10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?

I think he may have. Just to make his point, of course. Good teacher he is not. Good father? Nope.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
It is becoming clearer, but how did it start? There is much more to learn. So far we have encountered water (ice), blood and wind? Between those three I would probably want to manipulate blood. Maybe.

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
It doesn't seem like anyone knew that war was coming. Which seems pretty stupid. Don't they have spies? Don't they watch tv?
I still don't have a grasp of why the Emperor is keeping them so isolated. We don't know enough about the politics yet.

I do believe he may have let his anger take over as children should follow and never question authority in their culture.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
Yes the magic system is showing more which is nice as it is different and I feel like we wont learn all of it completely. I would probably like the healing power that Mamoru has.

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
Yes I believe it is being hidden but I can't fathom why they would attack them other than to take out the legendary fighters and weapons.

Day 4 DQs (Chapters 13 to 16)

13. There are multiple references to the snow and the mountain turning red. Scenes like this are for me a stark reminder of the brutality and bloodiness of war, rather than the romanticised glory of protection.

Is there a scene or a moment from your life you can pinpoint when the realities of war struck you the way it did Mamoru?
Luckily I haven't been close to war. I think the biggest thing I have seen are the World Trade Center falling. I will always remember that day and where I was when I heard the news. Luckily I was not close to the impact zone and hope I never am in any war zone. I do feel for those, especially all the fighting recently with attacks on innocent people for awful reasons. Hate and difference is miserable and deadly.

14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?
I feel he inherited these skills from his mother. At first I was thinking she was part of the plane crash that Mamoru found.

15. Since the beginning, we are repeatedly told that the Matsuda family is powerful, important, etc. We get to see this over the battle as the two brothers join forces and create the Matsuda Dragon.

Powerful families put a lot of pressure on their children to carry on the legacy. We see this in Mamoru and Hiroshi, who at five years old is determined to do better than his peers at any cost. Do you think this is a practice that should be continued in today's day and age?
I think in some cultures this is still ingrained especially asian people. I have friends from Korean parents and they follow customs as the oldest is kindof the boss. If they say no you have to obey. Ex. If my friend wanted to go on a trip she would ask her sister for permission as they both help take care of their aging parents.

16. Well, this has been quite the bloody section. Takashi's last order to Mamoru, Mamoru having to order his master to leave him and his having to face all the enemy himself, Misaki desperately protecting her home, the killing of all these mighty warriors of the Sword of Kaigen...

What I'm wondering though, is that if such a bloody battle that spans across six chapters and 15% of the novel is in the middle of the story, what happens after? Do you have any predictions for what happens after this battle?
I'm thinking clean up and perhaps finding out why they are being attacked and why there was no warning. Perhaps something rebellious happens.

Is there a scene or a moment from your life you can pinpoint when the realities of war struck you the way it did Mamoru?

I think it was October 7th for me. It was horrifying to see the videos of people being killed and hostages being paraded.

14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?
Mamoru wanted to save his uncle, and Misaki wanted to protect her family; both were defending their loved ones, even if the methods they used were frowned upon.

No, it shouldn’t. The pressure that such expectations put on children is immense and often unhealthy. Kids should be allowed to find their own paths without being burdened by family legacies.

16. Well, this has been quite the bloody section. Takashi's last order to Mamoru, Mamoru having to order his master to leave him and his having to face all the enemy himself, Misaki desperately protecting her home, the killing of all these mighty warriors of the Sword of Kaigen...

Probably the aftermath: if Misaki and Takeru both survive, they will need to deal with what happened between them before the fight, and likely Mamoru's death (right now, it doesn’t look like he survives his encounter with the dragon killer fonyaka).

Rina | 722 comments Day 5 DQs (Chapters 17 to 21)

17. This section is deeply emotional and heart-wrenching, filled with death and suffering. The only thing that makes it bittersweet rather than purely tragic is that Mamoru finds peace and happiness in his final moments. I thought his death scene was beautifully written. Do you like how the author blends the sadness with these moments of beauty? Or would you have preferred a different approach to his death?

18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?

19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again?

20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?

Jenny | 8052 comments Day 4 DQs (Chapters 13 to 16)

Yup. During the Vietnam war, when images of that war were broadcast on the evening news. I was a kid, and it never left me.

14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?
I loved that they got to know one another better, finally. I kind of wish for both of them that they had felt good enough before that to confide in one another.

I think that family legacies can be very destructive to the children. But, that kind of legacy, the magical warrior kind like in the book, isn't really a thing. I do see families that follow each other into the military, or the police, and I don't see that as a bad thing. People often are comfortable with what they know. Children of actors becoming actors, teachers, chefs, etc.
The powerful families today are basically powerful because they can buy politicians if they want to. That is the legacy that is a huge danger right now.

16. Well, this has been quite the bloody section. Takashi's last order to Mamoru, Mamoru having to order his master to leave him and his having to face all the enemy himself, Misaki desperately protecting her home, the killing of all these mighty warriors of the Sword of Kaigen...

