Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) | 125 comments I'll try to add mine to the bookshelves today!

Thanks Jen.

PS I first thought threads then I realized there was no easy way to avoid repeats and if this is suppossed to be a reference library who needs repeats.

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) | 125 comments Jen,

I added a spanish-rolalty to the threads.

I also added nonfiction so we could point out that it is nonfiction.

I'm really excited because I think it will be great as a resource. I would like to see the members put in what they've read, own, or have heard is worth reading.

Thanks for being supportive!

I started this book. So far is pretty good. My copy is an ARC so not sure how different the final draft is. The book is a tiny but disjointed to me but interesting. The story is told as rememberances from Eve and also bits told by her daughters. So it goes back and forth a little. Eve is very old when recounting things so sometimes she is around the same time the girls are talking about and others she is remembering Eden and so on. I think overall will be really good.

I used the first part of my birthday money and put in an order at Amazon today for The Queen's Mistake and The White Queen (pre-order of Trade Paperback version). My library doesn't have the first, and the line is way to long on the second.

Susan - let me know how you like The Murder of King Tut. It looks interesting, so I may have to check it out.

Yay!!! I found a new secondhand bookstore and called them to see if they had The Sunne in Splendour. Most of my bookstores around here have never heard of SKP but we got talking and he's holding three others for me. Can't wait to go and pick them up!

Helen of Troy Margaret George
The Queen's Lady Barbara Kyle
The Champion Elizabeth Chadwick

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) | 125 comments If you are in the US there's a buying bookclub called BOMC2. You pay a fee of 9.95 a month regardless of whether you pick a book, but if you do that's all you're charged. Any book from them is 9.95 and they are hardbacks, that's where I got Gregory's book. They carry most new bestsellers. I also bought New York by Rutherfurd, and Dan Brown's new book. You keep a running list and each month they send you your top pick. No shipping and handling but no returns.

Hey all - I just found out the bookcloseouts.com is having a huge 1/2 off sale this weekend, that lasts until 12/1. I just went to their website and ordered

Here be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman
Mistress of the Sun A Novel by Sandra Gulland
The Winter King A Novel of Arthur by Bernard Cornwell
The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory
Falls the Shadow by Sharon Kay Penman
The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman

Most were 2.99, a few were even cheaper!! The only thing is that they only have limited numbers and certain titles, but it is worth a look!!

And then my sister lent me:

Taliesin
Merlin
Pendragon
Arthur
all by Stephen R. Lawhead

Looks like I have lots of reading to do. Thanks goodness for birthday money.

I found a couple last night and put them on hold at my favorite secondhand bookstore:

Labyrinth Kate Moss
The Sixth Wife Suzannah Dunn
New Worlds, Lost Worlds The Rule of the Tudors, 1485-1603 Susan Brigden
Cupid and the King Five Royal Paramours Princess Michael of Kent
An Echo in the Bone Diana Gabaldon (I own a signed copy of this but need a 'reading' copy!)

I've been telling people who ask that if they're looking for gift ideas for me for Christmas, that's the spot to go. Mom asked me why she would do that and then have me know what I'm getting. Makes much more sense to me that way.... how could anyone possibly get me a book that I would not only want to read but not already own? If I want a book, I'm usually not very good at leaving it sitting on someone else's shelf!

message 84: by Susan C (new)

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) | 125 comments I absolutely love book gift cards. No one can buy a book for you unless you have a list for them.

I agree. We all have amazon wish lists in my family, which helps even if you end up buying form someplace other than Amazon. Most people just gave me either money or book gift cards for my recent birthday, and I had a great time picking out books.

Looks like you have a great second hand bookstore. I have one near me too. They know me in there I visit so often.
I have read the 6th wifeone by Dunn. I read 2 otehrs of hers as well. They for me were just ok. For some reason hers leave me wanting more. Kinda I guess would be for me just not 'enough meat'. If that makes sense. This of the 3 I read was the better of them though.

Recently I got some more books....big surprise.

I got these from little over a week ago to a couple days ago....
The Queens Handmaiden by Jennifer Ashley. Have already read it. Was a very fast read and I really liked it. More of a light historical read but seems to not stray from actual events. One thing I loved was that the main gal is Elizabeths Seamstress and she is always describing the clothing and fabric in detail.

The Heavens Before by Kacy Barnett-Gramckow. Just finished this one too. It is a 1st of a trilogy called The Genesis Trilogy. This one focuses on the Great Flood. Told from the view of the girl that becomes Shems wife / Noahs daughter in law. Interesting views on how life was at that time.

He Who Lifts The Skies also by Barnett-Gramckow. This is the 2nd in the series and says is about the Tower of Babel time period.
Signora da Vinci by Robin Maxwell
The Heretic Queen by Michelle Moran
Dreamers and Brothers both by Angela Hunt They are the first 2 in a series that starts around the time of Joseph after he ends up in Egypt.
Sisters of Henry VIII by Maria Perry
Honor in the Dust by Gilbert Morris around the time of Henry VIII but focuses on the religious reform with Tyndale.

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) | 125 comments I just bought the Queen Victoria series by Plaidy. I also recently bought The Queen's Mistake,(Haeger) The Time of Singing(Chadwick) and Her Mother's Daughter (Lee).

Arrows new covers of Plaidy's books are absolutely beautiful. I'm finding myself replacing the books I own with old covers with the new covers. They look wonderful on my shelves.

I haven't posted here in a while, as far as the books I've gotten, but I finally spent all of my birthday money, and here are the Royalty related books I got:

Joan of Arc by Mark Twain
The Queen's Mistake In the Court of Henry VIII by Diane Haeger
The Sunne In Splendour A Novel of Richard III
Here Be Dragons AND
Falls the Shadow by Sharon Kay Penman
Mistress of the Sun A Novel by Sandra Gulland
The Winter King A Novel of Arthur by Bernard Cornwell
The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory
Lion of Ireland by Morgan Llywelyn

Plus I pre-ordered in Trade Paperback

The White Queen by Philippa Gregory

And I got The Princes in the Tower by Alison Weir from bookswap.com

Plus I got about 5 other non Royalty related books. It was soooo much fun spending this money, and the half price sale at bookcloseouts.com came right at the correct time!

I love Cleo but I need to start reading some of the great HF and HNF books on my shelfs. The downside to reading a humungous book.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share my recently two new books. I'm fascinated about ancient history and was interested about the Holy Wars and The Crusades.

Given the current events with Europe and the United States involved in two wars in Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Its ironic and have often wondered as a soldier how this current war is in anyway related to the crusades. Therefore, I wanted to educate and learn more of the Arabs and Muslims of past wars history.

So I bought two books. I'm sure there are others but I selected these two to read.
The New Concise History of the Crusades (Critical Issues in History) by Thomas F. Madden
This book is excellent easy simple to read.

Arab Historians of the Crusades (Islamic World) by Francesco Gabrieli
This book offers the perspective view of the Arabs/Muslims view of the crusades.Excellent!

Please...I look forward to talking to everyone on the Crusades Group for comments and Questions!

Merry Christmas to All!

Reggie
