DQ'S Day 3 Chapter 8 - Chapter 12
10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
Probably, he seemed to of lost his head a bit there and gone completely out of father mode (is he ever really in this mode?) and into warrior mode. It's probably better for everyone we didn't have to find out.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
I think water is still the most versatile if you can master all the ways you can actually use it. Though I guess that's true of all the powers. The healing aspect of the blood power is pretty cool too.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
Maybe not to that specific place, but yes they did. And it makes sense for them to attack there. It's symbolic if nothing else. And I think it was a location of a big loss during the last war? I may not be remembering that correctly though.

17. This section is deeply emotional and heart-wrenching, filled with death and suffering. The only thing that makes it bittersweet rather than purely tragic is that Mamoru finds peace and happiness in his final moments. I thought his death scene was beautifully written. Do you like how the author blends the sadness with these moments of beauty? Or would you have preferred a different approach to his death?
I didn’t mind his death. It was okay. But I find all the unspoken but thought in the mind explanation insanely annoying. Mamoru did it and I could forgive him he was only a teen, but his mother annoyed me.
18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?
Honestly, I like him the most. Even though his attitude is messed up, he is the most honest of them all. Misaki is a liar and a fool. She willingly played the subservient good daughter, even though she had experienced something else, had an alternative. She knew what she was getting into and she chose it. But to make it worse she was unkind and a coward when it came to Robin. Takeru on the other hand hasn’t left Kaigen. He was born & raised in one area, he’s comparatively ignorant. He lives as he believes the world is. Misaki willingly fosters the patriarchy, even though she could work towards change.
19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again?
I like Hiroshi. He is a rather clever and observant child. I really hope his mom can be better and not so angry that her children feel like their father. I feel in the last chapter, Misaki has made some real headway on her self awareness. I’m starting to dislike her less and have more faith in her. It only took the destruction of her village and the death of her son to open her eyes.
20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?
I ended up reading the rest of the book before I answered this question. So I will just say that what happened was exactly what I thought would happen from the government. I had very low expectations and the they met those.
Day 4 DQs (Chapters 13 to 16)
13. There are multiple references to the snow and the mountain turning red. Scenes like this are for me a stark reminder of the brutality and bloodiness of war, rather than the romanticised glory of protection.
Is there a scene or a moment from your life you can pinpoint when the realities of war struck you the way it did Mamoru?
Events like the Oklahoma City bombing and 9/11 come to mind but those are isolated incidents more than war. My family has a long history of military service, including several current active duty. There is nothing romantic about watching someone you love ship out to parts unknown (because usually they can't tell you were they are really going) and wondering if it's the last conversation you'll have.
14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?
I think the chickens are coming home to roost for her and things are going to be a bit awkward when her husband arrives at the house.
15. Since the beginning, we are repeatedly told that the Matsuda family is powerful, important, etc. We get to see this over the battle as the two brothers join forces and create the Matsuda Dragon.
Powerful families put a lot of pressure on their children to carry on the legacy. We see this in Mamoru and Hiroshi, who at five years old is determined to do better than his peers at any cost. Do you think this is a practice that should be continued in today's day and age?
Pressure to succeed can take many forms and not all are toxic. So my answer here is, it depends. People who have vast privilege should have high expectations on them. Unrealistic expectations? No. But expectations that they will use their privilege to leave this world better than they found it? Yes.
16. Well, this has been quite the bloody section. Takashi's last order to Mamoru, Mamoru having to order his master to leave him and his having to face all the enemy himself, Misaki desperately protecting her home, the killing of all these mighty warriors of the Sword of Kaigen...
What I'm wondering though, is that if such a bloody battle that spans across six chapters and 15% of the novel is in the middle of the story, what happens after? Do you have any predictions for what happens after this battle?
Lots of grief, some rage. Maybe an uncovering of all the lies (Misaki, the Emperor, Tekure coming to terms with the backwardness towards women). And even if the battle is over, that doesn't mean the war is. There could be more to come?

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
Oh, yes. I really don't like him and am glad that he got interrupted.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
I understand it more but still not fully. I like the blood healing power, that would be helpful.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I can imagine that some people knew but not a lot. My thought was that they would be attacked because of their valuable fighting skills.