I have several ideas, but I think I am just going to let it pan out without guessing at this point. I hope Robin and Elleen come back into it, and I hope we find out what the hell the Emperor has been doing all this time.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments DQs Day 2
Chap 5 to 7

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?

I don't think the mountain is just a geographic location. It's symbolic of strength, endurance, and I'd say tradition. And at the very top of that mountain both literally and socially is the Matsudo family, descended from the legendary sword-wielders of Kaigen. I think the village both revere and fear them. The yakinos also have a legacy, but Misaki married into the more prestigious Matsudo line.

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?

I think there's too much tension between the Matsudos and Kotetsus for it not to explode later. I think the Kotetsus family may become either a symbol of rebellion or a beacon of hope, depending on how things unfold. I also think Mamoru might be he bridge between the two. He's brilliant, curious and loyal but he's forced into a narrow warrior mold, but I think he'll challenge that and become a new kind of leader, blending tradition and intellect. Guess we'll see.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?

I was just surprised at just how well she was able to fight Texca. She's definitely a badass warrior. When she challenge Kinoro I thought she was going to kick his butt, but she didn't so I was surprised. But the master offering (demanding) to train her was a real surprise to me that he felt she needed it. So, he being the best of the best he knows what a great warrior needs so I guess she isn't really there yet!

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?

I absolutely think they will, especially because I think Mamoru will rise as a leader.

Ch 1 to 4

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?

I had - I think I added it to my TBR at one point when I was checking out the SPFBO (Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off) nominees / winners. As this was the winner in 2019, I expect it will be pretty good. I’ve had Blood Over Bright Haven on hold at the library for a while, but The Sword of Kaigen will be my first for this author.

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
Propaganda is powerful, especially on a closed community. Without infiltrating outside influences, propaganda becomes truth, history taught to subsequent generations. Kaigen’s mix of traditionalism, honor, pure blood theory, and very few people coming into or travelling outside the community has been a potent combination.

3.) Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths I think. I like that one of the main characters in an epic fantasy is not a 20 something who just happens to master everything in 5 pages. What are you most curious about her at the moment. Also, shout out to her friends, who seem like real women-friends. Yay!
I liked how the author mixed the perceptions of Misaki and the truth-bombs from Kwang with the stunned reactions of Hyori and Mamoru. Both contribute to the reader’s understanding of just how isolationist the Kaigen community is - and how difficult it will be to open their eyes. I think there is also more to Setsuko than meets the eye.

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
I am sure. Knowing that many of the pilots of Yamma were female, and Misaki’s desire to raise strong women – the heavily patriarchal society of Kaigen will need to be cracked open just like the propaganda bubble that has enclosed its citizens while the rest of the world has evolved.

5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
It reminds me a bit of Avatar - but that is definitely not a bad thing!

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?

It's a very strange setup - this feudal way of life on the mountain with a high-technology world outside. The insular nature is not long-term sustainable, either

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?

I think that understanding how steel is made by introducing "impurities" to aid the strength will help Mamuro unlock his mixup of blood and pure ice magics to great effect

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?

I was surprised that she was allowed to join the school given she acknowledged that she'd be married off in a relatively short timeframe. But I did enjoy seeing the different attitudes

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?

Hopefully!

Well, I didn't bloody want him to die. But, I think it was a good death in the culture that he grew up in. But, I really wanted to see him grow up and become a brilliant bridge between the old and the new. Alas. I love that he achieved his (short) life's goal though.

18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?
I still think he is redeemable. I don't know why I think that, but I do. I assume it is mainly his upbringing. His brainwashing was deep.

19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again?
I think her days as a distant obedient anything are gone. She will likely have to take some good time to grieve, but I don't see her bending a knee anymore. At least there will be resistance to bending a knee.

20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?
I really hope we get to know the thought process behind keeping this certain civilization so distant from the rest of the world. I mean what is the advantage? Is it that the magic doesn't grow without isolation or something? Other places seem to have technology and magic, so that is probably not it.
I don't think they are going to help, no.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments DQ'S Day 3 Chapter 8 - Chapter 12

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interrupted?

That was a difficult scene for me to read. I most definitely think that he'd have gotten even more carried away and God knows what else he could've done in the moment. I felt like he snapped so thankfully they were interrupted. I don't care what era, culture, etc. his dad carried it way too far!

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?

I think I understand mostly but I am not 100% sure that I could explain it with confidence. I guess I'm still in the "learning" phase. I don't know which one I would but when I read that Mamoru could control blood and he got a sheet of water from the air and ran it over Kwang's leg, I thought, "Wow! That would be cool to be able to do that," so I guess I'd want that power.

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?

Oh my gosh, that scene angered me SO much! So her husband just stood over her and watched her while she read it. How intimidating and invasive!

As for whether others knew, I think it's highly unlikely that many people outside the highest levels of government or military leadership knew. Misaki's friend who sent the letter is part of a hidden network with connections to truth-suppressing forces, if I understood correctly. The fact that the Emperor is keeping it a secret suggests it's not just about military strategy; it's about control and manipulation. Even the Matsudo family, who are known for their warrior strength and loyalty to the empire, are being kept in the dark. This is a huge red flag. To me, this implies that the government is deliberately sacrificing the Kaigenese coast, possibly because it doesn't want its most loyal fighters to know in case they might resist or tell others.

