Quarter 3: Passionate Readers Seek Truths Unveiling Stories
July 1 - September 30, 2025

With 26 diverse tasks to complete, one for each letter of the alphabet, you'll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of genres and perspectives. Let your curiosity be your guide as you set sail on this exciting expedition through the world of books!

Challenge Rules:
📚 Standard Challenge Rules are SUSPENDED for this challenge.
This means you have more flexibility in choosing books to fulfill the prompts, including shorter page counts, graphic novels, etc. HOWEVER, be aware that if you use a book in this challenge that doesn't meet the Standard Challenge Rules, you won't be able to use that same book for other group challenges that do require adherence to the Standard Challenge Rules.
🔖 Each book can only be used ONCE within this challenge, even if it fits multiple prompts.
🎨 You are encouraged to interpret the prompts creatively, but your interpretation should be reasonable and justifiable.
📖 There are no restrictions on book format (e-book, audiobook, physical book). For example, for the task "Audiobook narrated by the author", you don't have to listen to the audiobook for the book to qualify, it just needs to be a book whose author narrated the audiobook edition.
🗓️ You may complete the prompts in any order within each quarter.

Optional Challenge Booster:
🔤 Alliterative Adventure: For an extra challenge, try to complete each task using a book whose title begins with the same letter as the task. For example:
• "Adventure novel set in an unexplored land," read Amazon Adventure
• "Biography of a famous explorer or pioneer," read Barrow's Boys
• "Classic novel published before 1900," read Crime and Punishment
This is entirely optional and can be applied to as many or as few prompts as you like!

Tasks:

Anthology of short stories
Bildungsroman (coming-of-age story)
Climate fiction (cli-fi) novel
Dual timeline historical fiction
Eco-thriller or environmental mystery
Folklore or mythology
Graphic memoir or autobiographical comic
Hybrid genre book (e.g., historical fantasy, sci-fi western)
Illustrated novel or heavily illustrated fiction
Journey-inspired novel
Künstlerroman (novel about an artist's growth to maturity)
Literary magazine (read an entire issue)
Microhistory (nonfiction book focusing on a very specific topic)
Novella published as a standalone book
Oral history or collection of interviews
Philosophical fiction that explores complex ideas
Queer romance or LGBTQ+ love story
Retellings of myths or legends
Speculative fiction based on a historical "what if" scenario
Translated work from a language you don't speak/read
Urban fiction or street lit novel
Vignette collection or interconnected short stories
Winner of a literary prize you've never explored before
Xenial themed book (about hospitality or host/guest relationships)
Young adult fantasy with unique world-building
Zealous eco-fiction revealing environmental truths

Quarter 3

🔤 = Bonus Alliterative Option
✅ = Completed

Book: | Read: | Justification:

Anthology of short stories

Bildungsroman (coming-of-age story) | Book: A Thousand Splendid Suns | Read:9-Jul-2025 | Justification: Both Mariam and Laila go through major coming-of-age arcs in a brutal world.

Climate fiction (cli-fi) novel

Dual timeline historical fiction | Book: The Thirteenth Tale | Read: 28-Jul-2025 | Justification: Exactly that.

Eco-thriller or environmental mystery

Folklore or mythology Book: A Curse Dark as Gold | Read: 12-Aug-2025 | Justification: A Rumpelstiltskin retelling set in an industrial-revolution-era wool mill, leans into a fairy-tale atmosphere while weaving in elements of English rural folklore and superstition.

Graphic memoir or autobiographical comic
Hybrid genre book (e.g., historical fantasy, sci-fi western)
Illustrated novel or heavily illustrated fiction
Journey-inspired novel

Künstlerroman (novel about an artist's growth to maturity) | Book: My Friends | Read:23-Jul-2025 | Justification: Without spoilers, it fits!

Literary magazine (read an entire issue)

Microhistory (nonfiction book focusing on a very specific topic) | Book: Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection | Read: 7-Jul-2025 | Justification: A focus on Tuberculosis

Novella published as a standalone book
Oral history or collection of interviews
Philosophical fiction that explores complex ideas

Queer romance or LGBTQ+ love story | Book: Fable for the End of the World | Read: 1-Jul-2025 | Justification: There is a canonically queer central relationship, and it’s emotionally foundational to the plot.

Retellings of myths or legends | Book: The Crane Husband | Read:8-Jul-2025 | Justification: Novella inspired by the Japanese tale "The Crane Wife"

Speculative fiction based on a historical "what if" scenario

Translated work from a language you don't speak/read | 🔤 Book: The Odyssey | Read: 31-Jul-2025 | Justification: Translated from Ancient Greek!

Urban fiction or street lit novel | 🔤 Book: Ulysses | Read: 30-Jul-2025 | Justification: A quintessential example of an early literary exploration of urban life. Set in Dublin and focused almost entirely on the city’s streets, neighborhoods, and inhabitants, the novel dives deep into the psychological, cultural, and physical landscape of a single day in the life of its characters. Joyce’s intense attention to class, identity, inner struggle, and the rhythms of city life align with the spirit of the genre, even if his style is experimental and literary. It’s urban fiction before the term existed.

Vignette collection or interconnected short stories Book: What You Are Looking For Is in the Library | Read: 7-Aug-2025 | Justification: It’s structured as five distinct but connected character stories, each focusing on a different person who visits the library and meets the same librarian. The characters don’t all directly interact with one another, but the stories are linked thematically and through the recurring librarian figure.

Winner of a literary prize you've never explored before | Book: The Berry Pickers | Read: 2-Jul-2025 | Justification: Unexplored literary awards for Andrew Carnegie Medal for Fiction (2024), OLA Evergreen Award Nominee (2024), Atwood Gibson Writers' Trust Fiction Prize Nominee for Finalist (2023), Barnes & Noble Book of the Year Award Nominee (2023)