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
Oh yes, he doesn't sound like he loves nor cares about his family. Also has anger issues.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
It's still confusing. There are so many new terms and names being consistently introduced, I'm not enjoying it.
I would like to control wind, its power is devastating and I would like to be able to stop it at will.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I think no one on the island knew of the attack, except maybe outsiders. I'm surprised that Kwang Chul-Hee and his father, who has access to communication systems, didn't know of the attack.
They are attacking the village because it's on a island and operates as a buffer and is on the way to the mainland/emperor.

When I was 14, I went to Auschwitz. It was devastating to see that place in person. Now, 15 years later, I still think about that regularly.
14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?
I thought it was good and necessary for Misaki and the overall story.
I mean sure, children should be encouraged to do well but there's a difference in encouragement and pressure. Pressure is not the way to go in my opinion.
That's what I had been wondering too. I was hoping for peace but that was too unlikely for it being only the halfway point of the book.
Day 5 DQs (Chapters 17 to 21)
I thought it was well done and didn't go into cornball territory which happens more often than it should in books/movies/tv with scenes like this.
18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?
I have a feeling still waters run deep with him. Like REALLY deep, extensive, emotional childhood trauma deep. Honestly he's had so little actual page time I don't have a good handle on his character. I have a good handle on how others, especially his wife perceive him. But I don't have any idea on his real motivations and how on point Misaki is about her husband. I'm not sure he every let her in, even a little bit.
19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again?
No, I think that part of her died with her oldest child. Misaki will be a different person moving forward I think and it will be interesting to watch all of that unfold. Or I hope so anyway.
20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?
I think a hot mess dog & pony show will happen and a huge cover up. My guess is the Empire is bleeding money and has no way to actually be of much help to its citizens in need. Especially on the scale with which that aid is now needed.

DQs Day 1
Ch 1 to 4
1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
I've heard quite a bit of it as it was quite hyped as a very good self-published book and suddenly many, many special editions popped up. I haven't read anything by the author though. My expectations are somewhat high in that I hope to find a really good stand-alone fantasy; concise, developed characters, good story - not a watered-down start to what will become at least a trilogy.
2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
No idea how the Emperor has done it but the author certainly has made it clear that they're a tiny little bit insulated from the rest of the world. I assume it was only possible if the elders were in on it, those who apparently fought in this war where there were practically no casualties.
3.) Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths I think. I like that one of the main characters in an epic fantasy is not a 20 something who just happens to master everything in 5 pages. What are you most curious about her at the moment. Also, shout out to her friends, who seem like real women-friends. Yay!
Misaki really does seem like a very interesting character, and I couldn't agree more. Finally someone who knows stuff because they learned for years! What I am most curious about currently is how she came to be married to a man from some backwater island who must have laid down the law before they ever got married? She must have sort of known what she would get herself into, if maybe not all the details. Why would she do this to herself if she could be so much more?
4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
I really, really hope so!! Because Mamoru's father, Misaki's husband sounds like an utter *insert whatever insult you would like*. But I do wonder why he is like he is. Not having any patience for teaching his son is one thing, but forbidding his wife from talking about her past, and more specifically the fact that she is a sword fighter? He is probably in on the whole conspiracy thing to keep the little peninsula isolated and docile.
5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
It sounds interesting so far, but we have only just learned a tiny little tidbit I think. Especially since there are quite a lot of myths being thrown about concerning the special talents of certain families.

25. It breaks my heart that such a dramatic confrontation was necessary to fix their marriage, but I was also cheering loudly for Misaki! How did you feel during the duel?
I wouldn't prescribe a duel to the death in order to fix any marriage. This couple needed counselling and eventually a separation.
26. Throughout the book, I’ve hated Takeru for his cruelty toward his wife and children, and for his sexist, “I’m better than you” attitude. But these chapters made me reconsider. Yeah, he’s an ass—but maybe he’s also a victim of abuse who never got the help he needed to become better. “My brother was my shelter in all things.” That line broke my heart a little. What do you think of Takeru? Does his conversation with his wife during the duel—and his behavior toward his kids afterward—change your opinion of him?
Takeru needs therapy for his issues, especially since he's working them out on his wife. People don't change that dramatically.
No, my opinion of him didn't change. There was no character development and that conversation should've been had much sooner, preferably before the marriage.
27. Do you think the missing child holds any significance in the plot?
Yes
28. ‘I will never raise another generation as blind as my own.’ That line made me want to cheer out loud. How did you feel when you read it?
Hopefully they stick to it.

