I am a card-carrying fan of Mick Herron's Slow Horses series, and the latest instalment, Clown Town, is terrific! He's such a good writer. This one has real spies, failed spies, and blackmailing pensioner spies.

I typically don't read books labeled as horror. While I read a lot of horror in the past, I find the older I get the less appealing the genre is to me. After reading this one, I've come to wonder if a lot of books are mislabeled horror simply because of one or two kill scenes that are a little gruesome. I don't believe that is enough to label a story as horror. JMHO Anyway, this one has given the horror label a little bit more interest for me because it is a crime thriller.

An odd, very short read is the story Aghwee The Sky Monster by Japanese writer Kenzaburō Ōe. His bio on GR says in 1994, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for creating "an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today."Of course I read the English translation, but I assume it is every bit as intriguing and quirky in Japanese.

Another quirky one is Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. This feisty little Chinese lady gathers an eclectic group in San Francisco to help her find a murderer. Fun read and great audio.

For my Halloween reading binge, I thought I would read a horror/crime thriller story. On the Donne horror scale of 1-5, five being horror-filled, I’d definitely rate this one a 3-3.5, which, for the most part, was just fine for me.

So far, I've enjoyed everything I've read by Aussie author Michael Robotham. For many years, he was a journalist in London, a place he knows well, where The White Crow is set. I like the premise of the daughter of a gangster being a young detective. Of course, Philomena's always suspected by both sides of leaking information, but Robotham makes it work.