I think they attack the isolated village because of its strategic location: Kaigen's coastal location gives it military significance. If an enemy controls it, they might get a fooghold on the mainland. It would also weaken the Empire from within. If the attackers destroy a loyal warrior village, they'd undermine morale, reduce the Empire's military might, and it would it would cover up corruption.

So, I think the tragedy is that the villagers are completely unprepared for the betrayal that's about to hit them.

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 696 comments DQs day 6: Chapter 22 - Chapter 26

21. Taking the dead from their families is harsh and even worse when Takeru uses his powers to stop Misaki. Do you think this was an emotional outburst from Takeru or just a controlling one? The chapter ends with Misaki almost seeming to want just any sign of emotion even if it’s painful for her.

22. The blood power described by Tsusano is pretty cool (and still Avatar coded), do you think Misaki will be able to wield it one day, or do you think like she does that she will never have the right willpower?

23. “…but when the bloody truth stared them full in the face, they were more than capable of comprehending it. They were more than capable of anger. Misaki wished she knew how to calm that anger. If she had, she would have saved herself years of pain.” Do you think that sentiment is correct, or do you believe that anger is sometimes needed in order to push action to happen?

24. Do you think Misaki’s sleeping jiya meant to hurt Takeru, or do you think it was purely coincidental? After all she’s been through, it seems like it could have been intentional, especially since she was dreaming of Mamoru at that time

25. It breaks my heart that such a dramatic confrontation was necessary to fix their marriage, but I was also cheering loudly for Misaki! How did you feel during the duel?

26. Throughout the book, I’ve hated Takeru for his cruelty toward his wife and children, and for his sexist, “I’m better than you” attitude. But these chapters made me reconsider. Yeah, he’s an ass—but maybe he’s also a victim of abuse who never got the help he needed to become better. “My brother was my shelter in all things.” That line broke my heart a little. What do you think of Takeru? Does his conversation with his wife during the duel—and his behavior toward his kids afterward—change your opinion of him?

27. Do you think the missing child holds any significance in the plot?

28. ‘I will never raise another generation as blind as my own.’ That line made me want to cheer out loud. How did you feel when you read it?

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?

It makes sense, considering both the strong traditions and their magical skills. I do wonder how important they are considered by the country as a whole. I'm guessing not very.

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsuda family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
It was good getting a better understanding of their family and the various roles. It sounds like the father-in-law was quite awful - poor Misaki.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a the real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
I loved reading about her, and her views on killing versus Robin's. I really hope we find out what happened to the group. I also liked Misaki's training - and it was neat to learn it started with her father. Sure a lot better than the family she married into!

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
This was a super sweet part. I liked how Mamoru saw a whole new side of his mother and how he didn't act like his dad and dismiss her. I also really liked how Misaki finally SAW Mamoru. And the way she taught him was so skillful.

Suzanne | 5417 comments DQ'S Day 3 Chapter 8 - Chapter 12

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interrupted?

I DO think the father would have continued to hit Mamoru. And it's sad because it was in the pretext of "teaching" but there was no teaching except how to be afraid and have no confidence. Boy I hate that man.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want? I am kind of understanding it, but I've really only seen much of what ice would do, so I'd probably choose that. It seems quite versatile. However, I liked the brief description of illusion magic - that might be a good backup choice.

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I loved that Misaki took immediate action to protect her family instead of dithering - good for her. The men seen willfully ignorant, and I hate they won't listen to her - even about things where she knows WAY more than her. But I guess they are willfully ignorant about everything.
I'd guess the attacking force must respect the powers in Kaigan and want to be rid of them.

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?

Not really. The author is new to me. The précis sounded exciting, though! Let’s see if the book delivers.

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?

Quite effective — the Emperor clearly doesn't want his people to know the reality of the outside world. All that propaganda about foreigners being hostile and weak, and about the empire being safe and at peace, might be the real reason behind many of the events in the book.

3.) Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths I think. I like that one of the main characters in an epic fantasy is not a 20 something who just happens to master everything in 5 pages. What are you most curious about her at the moment. I’m most curious about her past — and how she’ll break free from the suppression her husband and family enforce on her.

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?

YES!

Definitely different from the usual fantasy fare. The words are little hard to remember, especially in an audiobook.

DQ'S Day 3 Chapter 8 - Chapter 12

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interupted?

Yes. I despise the father and absolutely refuse to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?

Yes! And maybe the power to control the temperature around me — just to escape these awful heat waves, lol!

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?

The Emperor is a dick and has done a great job keeping everyone blind to the real situation. Outside of rumors, I doubt anyone truly knew that war was coming. Isolated? No. Border town? Yes.

Day 5 DQs (Chapters 17 to 21)

Yeah, I remember crying. I’ve really enjoyed the writing so far — it’s evoked a lot of emotions, both good and bad.

18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?