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interrupted?
100% that is his style.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
I'm not sure that I'm completely understanding it, it all still seems kind of vague to me. I don't know which power I would choose because of this.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
Possibly, it seems like the friend was able to warn her cryptically about the impending attack and might have warned others. Easy target? Know that they have magic/powers?

Day 5 - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Ch 1 to 4
1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
I hadn't heard of this book and I haven't read any other books by the author. No expectations.
2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
I think it was quite effective. There's technology and events that they don't seem to know about.
Yay!
I've read quite a bit further ahead so I know what happens a bit later. I liked Misaki from the start though.
4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
I really dislike him too.
5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
I like it. Characters seem to take pride in what they can do.

Chap 5 to 7
6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
It's not surprising as it seems to be based off of how the tradional Japanese see family status and certain clans being more noble than others.
7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
I've read a bit further already.
8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
When she said her family were very traditional, but she was allowed to attend the school anyway. And in the end she would still be married off and just be a wife/mother.
9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
That would be nice.

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
Yeah, probably.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
Ice or just something to do with water sounds pretty cool. But being a healer would be nice too.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I'm sure other people would have known. People close to the Emperor probably.
DQs day 6: Chapter 22 - Chapter 26
21. Taking the dead from their families is harsh and even worse when Takeru uses his powers to stop Misaki. Do you think this was an emotional outburst from Takeru or just a controlling one? The chapter ends with Misaki almost seeming to want just any sign of emotion even if it’s painful for her.
I think it was a bit of an emotional release for him. But I think he needed her to keep it together and tow the line in order for him not to go nuclear and like kill everyone or something. There is more there I think. They both suck at communicating with each other though.
22. The blood power described by Tsusano is pretty cool (and still Avatar coded), do you think Misaki will be able to wield it one day, or do you think like she does that she will never have the right willpower?
I hope she figures it out, that seems pretty cool.
23. “…but when the bloody truth stared them full in the face, they were more than capable of comprehending it. They were more than capable of anger. Misaki wished she knew how to calm that anger. If she had, she would have saved herself years of pain.” Do you think that sentiment is correct, or do you believe that anger is sometimes needed in order to push action to happen?
Like anything you need the balance. But if you hold onto anger too hard and for too long it can very much turn to bitterness. And no good ever comes from that.
24. Do you think Misaki’s sleeping jiya meant to hurt Takeru, or do you think it was purely coincidental? After all she’s been through, it seems like it could have been intentional, especially since she was dreaming of Mamoru at that time
No, I don't think she did. She needs an outlet for that emotion and it's finding away when she's not on guard. And she is very, very hurt woman.

Day 7
DQs Chapters 27-29
25. It breaks my heart that such a dramatic confrontation was necessary to fix their marriage, but I was also cheering loudly for Misaki! How did you feel during the duel?
That some times to fix something you need to take it completely apart or you'll miss some of the damage that needs to be fix. I think this is pretty much what happened here. It was 15 years or whatever in the making. They both needed this confrontation in the worst way.
Yes and so many things made a lot more sense. What a sad childhood he had. I'm glad he wants better for his family and now sees a path for that to happen. I also like that he didn't suddenly become a different person. He was still him, but someone who was healing.
27. Do you think the missing child holds any significance in the plot?
I've finished so skipping this question.
28. ‘I will never raise another generation as blind as my own.’ That line made me want to cheer out loud. How did you feel when you read it?
I think this is one of the messages of the book. When you know better, do better, and it's never too late to learn and grow.

