PattyMacDotComma | 928 comments Peter Carey is an interesting, award-winning (lots of awards) Aussie author who lives in New York but writes about his homeland. I'm a fan.

I have wanted to read Oscar and Lucinda for years because it sounded great - historical fiction, a pair of odd-bods, and a wild plot. Plus it won the 1988 Booker Prize and the 1989 Miles Franklin (Australia's most prestigious literary award), and I'm trying to read some awarded books. I'm happy I've done so, though this isn't my favourite Carey.

PattyMacDotComma | 928 comments On the other hand, I read A River Runs Through It and Other Stories by Norman Maclean and completely understand why it is often referred to as an American classic despite not winning a bunch of awards. Just stunning, and the lengthy foreword by Annie Proulx for the 25th anniversary edition is excellent.

I had never read any of C. J. Box's books. I just started his first, "Open Season." I haven't finished yet, but so far I like it. I also enjoy the character and the setting. I will likely read more of his; however, I will read the Joe Pickett series in order.

Magic Men/Brighton Mysteries #7. It's 1966 in Brighton, England, and someone is killing magician's assistants. So the Brighton cops are on the case and so is Sam and Emma's Detective Agency and so is the great Max Mephisto. I like this series and this might be the best yet. James Best (jamesbest) | 302 comments Now starting MIDNIGHT IN EUROPE (2014) by Alan Furst, the eleventh novel in his long running "Night Soldiers" WWII spy thriller series set between 1933 - 1943.

Only two books left in the series for me to track down, as Furst has not published since 2019. I can only hope that he has retired and is relaxing in Paris, where many of his plotlines intersect.

PattyMacDotComma | 928 comments An odd, very short read is the story Aghwee The Sky Monster by Japanese writer Kenzaburō Ōe. His bio on GR says in 1994, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for creating "an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today."

Of course I read the English translation, but I assume it is every bit as intriguing and quirky in Japanese.