Perhaps it is his upbringing — but also, shouldn’t someone break free from their childhood at some point and make their own decisions? Especially when it’s clear that his wife resents his coldness and his children crave his love more than his harsh teaching methods?

19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again?

I don’t think Misaki will ever go back to the shell she once was.

20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?

They won’t truly help — beyond ensuring the attack stays a secret and that the Kaigens keep fighting for their emperor.

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Day 3
Chapter 8 - Chapter 12
10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interrupted?

Perhaps. Just as Mamoru lashed out at Chul-Hee when the latter exposed the bubble of inaccuracies enclosing the Kaigen society, Takeru unleashes violence on his son. For me this scene also served to show how severely people can react when confronted with a correction to a falsehood they fervently believe, and have based their identity on.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?

I am - enjoying the magic system.

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?

Her friend and her brother both warned her. If the warrior enclaves are being attacked, the enemy probably knows that they need to throw their strongest there first, rather than hit less warrior-focused points first and weaken the eventual force they take to the strong outposts.

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Day 6
Ch 22 - 26

21. Taking the dead from their families is harsh and even worse when Takeru uses his powers to stop Misaki. Do you think this was an emotional outburst from Takeru or just a controlling one? The chapter ends with Misaki almost seeming to want just any sign of emotion even if it’s painful for her.

This scene was horrible. When I was reading it, I still felt like Takeru was retreating so far from everything because he’s never been able to deal with emotional fire - the warm and the burning. Perhaps an explanation for his behavior, but not an excuse. Thank god Misaki still has Setsuko.

22. The blood power described by Tsusano is pretty cool (and still Avatar coded), do you think Misaki will be able to wield it one day, or do you think like she does that she will never have the right willpower?
Definitely. She has willpower, but hasn’t had purpose. Once she has both, she’ll be unstoppable.

Like fire, sometimes anger can be cleansing - a way to get out all the internal toxins eating you up and communicate, even if that communication comes out like a blast. I took this quote to reference more of that self-anger, or the anger she carried for so many aspects of her life that she didn’t face, or decided to martyr herself to.

24. Do you think Misaki’s sleeping jiya meant to hurt Takeru, or do you think it was purely coincidental? After all she’s been through, it seems like it could have been intentional, especially since she was dreaming of Mamoru at that time.
Every time these scenes with Mamoru happened, I just kept thinking: there are 2 people in that bed.

29. In reconnecting with Robin, Misaki realizes that she is no longer the Misaki from those days, just as he is no longer the same Robin. Do you have a story about yourself you have carried for years that is no longer true about the person you are today? Or perhaps, sense there is a self-narrative you have been carrying that you need to shed in order to grow?

32. “...a person’s tragedy doesn’t define them or cancel all the good in their life.” This quote reminds me of the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold, so the break and subsequent repair is what makes the piece beautiful and unique. What do you think about Misaki and Takeru’s newfound communication and future relationship? What about Misaki’s new self awareness?

33. One theme that jumped out at me while reading was the tension between expectations based on dreams and the acceptance/embracing of reality, with all its ugliness and beauty. Do you believe that setting expectations - parent to child, wife to husband, self to self - is a root cause of unhappiness?

33. I loved how the ending of the book left such hope for the future - not an easy future, but one with stronger relationships, better communication, and new self-acceptance. But now I want more! What will Izumo be like when he gets older? What’s the story with the creature collecting children with talents? What was your overall take on the book? Will you be reading more by this author?

Do you have a story about yourself you have carried for years that is no longer true about the person you are today? Or perhaps, sense there is a self-narrative you have been carrying that you need to shed in order to grow?

Well, definitely not like her story! I didn't have a superpower or mad skills when I was in school. There are aspects of my personality that I would like to change in order to grow, but I pretty much know who I am, good and bad.

It is about bloody time. Both for the adults being adults, and for Misaki starting to recognize her worth. I do have hope for them.

33. One theme that jumped out at me while reading was the tension between expectations based on dreams and the acceptance/embracing of reality, with all its ugliness and beauty. Do you believe that setting expectations - parent to child, wife to husband, self to self - is a root cause of unhappiness?
I think it can be cause of unhappiness for sure. Little things like negotiating who takes out the trash and who does the dishes and when homework needs to be completed are expectations that should be met. Trying to plan out someone else's life, or trying to change a person to make them fit into the mold you want is a recipe for disaster. I think this book made that clear.

34. I have no idea if there will be a sequel to this. I assume so, as the door has been left open for more story. I will read it for sure.
I had no expectations going in to this read, and I was very happily surprised.

I've been lucky enough that no, I've no such moment. But there are plenty of cultural references that built up ideas. Firstly around the Holocaust (Anne Frank, Schindler's List) and then the trenches in WW1. Blackadder's final would be a standout there.

14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?

It started shifting the weight of the book from Mamoru to Misaki.

I think people should be encouraged to do their best, but in something that fulfills them, not in service to someone else's opinion or family expectation. But there's also a need to embed persistence in the face of failure or difficulty that is harder to do.