Day 8
Ch 30 - end
29. In reconnecting with Robin, Misaki realizes that she is no longer the Misaki from those days, just as he is no longer the same Robin. Do you have a story about yourself you have carried for years that is no longer true about the person you are today? Or perhaps, sense there is a self-narrative you have been carrying that you need to shed in order to grow?
Nothing specific, but I think to a certain extent yes. There's the person the world tells us we should be or things we should want. And then there is figuring out what we actually want for a happy life.
32. “...a person’s tragedy doesn’t define them or cancel all the good in their life.” This quote reminds me of the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold, so the break and subsequent repair is what makes the piece beautiful and unique. What do you think about Misaki and Takeru’s newfound communication and future relationship? What about Misaki’s new self awareness?
I think they will slowly build the type of marriage and family they both deserve after all they have been through. I like that these characters are a bit older than the norm for this genre. We are never too old to do better. Be better and heal.
33. One theme that jumped out at me while reading was the tension between expectations based on dreams and the acceptance/embracing of reality, with all its ugliness and beauty. Do you believe that setting expectations - parent to child, wife to husband, self to self - is a root cause of unhappiness?
No, not completely anyway. A certain level of expectations is important. Not an expectation of you will be president of the US, an Olympic gold medalist and a Rhodes scholar. But that you will be a productive member of society and not a bung-hole. But clinging to an unrealistic Pintrest/social media type expectation that hides a lot of truth is not good and leads to so many problems.
33. I loved how the ending of the book left such hope for the future - not an easy future, but one with stronger relationships, better communication, and new self-acceptance. But now I want more! What will Izumo be like when he gets older? What’s the story with the creature collecting children with talents? What was your overall take on the book? Will you be reading more by this author?
I will be reading more by the author. I think I read the author walked away from doing a series because too problematic to tie it all together and have it make sense. Which I can see and I respect the walking away instead of forcing it. Maybe there will be a revisit in future, I'd be interested.

Ch 1 to 4
1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
I hadn't heard of the book or the author before, no expectations.
2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
The culture of Kaigen makes it easier to cut them off - they feel superior anyway. I was most interested at this point with the mix of technology and magic, which is most unusual in a fantasy.
Yay!
I love that a mother was a main character, and her supportive friends were wonderful. Hooray for (slightly) older characters!
4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
At this point of the book I really hoped this would happen.
5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
I like it, it's well described.

Chap 5 to 7
6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
Fantasy settings are often feudal in nature, so that feels more in keeping with a fantasy book than all the tech.
7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
I've finished the book, and I'm afraid I can't remember what I thought at this point about the two families. I probably did expect an important role for the Kotetsus.
8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
It did seem odd that she was allowed this liberal education when she was expected to come home and enter an arranged marriage immediately.
9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
I would've liked that.

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
It was definitely reading like that would've happened.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
I think Misaki's mix of powers is the most interesting, I'd have that, please. Ice power and healing.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
An isolated village is an easier target, maybe, with less hope of reinforcements arriving.
DQs Day 2
Chap 5 to 7
6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
Well, it's a hierarchy. It may not be perfect but it seems to work for the residents of Takayubi.
7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
They're blacksmiths, of course they'll play an important role. How else are all those mighty warriors going to get their swords? ;-)
They're going to need to step up their game though if a war is coming, which I suppose there is, and more swords are needed, seeing as they don't produce all that many a month. Besides, they are richer than the ruling families, so that is probably going to come into play as well.
8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
She was a bit of a bloodthirsty one, wasn't she? Woudn't have thought from the way she first appeared on the pages. The rest seems to fit though. At least there wasn't anything else that stood out to me.
9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
I sure hope so! Because, I'm not going to lie, it would be an awesome sight, and I hope Misaki will teach him a few more tricks. The conversation was a good one - I only hope Misaki isn't going to have to pay for it, should Takeru ever get wind of what was said.

I was in high school when the draft started, many of my friends had the bad luck of having a low draft number. It was sad that they had no choice.
14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?
I was happy to see this and necessary for the development of the story
I think time have changed for the most part only families with wealth have these expectations.
I really don’t know what will happen.

It was sad but appropriate
18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?
I really do think it is both. We are all a product of our upbringing and the path we choose.
19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again
She is changed and will never be passive again.
20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?
I do agree.

