I am currently reading KILLER OF ORCHIDS by Ralph Ashworth...why? Because I like mysteries and it is a book club choice.I should have the review out soon...almost done with the book...it is pretty good and characters are funny.
I just finished City of Ashes and am finishing up the series with City of Glass. This series has been a blast to read - thank you to everyone who suggested it!

I am reading The Finkler Question and The Dead Secret with an amazing group of friends on this site.

It's when I was a student- one of my majors was philosophy and I was the student representative to the university for our department. (Ie, the person who got all of the funding.)

It came from the publisher, Crown Archetype, Random House.

I am now reading an alternate universe urban fantasy called Death Blowsby D. D. Barant. I read about it on the Urban Fantasy group and it sounded intriguing--particularly the comic book aspect. But I was also told that I needed to read the first book in the seriesDying Bitesfirst for background. So I did that and didn't regret it. The author's worldbuilding is excellent. I think Death Blows is even better.

I really got into the characters and especially liked the relationship development.
I am currently reading Winter's Bone. My friend has the movie and loved it. I will watch it after I read the book.

Right now I am reading Sharon Kay Penman's historicl mystery "The Queen's Man." The queen is Eleanor of Aquataine, The king, her son Richard 1 (also known as Richard the Lion Hearted) has been missing since his ship sunk carrying him home form the crusades. Sharon Kay Penman has written several well-received seris of novels about England and Wales in the late 12th & early 13th. century. She is known for her accuracy in every detail.I am also readidng 1491 which is about America just before the white man began to settle here. This author is also very accurate & writes in great detail about the various (many) groups of people living on the American continent when the first Europeans arrived.
I am also reading a book of poetry by A.R. Ammons which ws in a sale bin at the local Good Will store.
I try to read abook or from a book of poetry every week.
I was at the library looking for something different in the biography section and ran across The Wagner Clan: The Saga of Germany's Most Illustrious and Infamous Family by Jonathan Carr. It begins with the famous composer Richard and his wife Cosima (daughter of Franz Liszt) and carries the story forward through the family's relationship with Hitler to contemporary times. Just started it but so far, it is intriguing. A very complex family.
Rick wrote: "Sharon Kay Penman is a member of our James Mason Group"Ask her if she'll be a James Mason "Featured Author" next year. Another group I belong to invites authors to drop in and discuss their novels, which are featured for about a month. I think the most gracious one was Susan Wittig Albert who dropped by almost daily for a month.

True, but she hasn't posted in a while, that I can see. And it looks like a bunch of us, including you, seem to be on a Penman kick and or read a lot from the periods of history she writes about. I know that when Susan Wittig Albert joined us, and she writes 2 historical series, I added about 10 non-fiction books she used for research to my TBR list.

Sharon wasone of the first join The James Mason Group- and she has sent me a few letters which I feel she won't mind my sharing, as they explain her lack of participation..
"Hi, Rick,
I'll be happy to join but in all honesty, I doubt that I'll be able to participate very much. I am facing a killer deadline for my current novel, Lionheart, only two years instead of the usual three, and am in full panic mode most of the time! My publisher suggested I go on Goodreads and Facebook, etc, and I am very glad I did, but it is becoming more and more difficult to find the time for anything not directly related to work--which is sad, but true, nonetheless. I am about to leave on a research trip for Lionheart, but will drop in again when I get back."
"You'll have to tell me sometime how you selected the name for your group. I had the pleasure of meeting James Mason very briefly back in the 1980's; I was going into a studio for an interview as he was coming out, and I felt like a groupie!
Sharon"

I'm currently reading The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. It was suggested to me by a friend, and so far I enjoy it. I read 19 Minutes this past summer and so far, I am enjoying The Hour I First Believed as much, if not more than, 19 Minutes, which I loved.

As ever, I'm juggling several books. I've finished Volume 1 of Gone With the Wind and although I'm enjoying it, I'm taking a break before getting back to Scarlet O'Hara et al (that book is so very l-o-n-g!) Also reading We Need to Talk About Kevin which I'm finding compulsive in a rather morbid kind of way and The Little Stranger for another Good Reads monthly read - a little bit spooky and a little bit historic, I think this a beautifully written book. Finally, reading Utterly Me Clarice Bean aloud to my daughters - Lauren Child has a wondeful ability to write how children speak, we all think this book is fantastic!

I finished Those Who Save Us last night. I liked it but it was not what I was expecting at all. Now I am reading The Historian not far into it but it seems like it will be a good read...I hope.

It is an intelligent book, great use of language and it raises very difficult, complex questions and I like books to do this!
I'm reading His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. JUst started the first volume, but so far so good.

It was pretty interesting and I enjoyed it because it is a very different from any take on vampires I have read before.

I am reading The Gift. I always enjoy reading a christmas/holiday themed read at this time of the year. This one is a great, nearly at the end and looking forward to finding out what happens..and I love Cecelias style of writing. The first book of hers I read last year which was 'The Book Of Tomorrow'. I am hooked on her books now!
I'm reading Dune and I'm picking up from comments here that it's a love it or hate it book. I loved it and it's a re-read for me. I find that, now that I'm older and a mom, I feel more sympathy for Paul's mother, Jessica. I'm also reading The Inheritance of Loss and The Finkler Question. And An Irish Country Christmas because I love sappy, sentimental books at Christmas. And Truman and A Reliable Wife. (And two or three more)
The Call of the Wild and White Fang. Ought to make Chicago's winter seem mild. I vaguely remember "Call" from my youth, but I've never read "White Fang".
Rose wrote: "I am currently reading Winter's Bone. My friend has the movie and loved it. I will watch it after I read the book."It's a great movie, but the book is incredible! Enjoy.
I've read outstanding reviews for the film Winter's Bone and of the lead actress in particular, I hope to see it but now I know it's based on a book I will have to read it first!
Well I was reading The Library Of Shadows by Mikkel Birkegaard, but I put it down for now. I will read it. I have to. It is taunting me from the side of my bed. I just couldn't get into it with my limited reading time. Soon. I am now reading some light stuff...Working for the Devil by Lilith Saintcrow.
Eileen wrote: "I am reading a goodreads giveaway, "Sal Mineo." Since I live in LA, I've been fascinated by his rise to fame and his tragic murder. This is a good biography."I won that one, too, Eileen. I'm looking forward to reading it. As a teenager, I loved Sal Mineo!!
I'm reading Solitaria, a GR giveaway win, which is very good. Also, am reading Truman & I hope to catch up with the group during my days off for Christmas. Truman is excellent so far. Started Track of the Cat, the first Anna Pigeon mystery. My husband likes them so I'm buying them for him. I have to read them before I trade or donate. :-) Will be starting The Dead Secret tomorrow & Little Dorrit. Those 2 & Truman are for group reads. Oh, and I'm reading Glazed Murder, a cozy mystery that was the first book I bought from the iPhone book store. I have another non-fiction that really got pushed to the back burner when I started winning books. I love reading multiple books, but get stressed if I get too many going at once! LOL
Em wrote: "I've read outstanding reviews for the film Winter's Bone and of the lead actress in particular, I hope to see it but now I know it's based on a book I will have to read it first!"Read it first for certain! As good as the movie is, and it's really good, the book is amazing.
