turn."
Will he reach his destination alive?"

I really enjoyed writing this. It brought me light in the darkest of places and I hope it will do the same for you. It can be fond at the following link:

Heather Rigney (heatherrigney) | 1 comments Dear kind reviewers,

I would like to offer my dark historical fantasy, Waking the Merrow for your review consideration. My release date is June 9, 2014.
I would be happy to provide ARCs in your preferred format.

Synopsis:
In 1772, angry Rhode Island colonists set fire to a British ship, sparking the American Revolution. Taxation without representation was a motivator. So was the vengeful, man-eating mermaid who had it out for the commanding officer.

That was then. This is now.

Mermaids, or merrow, still hunt in Narragansett Bay, but these days they keep a lower profile.

At night, centuries-old Nomia seduces smutty frat boys, lures them into icy waters, and feeds them to her voracious kin. By day, she and her half-breed daughter attempt to blend at the coastal Village Playground.

But Nomia slips up. She makes a friend. Then she makes that friend disappear, and someone notices.

Thirty-something Evie McFagan just wants to make it through working motherhood. But she’s a blistering stew of issues—snarky alcoholic and a friendless funeral director who just witnessed Nomia dismembering a guy at the nearby yacht club.

When Evie believes a mermaid stole her baby, who will help? The Merrow of Ireland? Or maybe anti-hero Evie will surprise everyone, including herself, and will summon the strength to save her own family.

Intertwining the stories of two primordial families with the colonial history of Narragansett Bay, Waking the Merrow is a dark historical fantasy.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