Ch 1 to 4
1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
Hadn't heard of this book or author before. So no expectations going in.
2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
I think the author did a good job in conveying their isolation. It threw me off a little when Kwang mentioned his father working for a communications company because I was thinking that this was set in olden times. It was also funny how he laughed at the propaganda that is taught in their schools. Total North Korea vibes. If someone is powerful enough (Emperor), people follow them and implement their rules. And get rid of anyone who doesn't.
Yay!
I want to know most about how she ended up where she is. Being a housewife doesn't suit/fit her.
4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
I hope so! And I hope she kicks his ass!
5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
I feel like there's so much more to learn about it. But it's fine, just another book with another magic system.

Chap 5 to 7
6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
Didn't really think anything of it. Just figured that's the way of things.
7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
It has to - otherwise, what's the point of telling it?! I'm not sure how things will pan out, but the relationships will come into play down the line. Whether it is the fracturing of those relationships or coming together.
8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
I loved those scenes, and made me love this character even more! Thought it was odd that she was sent to school when she was just going to be married off. But loved how she wanted to learn and wanted to fight the best.
9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
Yes, I think Misaki will turn out to be one of the heroes. She had been trained, had the skills (even if rusty). I can't wait to see her bloom again! And by Mamoru's side!

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
Absolutely, to get his point across. Like beat Mamoru into submission. He's not a good man.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
A little, but I don't feel I have a great grasp on it quite yet. Feel like we've only touched on it and don't know everything about it yet.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I think just those around the Emperor might know. I don't think he cares about his people. I feel like there has to be something they have or something of importance. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense to attack this little isolated village.

Chap 5 to 7
6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
I'm finally figuring a little more of it out! So far no big thoughts on this part.
7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
Hm, not sure on that either but perhaps.
8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
It was odd! For some reason I found chapter 6 a chore to get through and and dull but then I found chapter 7 quite interesting. I found we saw very different sides of a woman in both chapters. I was surprised more by her changes in chapter 7 after leaning on chapter 6 more than anything else.
9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
I really liked that moment and hope they stay close through the rest of the book

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
I haven’t heard about the author before, but I have heard about the book. It’s been recommended as a unique fantasy novel. However, I wasn’t interested in it too much because I’m not much of a fantasy reader. But since this was a BOM, I’m willing to give it a shot. I don’t have much expectation for it
2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
I think she did a good job of setting the isolation that the community had in this area. It was unnerving and relatable. The people of Kaigen were very proud of their history, which was constantly shared and twisted to make them seem special and powerful. There are definitely real-world examples of how that’s happened and people are constantly exposed to their country’s own propaganda.
3.) Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths, I think. I like that one of the main characters in an epic fantasy is not a 20-something who just happens to master everything in 5 pages. What are you most curious about her at the moment? Also, shout out to her friends, who seem like real women-friends. Yay!
I’m interested in hearing more about Misaki and her backstory. She seems like an interesting fantasy heroine so far, and her friends. I’m really curious about how she got married to Tekure since their values don’t seem to match. I couldn’t imagine how they would agree to marry each other.
4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on the page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
I really don’t understand how they got married to each other. He seems like the stereotype of a man who wants a traditional wife and is patriarchal. Why would he want to marry someone like Misaki, and why would she marry a man like him? I know the story wants to have a feminist spin to it, and having a chauvinist husband character could move the plot along. However, there needs to be a convincing backstory because this whole premise seems out of character.
5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
Fantasy is one of my least favorite genres, so I’m hoping the magic system and world-building don’t get too complicated. That usually overwhelms me and takes me away from enjoying a novel.

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
It’s interesting to read about them, and it kind of makes sense to me that certain families are very powerful and influential in a small community. I enjoyed reading about the history which gave me a more fleshed-out picture of the empire.
7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
I think so, but not sure how. There’s way too much story and detail for it not to play an important role later. I expect there will be a large full-scale war, and so the Kotesus will be a bigger presence in the storyline. I’m just not sure how interesting it would be to hear more about a weapons maker.
8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, or odd?
It’s not shocking, other than she had deep feelings for someone else. There are just so many questions about her. I’m not shocked that she was a warrior because that was already implied. It just gives me more questions about how she got married and became a mother. Why did she give up her other life? It’s so out of character.
9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
Yes, I can see they growing closer together by the end of the novel. She will be a big part of his training and learning.

