Ms Tr1sha, may I embrace the Feb challenge with my own interpretation?

It was during my university years, that I was introduced to the writings of Virginia Woolf. Thus, assisting my quest on that discovery of who I am.

In her novel, "Mrs. Dalloway", Septimus is a shell-shocked WW I vet, unable to cope with his reintegration into society. He will literally give his life, so that others may be awakened to the heaviness of his condition (such as the doctor, who dismissed Septimus' post traumatic depression as trivial).

So too, would V.W. terminate her life, willfully... So that others may benefit from a better understanding of that darkness from their depression (such as myself)?

Anyways, her novel, "Orlando", which I've been meaning to read for years. But, well, you know...

So, a very special thank you to Ms. Tr1sha. This challenge has stoked the inspiration to open that gift bestowed upon me years ago, and finally read "Orlando"... Yes, I have begun it, this very evening.

I need some help with this challenge. I know which one I'll probably read for nr 1 but I have no clue about what to read for prompt 2.

Since I have some pretty large (heavy, long ... what on earth do you call the opposite of short books and how can I suddenly forget?)
... books to read for other challenges this month (that are not old enough to suit this challenge) I'd love to get some good suggestions of very short classic stories or children's books. Thank you (⁠人⁠ ⁠•͈⁠ᴗ⁠•͈⁠)

Don’t worry! You could read for just one of the prompts if you want. Also, prompt 2 could include being kind to animals instead of people. I suggest you look at some of the traditional Christmas short stories. You might like

No worry! Thank you. Beatrix Potter's stories are well known here in Sweden - at least a few of them but I just remember that human beings are evil to the small rabbits. Maybe I remember wrong.

Today I'm chocked because of the horrible events that took place here yesterday. There was a mass shooting with eleven deaths in a minor city and it's the worst mass shooting in Sweden ever.

I'm probably more distressed by this than I understand because in a way it's so unreal. I know that you all who live in US have more experiences from this kind of horrible events and the violence in Sweden has reached extreme numbers lately but this is over the top.

So yes, I'd love to read about kindness!

Well now, I just read The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and there was no kindness what so ever! The Squirrel - a charmingly naughty little fellow which in my opinion needs some friendly attention - goes to far in the end and kicks the old owl in the face (!) and the owl captures him and breaks his tail!

What an awkward ending! That does not fit prompt 2 at all!

But I liked the mischievous little hooligan, he just needed some love and attention.

That’s disappointing, Nike. I’ll definitely stay with my choice of The Tailor of Gloucester.

  Today (Feb 17) is Random Acts of Kindness Day (I learned this from Jazzy and Tr1sha)... Hey, sometimes we get so caught up in the details of our lives, we may neglect the existence of others.

     What distinguishes humans from other organisms? Consciousness? Intelligence? Love?... Well, from my standpoint, that quality is empathy. I shall define empathy as viewing a circumstance from another's perspective... Literature allows us to expand that empathy, so we may experience another's race, culture, etc... We can experience war, depression, etc, obviously not to the same degree as actual experience, but we can vicariously feel what it is to be another... Which writers/works have profoundly expanded your empathy, people you may have misjudged, or known little about? How so?

     It's easy to identify with like-minded people. So, on this Random Acts of Kindness day, may we delve into a book, unlike myself (or two, three, or however many I can possibly peruse). A book, not bound by those melodious rhythms of a printed author. Perhaps, instead, standing in the line at the grocery store, an elderly gent, lonely, afraid. May we lend our attention, our full attention, to such loneliness and fear, truly listening to his ramblings, however disgraceful to our accustomed eloquence of pages, sacrificing those few moments of silence from the kids, even my husband, and those damn chatterings from work... But, a moment, a solitary moment, seemingly a lifetime, delving into that work, as though those strokings onto his canvas, were a portrait of me... Why?... An empathetic gifting, unnecessary, a receipt in return, because I'm alive... Yes, I am alive!!