I presume more battles, and politics with the wider empire. But it's definitely gone a different way to what I expected!

I did have that "story" for a time, but realized that it wasn't who I was anymore. I now try to only be me - what you see is what you get! I think it takes everyone a while to recognize their true self (the current one) and to accept that is who they are.

It was about time that all came about! I really liked that Takeru gave Misaki the choice on whether to invoke her claim to full combat between the two (view spoiler) I too think there is hope for them.

33. One theme that jumped out at me while reading was the tension between expectations based on dreams and the acceptance/embracing of reality, with all its ugliness and beauty. Do you believe that setting expectations - parent to child, wife to husband, self to self - is a root cause of unhappiness?
I think it can be a cause for unhappiness. Especially if they are unwilling to talk about those expectations when they are no longer valid or are impossible to meet. The acceptance and embracing of reality as a whole (all involved) is key.

I agree, I liked the ending and also want more. I even went so far as to google it. As of now there is no expectation of a sequel to this one. I hope that changes; I would really like to have another set in this world with these characters! I would read more by this author.

Stephie | 206 comments DQs: Day 1, Chapter 1 to 4

1. Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?

I have previous read this when it had its first round of popularity a few years ago. I expect to be emotionally wrung out once again.

2. How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?

The author does an excellent job of conveying the isolation of Kaigen. They are essentially cut off from the more modern world and due to this lack of communication with the rest of the world, the Emperor is able to better control them and keep them stuck in warrior culture.

3. Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths I think. I like that one of the main characters in an epic fantasy is not a 20 something who just happens to master everything in 5 pages. What are you most curious about her at the moment. Also, shout out to her friends, who seem like real women-friends. Yay!

I love Misaki. I laugh a little every time she has to catch herself before exposing her past. I hate that she had to be cut off to become nothing but a baby factory for the Matsuda family. She could be so much more! I also love her friends. It is refreshing to read about their relationships with one another.

4. Takeru (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?

Seeing her tiny cracks in her demeanor I can see this happening.

5. What do you think of the magic system so far?

I love it. Although the Whispering Blade sounds terrifying!

DQs: Day 2, Chapters 5 to 7

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?

It seems it works well and everyone has a respect for each other’s positions.

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?

I love their relationship. Their weapons will definitely prove important.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?

I was just saddened when she basically says none of it will matter because she will still be married off to produce children and be a housewife. She could be so much more!

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?

It really was. I love their connection and there seems to be a lot of Misaki in Mamoru. He is not as cold and seemingly unfeeling as his father’s icy demeanor.

DQ's: Day 3 Chapters 8 to 12

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interrupted?

I would hope not. I believe in open conversation. Takeru just shuts everything down as nonsense and doesn’t want to open his icy mind. I felt bad for poor Mamoru.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred? Which power would you want?

I definitely understand it more. Some of the things they can do is scary. I would love to create ice shields for protection.

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?

Takashi mentions that he loves having a daughter because they are for peace times. Takeru tells Mamoru his mother is talking nonsense. So, no. I think that they are very isolated and due to their status as warriors and the Sword of Kaigen they trust the Emperor because that is how it always has been.

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
I had never heard of it! High fantasy is hit or miss for me, but no real expectations

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
I thought it was very effective. I think once you're already isolated, it's hard to break past that.

3.) Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths I think. I like that one of the main characters in an epic fantasy is not a 20 something who just happens to master everything in 5 pages. What are you most curious about her at the moment. She doesn't really seem happy but seems to be putting on a front. I want to see how that changes

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
Oh definitely, I think it'll be full of girl power

5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
Very Avatar the Last Airbender. I like it

Qs Day 2
Chap 5 to 7

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
Definitely was a great amount of worldbuilding. It made sense for the world we're in

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
I do think it'll play an important role since there is a sword on the cover and a lot of training for fighting.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
I think it made who she is now shocking. We open up with her really being one of the village mothers, it doesn't fit with her badass persona

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
Oh for sure.

DQs day 6: Chapter 22 - Chapter 26
21. Taking the dead from their families is harsh and even worse when Takeru uses his powers to stop Misaki. Do you think this was an emotional outburst from Takeru or just a controlling one? The chapter ends with Misaki almost seeming to want just any sign of emotion even if it’s painful for her.
I think it was probably both. I think he doesn't know why he does most things

22. The blood power described by Tsusano is pretty cool (and still Avatar coded), do you think Misaki will be able to wield it one day, or do you think like she does that she will never have the right willpower?
Oh, absolutely. I think it'll probably be to save her family

Sometimes anger can be the driving force, but you should probably actually do what needs to be done when you're not angry.

24. Do you think Misaki’s sleeping jiya meant to hurt Takeru, or do you think it was purely coincidental? After all she’s been through, it seems like it could have been intentional, especially since she was dreaming of Mamoru at that time
I think it was intentional. Not by her, buy by her jiya.

For sure, he is not a very nice man.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?

I do think it is becoming clearer. I do want to know more!

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?

I have not, and I have not heard of the author. Slightly trepidition in my expectations as this isn't my typical type of book I read and enjoy.