10. Mamoru is becoming friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more, and finally has a fallout with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki hadn't accidentally interrupted?
I don’t think he would have. I think something came out of him that was so shocking that he would have stopped anyway.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred? Which power would you want?
I’m starting to understand it more, and it’s quite nice. Magic systems are usually boring to me, and I really hate it when they’re super complicated. This was easy to follow in the best way, and I found it interesting.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why are they attacking such an isolated village?
Realistically, I think there would be some whispers and hints that war is coming. The townsfolk still have contact with people from the outside so they can communicate freely through that. I can see it being hushed or people not believing the rumors.

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
Yes, I don't like his father - or really any of the men on the island or whatever. Finally Misaki is rebelling slightly too.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
A bit more. I think the blood thing is awesome
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
Others outside the town, they kept themselves very isolated and stubbornly trusting, so no one else in the town. Wanted to strangle half hte characters. I think the group is going after most towns that speak of power and strength

Ch 1 to 4
1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
I had a different book from the author on my want to read list but had not been previously interested in this one. I expected it to be high fantasy.
2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
Some of the technology did not entirely make sense with cell phones and TV and some of the Empire knowing this stuff and others not. It would have worked better if the technology level was set in the 1980s as that was much easier to have state run media. I was disappointed by the world building so far as I hoped for entirely new geography and cultures, but the map is just the world upside down with slightly different coastlines. Many of the stereotypes in the current world are just used here which is lazy writing.
Yay!
I have read ahead but really like that she had female and supportive friends. I read a lot of fantasy these days with middle age women characters but recognize that is still more rare in high fantasty, which this really isn’t.
4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
I have read ahead.
5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
It seems like Airbender and I have never even seen Airbender but you have nations and specific powers and bloodlines, and reverse historical slavery and racism is kind of weird as it is trying to use existing cultures without wanting to deal with real history.

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
I think so as he clearly had lost control of his temper. He is constantly stated that he is not a good teacher or really father.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
Most are entirely family and blood line based. It still seems overly simplistic with it all being nationality based. We have fire, wind and water/ice. (And the blood one on the side and you seem to be able to have blood plus ice but not the major elements together). Still seems lazy worldbuilding to me.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I feel like an Empire that keep this much control on its villages would have controlled the mail better. The village is known for its ice magic so makes sense to decimate it first, but someone should have seen the armada at sea. This world has modern technology and there seems to be time when the author remembers that and forgets.

DQ'S Day 3
Chapter 8 - Chapter 12
10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?
Probably once more, for good measure, because the little shit dared defy him and the brainwashing they're all taught since the moment they are born. Takeru might be an asshole but he also isn't going to maim his son. Beating a lesson into him is another thing however.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
Slowly starting to get a grip on it, yes.
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
They are attacking the coastline all over the Empire. Clearing the route for enemy ships with the entire Ranganese military to be able to land on the shores without being sunk into the sea before the fight even starts.
That the Emperor isn't giving his people real information is another story entirely, but other people certainly knew what was coming. That for some reason this backwater village still doesn't make use of modern technology is yet another story. That Takeru didn't further investigate when he felt the unusual winds out at sea is ridiculously short-sighted of a man as powerful as him.