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?

Very effective to show they are cut off and most brainwashed/manipulated to a great degree with pride in their eyes. I feel like after chapter two for the two - who I am assuming will be main characters - is the point of the foreshadowing and build-up.

3.) Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths I think. I like that one of the main characters in an epic fantasy is not a 20 something who just happens to master everything in 5 pages. What are you most curious about her at the moment. I liked her friends and bonding including the little debate and backstories. Not sure what focus she'll have but think she'll be a main character. I like her so far and get her trapped feeling like she is a tool in the household and that her sons due to destiny and being claimed by the men do not really belong to her.

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?

I don't understand it yet at all.

DQs Day 2
Chap 5 to 7

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?

Rulers tend to be the most powerful so it makes sense that someone who can kill you with an ice spear stronger than metal would be a ruling family. It's a familiar set up in non-democratic societies. And if we were truly honest in most democratic ones too.

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
I think so, Mamoru made need somewhere same to run to if he ends up having a dramatic falling out with his father. Which is certainly possible at this point. It also gives him perspectives into other ways to live other than how his family functions.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
It really makes me wonder how she ended up married to Tekure and why he agreed to marry her having lived off island. Seems like an odd pairing. I'm wondering where her family is and if they are even still alive. Also, if they were traditional enough for the arranged marriage to the ruling family, blah blah, why send her off island for training at all? Clearly there is more to this story.

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
I hope so. At the very least I hope Mamoru learns who is mother truly is and not just who Tekure and her FIL allowed her to become in that household.

I read her other book before reading this. This is also a reread for me so I know what I'm getting into again *cry emoji*

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
Am trying to remember my first impression when I first read this and I think the author did well because the utter confidence they have for their skills can only be brought on by what was told them, no interference from any one else.

3.) Misaki is an interesting character with a lot of repressed or hidden depths I think. This was what I loved about this book at the get go. We have an adult woman finally as a main character. And one with many real life challenges at that! Juggling motherhood and the dreams and skill set she knows she has.

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
Same thoughts and I should skip answering the next question.

Interesting! It's been quite some time where I get fun magic systems like this! If this made it into reels, it would look so pretty! (I remember though when I was reading this the first time, it took a while for me to get a firmer grasp on things).

DQs Day 1
Ch 1 to 4

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?

Nope. Never heard of it or the author.

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?

It’s pretty obvious that they are the North Korea of this empire. But it’s weird that people like Misaki who have seen otherwise don’t attempt to affect change. Or, at the very least, talk about their experiences.

Yay!

I love Setsko. I’m not so sure about Misaki. I would like to know how she could go from having opportunities and something close to equality and give it up for a life of subservient misery.

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?

I’m not an apologist for the crappy misogynist system of Kaigen, but how could I dislike Tekure more than someone like Misaki or her parents? Change has to start somewhere and who is more likely to be the one to do that? Setsko obviously, but it will be almost anyone before it is Tekure. So as much as I dislike the system, I can’t wholly dislike Tekure.

5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?

It took me a little to get into this book. Lots of terms, lots of characters and much of it similar sounding. But once I got used to them and the fun magic began (on the roof esp) I started to get into it.

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?

Honestly, I don’t think much about it. Is that weird? It’s a feudal system of sorts. I guess I just take it at face value.

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?

Yes, I think they will. The story the grandmother told was interesting. It was all about learning and blending and accepting a certain level of change. I think it wil be the blending of the families traditions and skills. How? I’m not sure.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?

I sort of mentioned this in day 1, but I’m surprised how Misaki could give up freedom to become a pathetic subservient vessel for childbearing. She doesn’t even get the joy of being a mother. It’s infuriating.

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?

Definitely. I hope so anyway. Cos her apologies and submission is 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 She will only be able to redeem herself in my eyes by kicking butt.

Ch 1 to 4

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?

I had never heard of this book/author and had no expectations going in.

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
The isolation was clearly communicated and it got even more clear as the book went on.

Yay!
I loved Misaki and was like woah she's a great character to have a POV for!

4.) Takeru (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
I had this feeling that he would be formidable and not super great... but I also didn't hate him. I'm not sure what I thought Misaki would do to be honest. She was so meek at this point.

5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
Honestly I didn't understand it at this point.. I still sort of don't...

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudas and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?

It's definitely an interesting set up, and there's gotta be a reason. The power and authority with the magic abilities seems to go a long way to earn respect.

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
I definitely thought it would come more into play in the future.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
I remember being really intrigued and wanting to see more of the rest of what she learned while training. I thought everything she did was believable.

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
I was intrigued at how Misaki handled that first conversation. I did not think of them fighting as warriors together at this point. I really had no idea what was coming.

Chapter 8 - Chapter 12

10. Mamoru is becoming more friends with Kwang Chul-Hee and seems to be rebelling more and finally has a fall out with his father. Do you think his father would have hit Mamoru again if Misaki wouldn't have accidentally interrupted?

I definitely think Takeru may have. I think some kernel of his mind knew that Mamoru may have a point but he wasn't ready to face it so he threw himself into his culture.

11. Are you understanding their powers and magic system more through these last few chapters and the fighting that has occurred. Which power would you want?
A little bit better I think. At this point I went to review the glossary so I sort of understood that some people had water magic and some had fire...

12. Misaki received a letter from her friend and told her to run and get out of town. With the Emperor keeping it a secret. Do you think anyone else knew war was coming? And why they are attacking such an isolated village?
I really had no guesses at this point and the reason that was revealed later on was sort of a shock to me. But I definitely think no one had any idea.

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1414 comments Day 4 DQs (Chapters 13 to 16)

13. There are multiple references to the snow and the mountain turning red. Scenes like this are for me a stark reminder of the brutality and bloodiness of war, rather than the romanticized glory of protection.

Is there a scene or a moment from your life you can pinpoint when the realities of war struck you the way it did Mamoru?

Not war, but I've seen blackened fields after wildfires and the widespread damage was hard to take in.

14. Misaki revealed herself as a fighter, and Mamoru revealed his abilities in blood manipulation to his uncle that he learnt from his mother. As the reader, how did you feel when these moments came about in quick succession in relation to Misaki?

It was easy to make the connection, and him learning this from Misakki made me wonder if that was why he hadn't mastered the whispering blade earlier. But his ending scene sort of confused me a little bit.

I think the idea of doing your absolute best and working with all your heart is beautiful concept, because through it we have things like the Olympics and championships because these athletes or competitors who are amazing and talented and hard working have a place to showcase their work. But I don't think the reason behind it should be for the glory of their families. However, I'm an American so I know I have a more individualist mindset.

I really didn't know what would happen next but this whole scene was pretty captivating. I was definitely shocked at what happened to Mamoru, I haven't read a book where a POV from an MC just ends during the book.

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1414 comments Day 5 DQs (Chapters 17 to 21)

Absolutely beautifully written. I have not ever read a book where an MC with a POV is killed off before the ending so this was new for me. But I was way more intrigued with Misaki as a character so I was able to transition to supporting her, although I hated that no one knew he wielded a whispering blade. I thought Wang handled his death really really well considering everything in the story so far.

18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?
I remember thinking constantly "there's GOT to be a reason for him to be like. This is NOT the end of the explanation of Takeru..." I just had this strong feeling.

19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again?
I don't think there's a chance of her being distant or passive after losing Mamoru, but I could potentially see her trying to bottle up her warrior ways and put them to the side again if the village is repaired.

20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?
Yes I definitely did. I figured he had a point with how the author has portrayed the empire so far.

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1414 comments DQs day 6: Chapter 22 - Chapter 26

21. Taking the dead from their families is harsh and even worse when Takeru uses his powers to stop Misaki. Do you think this was an emotional outburst from Takeru or just a controlling one? The chapter ends with Misaki almost seeming to want just any sign of emotion even if it’s painful for her.

It's hard to answer this because I've already read ahead. But you could see her anger and her passion and frustration with his lack of emotion or involvement, and just laying down and being walked over by the Empire. I felt like he had a reason for leaving and being absent after this but I wasn't sure what.

22. The blood power described by Tsusano is pretty cool (and still Avatar coded), do you think Misaki will be able to wield it one day, or do you think like she does that she will never have the right willpower?
I've read ahead so I'll be silent on this part.

That's a really good point for debate and I'm not sure what side I land on.

24. Do you think Misaki’s sleeping jiya meant to hurt Takeru, or do you think it was purely coincidental? After all she’s been through, it seems like it could have been intentional, especially since she was dreaming of Mamoru at that time.
No I think she definitely didn't mean to hurt Takeru.

Day 7
DQs Chapters 27-29
25. It breaks my heart that such a dramatic confrontation was necessary to fix their marriage, but I was also cheering loudly for Misaki! How did you feel during the duel?

Okay this was in my opinion the BEST part of the WHOLE book and what made the book worth reading to me. It demonstrated reconciliation and meeting each others needs through a very different lens and way of doing so than I could ever conceive. It was fascinating. I had tears in my eyes most of this section.

I KNEW there was a reason he was the way he was! I KNEW there was more to him! I hadn't hated him I was just waiting to see what the explanation would be. My heart was broken for him.

27. Do you think the missing child holds any significance in the plot?
Yep, Especially since she was just GONE.

28. ‘I will never raise another generation as blind as my own.’ That line made me want to cheer out loud. How did you feel when you read it?
I felt his conviction and thought it was really powerful.

Ch 30 - end

I definitely think I've changed but I haven't thought about exactly how and which changes are good and desirable and which ones aren't but this is a great question.

I LOVE how Misaki grew and how the marriage between them grew and got stronger in this book. This makes the whole book worth reading in my opinion.

33. One theme that jumped out at me while reading was the tension between expectations based on dreams and the acceptance/embracing of reality, with all its ugliness and beauty. Do you believe that setting expectations - parent to child, wife to husband, self to self - is a root cause of unhappiness?
hmmmm, no I wouldn't necessarily say that but how it's handled if expectations aren't met is EXTREMELY important.