Day 4 DQs (Chapters 13 to 16)
13. There are multiple references to the snow and the mountain turning red. Scenes like this are for me a stark reminder of the brutality and bloodiness of war, rather than the romanticised glory of protection.
It's incredibly powerful imagery. I was wondering from the first mention of the storm why it was rust-coloured. Wind is generally portrayed in other colours. Maybe it was indeed to bring home the fact that this was a storm meant to bring death and devastation, the snow and mountains then turning red is as stark an imagery as you can get. Nothing shows stains as well as white.
14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?
It was all bound to happen sooner or later, and obviously under these circumstances, things are going to be revealed, sometimes a tad quicker than expected and potentially in a less than ideal way.
I really loved the idea of the Matsuda Dragon, especially since it meant that the brothers work really well together despite their differences, and I assume their loathing at times of the parts they have to play in each other's lives. The Matsuda heritage may be a weighty beast, but not necessarily a bad one. Hiroshi will get to the point where he will choose what kind of person he will be, Mamoru is currently doing so. It will not prevent him from being a true Matsuda in the way his father and uncle want him to be.
Since the subtitle of the story is "A Theonite War Story", the bloody battle(s) are to be expected. And this is only one battle, spread across several locations, but it is just one battle. And a war consists of more than one battle. There are also all these personal battles going on, lots more character building to happen, lots of potential for more story. And I'm pretty sure that Misaki's past is going to play even more of a role than it has so far with her old room mate warning her - albeit a tad too late.

Chap 5 to 7
6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
It's very interesting. I think in many ways it mimics real life. I also find it fascinating how the people just seem to go along with it so freely.
7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
I'm not sure how but I think it will definitely come into play later in the story.
8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
I was bothered that Misaki became so submissive in her marriage so quickly! It bothers me so much that she started to believe that she was responsible for her miscarriages. I also felt so bad for her when it came to bonding with her infant. She seemed to lose so much confidence when she married.
9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
It was heartwarming. I liked knowing that there is indeed a bond between them. To see them side by side as warriors would be awesome!

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interrupted?
I am so glad that Mamoru and Kwang are becoming better friends. I think they balance each other out and really help each other see through things they both assumed were truths because of what they had been told while growing up in their respective regions.
I do think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have interrupted. I think he's just not a good person to begin with.
11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
Yes but it's a lot to be honest. I think I like the ice power. It can be used of so many things. We've seen it used as a fall barrier, used to cool a flame being used as a weapon, used to cut through objects, etc. I keep envisioning Spiderman except instead of webs, freezing water comes out instead!
12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I'm not sure that anyone else did. I think there is fear that the village has powerful people with powerful skills that may impede the desires of the Emperor.

Ch 30 - end
No, not really.
Seemed a bit rushed after so much pain but glad there was some good to come out of it and some communication. I hope this makes a healthier household for the children to grow up in.
33. One theme that jumped out at me while reading was the tension between expectations based on dreams and the acceptance/embracing of reality, with all its ugliness and beauty. Do you believe that setting expectations - parent to child, wife to husband, self to self - is a root cause of unhappiness?
I agree with others that expecting others to change for you or to meet your reality if very likely going to fail and lead to resentment which can cause all types of harm in relationships.
34. My post-script says there is another series that takes place 13 years later, so I assume with the children and the kidnapped army. I just looked it up and it appears to have been written first and be portal fantasy and deals more with the flipped racism issue. It is Daniel as the MC so that makes sense why we got the scene at the end more so to try to get people to read the other books. Considering I didn’t find this writing style my favorite, reading an earlier book that seems like a much messier plot is something I am highly unlikely to do. I still need to figure out if I will read the authors other book, which I had on my TBR before I read this one. I hope for some better world building if I do.
1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
I'm not familiar with the author and had no expectations going into the book, I did see it pass by on GR a couple of times.
2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
If I remember correctly the community is located on an island, that helps in shutting off the people from continental influence, unless it's been coerced with military force like Japan before the 19th century and commodore Matthew Perry's arrival. The people in the book are barely aware of what happens elsewhere partly due to living in the countryside and lacking proper infrastructure & communication systems.
Yay!
I like Misaki's chapters the best and I'm most interested in her. In contrast, so far, the chapters of Mamoru have been boring and nothing new. Like you mentioned, Misaki is a breath of fresh air for a main character.
I LOVE women supporting women.
4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
Oh yes ! I think she will show them that she's in fact a badass. A bit weird though if it comes off as a surprise to her family (maybe except her kids) because they know of her background. Weird that you would surpress instead of embrace certain skills and try to transfer them to your kids. I guess I don't have enough testosterone in me to understand.
5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
Confusing 😅 However it makes me think of Avatar, the Last Airbender and that helps. The discussions about phones and wifi etc caught me off guard.