Well, I read the blog post the author linked to - the author shared that she discontinued the series and the whole Theonite universe because she wasn't able to fit all of the pieces together cohesively. So I'm happy to let it be a stand a lone and not need more, and just focus on this story in and of itself. But she had beautiful writing and is an intriguing author; I'm open to coming back to more of her stuff at a later date.

Do you like how the author blends the sadness with these moments of beauty? Or would you have preferred a different approach to his death?
The reread doesn't make it less painful. I was still crying like crazy! I never expected him to die honestly, or like if he did it would be towards the end of the book.

18. Takeru seems almost devoid of emotion. Could this be a result of his upbringing, where emotional restraint was expected of him? Do you believe his character is redeemable at this point or has he reached a point of no return?
Honestly, I blamed him for everything. I couldn't understand why he just couldn't be a father and husband when he seems to be a very talented man.

19. At one point, Hiroshi realizes that he is now the heir and Misaki sees fear in his eyes. Do you think Misaki will help him cope with the pressure or will she fall back into a passive, dutiful role, becoming a distant mother again?
I put a lot of hope that Misaki would become a more hands on mother after the death of her firstborn. All that regret being hshaped into purpose.

20. What do you think happens after the imperial forces arrive? Do you agree with Tae-min’s prediction that the empire won’t actually help?
Definitely. The Empires feels like the state of our current governements these days, pretty much uninterested in the welfare of its people and working on their own selfish agenda.

25. It breaks my heart that such a dramatic confrontation was necessary to fix their marriage, but I was also cheering loudly for Misaki! How did you feel during the duel?
I felt relieved that finally they can work together! And am glad that they agreed on a partnership.

26. Throughout the book, I’ve hated Takeru for his cruelty toward his wife and children, and for his sexist, “I’m better than you” attitude. But these chapters made me reconsider. It did a little but also I can't help but ask why he kept trying for kids again just right after the two miscarriages. But then going off his character of always just doing his duty, I guese it was still in line with his character.

27. Do you think the missing child holds any significance in the plot?
Yes.

28. ‘I will never raise another generation as blind as my own.’ That line made me want to cheer out loud. How did you feel when you read it?
Vindicated! There's hope for this guy yet! A redeeming arc ;)

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?
Nope, never heard of it before or read anything by this author. I'm trying not to have expectations because this is completely out of my normal reading wheel house.

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?
I think it's pretty evident that they are secluded since the other students haven't traveled and no one seems to know anything about the outside world. Through propaganda and control. The adults teach the children the "correct" version.

Yay!
I like her and her friends so far. They have been the best part for me. I'm trying to get into the rest of the book but really struggling. I hope we find out why she married Tekure.

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?
100%

5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?
There has been very little of it so far.

6. What do you think about the hierarchy of the villages and the Matsudos and Yukinos being the "rulers" of the mountain?
It gives the story a backbone. I've felt from the beginning that this book feels both historical and futuristic at the same time and having this adds to those qualities.

7. We get to know the history of the relationship between the Matsudos and the Kotetsus. Do you think this relationship / the Kotetsu family will play an important role later on in the story? If so, how?
100% because why else give the history of their relationship. They're going to blend/help one another out somehow later.

8. In chapter 6, we find out that Misaki was a real badass in her past. Was there anything that stuck out to you when getting to know her backstory? Something interesting, shocking, odd?
Just the fact that she went away to school and was such a fantastic fighter. I think this is going to come back later in the book. I also wonder about Robin. I also wonder why she didn't put her foot down about her marriage.

9. The conversation between Misaki and Mamoru was heartwarming. Do you think we will see both of them side by side as warriors by the end of the book?
Definitely or least I'm hoping we will!

1.) Had you heard of this book before it was nominated for/was selected to be a BOM this month? Or read other books by the author? Any expectations going in?

I have not heard of this book before it was nominated. I own another book by this author but I haven't read it yet. This is my first time reading this author. I am a bit intimidated by this book. The long list of character and word definitions scares me a bit.

2.) How effective is the author at conveying the isolationist nature of Kaigen? And at the glimpses of what the rest of the world is really like? How do you think the Emperor has managed to do this so effectively?

I think once Kwang enters the picture, the reader gets a much more clear picture of how isolated Kaigen is. I think the Emperor is only allowing them to see what he wants them to do. The people stay self contained for the most part so they would not be aware of how the outside world truly is.

Yay!

I think she is very interesting as well. I think she has a lot of things spinning in her brain that she keeps to herself. The scenes between her and the other women in the house provide us with some idea of who she really is.

4.) Tekure (husband/father) has managed to make me hate him without even popping up on page yet. Go him. Do you think we'll get a scene where Misaki does her version of 'down with the patriarchy' before the end of the book?

Absolutely. I feel bad for Misaki and I want to know how she ended up with Tenure.

5.) What do you think of the magic system so far?

I'm very interested in how it works. When the boys end up falling and magic is used to save them, I was pretty fascinated by how it works. I'm excited to read about other instances where magic comes into play and learn more about it.
