2024 November Pick-It-For-Me Challenge

Pickees
✳️ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✳️ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.
Pickers
✳️ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.
✳️ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.
✳️ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.
A few hints to help with book selection:
✳️ Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
✳️ Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
✳️ Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
✳️ Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✳️ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
✳️ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.
If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✳️ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

Picks will be posted by 7am (US ET) October 26
Please pick for the person below you in your group. The last person in the group will pick for the first person. For example: ☘KathyD☘ picks for Nancy H and HeatherMarie picks for ☘KathyD☘.
Picks are due end of the day October 30 (that is, midnight US ET)
✔️ = made picks
✔️☘KathyD☘ - tbr-audios
✔️Nancy H - to-read
✔️Jamie - open series
✔️Carmen TBT - 2024 picks
✔️LaurLa - 10-last-chance-picklist

Remember to pick a minimum of four NEW books and four from your pickee's TBR or preferred shelf. Please limit your picks to no more than two new to your pickee and two from their preferred shelf (or TBR) for each rule, since sometimes too many choices can be as bad as too few!

🦃🥧🍠🦃🥧🍠🦃🥧🍠🦃🥧🍠🦃🥧🍠🦃🥧🍠
It's that wonderful, yummy time of year again! November typically kicks-off many traditional and festive holidays around the world, many of which feature or focus on traditional foods. Hope you enjoy the picking treats below!
Turkey, stuffed or not
Thanksgiving is mostly an American and Canadian holiday but many cultures around the world have holidays focused on being thankful or grateful for blessings. In America, the traditional meal includes turkey, whether you like it stuffed or not, usually roasted but sometimes deep fried too!
Recommend a book:
🦃with something with wings on the cover (could be a bird or a plane!)
🦃with a double letter in the title (for 'gobble gobble,' says the turkey)
🦃that you think is a 'turkey' of a book: you didn't like it or has a GR average rating of 3.5 or below
Ham
Ham is featured in many holiday meals this time of year: some like it for Thanksgiving (instead of or along with turkey), Christmas day, and New Years Day.
Recommend a book:
🐖with the letters HAM in the title and/or author's name, any order
🐖with something pink on the cover (because pigs are pink, right?)
🐖that made you squeal with delight because you loved it or you're excited to read it
Potatoes
My family requires two types of potatoes for both Thanksgiving and Christmas: mashed potatoes and candied sweet potatoes (or yams). Lots of families prefer scalloped potatoes or even baked potatoes!
Recommend a book:
🥔that has a mostly beige, cream or light yellow cover (you know, like a potato's color)
🍠that you think is sweet or has a sweet character (because sweet potatoes)
🥔that has at least 2 format editions on GR (ebook, paperback, audio, etc)
Cranberry 'sauce'
I'm not sure why it's called a sauce - it's more like a relish or a jam or jelly (from a can?). My experience is you either love it or hate it! I happen to love it as long as it's not the canned jelly type.
Recommend a book:
🍒with a 'saucy' character, your interpretation
🍒with lots of red or pink on the cover
🍒where the author's initials are found in CRANBERRY
(yes, I know the emoji here is cherries but it was as close as they had!)
Pies, pies and more pies
Again, my family requires 2 types of pies: Sweet potato pie and Kentucky Derby pie (pecan pie with chocolate chips and bourbon). Do they sound spoiled or what? Other seasonal favorites are pumpkin, apple and sugar pie.
Recommend a book:
🥧with a round object on the cover
🥧that features a baker or chef or is set in the food industry
🥧with a one word title
Cookies
So many cookies this time of year, so little time to eat them all! Everything from simple sugar cookies to traditional gingerbread, linzar, macaroons or even holiday biscotti. Do you have a cookie specialty? Our family does a family decorating day with sugar cookies. The fun is being together and the decorating... no fancy baking for this one.
Recommend a book:
🍪that has a highly decorated cover, your interpretation
🍪that is a historical or tagged historical, history or similar (because cookies go waaaaay back)
🍪that is set during any holiday, is tagged holiday or with any specific holiday tag
Latkes
More potatoes but these are a tradition during the holidays in Israel: a yummy potato pancake fried golden and crispy. Sounds better than boring old mashed potatoes to me!
Recommend a book:
🥮that is international to you, the picker: is set in a country you do not live in
🥮with a golden cover or something golden on the cover
🥮with a title that starts with an L for Latkes or an I for Israel
Minced Pie
While Americans are roasting turkeys or preparing a baked ham at Christmas time, the British are creating minced pies filled with all manor of savory fillings and fruits.
Recommend a book:
🥧that features dancing of any sort (because you mince when you dance?) or someone who appears to be dancing/mincing on the cover
🥧with a knife or other sharp object on the cover (because the other type of mince you do with a knife)
🥧that you think your pickee will savor, could be because it has a high GR rating or you just loved it
BONUS: Stuffing (or dressing)
A surprise 'write-in' vote goes to stuffing, or dressing if you are being technical since most agree that stuffing the turkey is not really safe! I personally love stuffing but was surprised by the number who mentioned also loving it. I really loved my Mom's and miss it as she passed a couple years ago. My husband's family's traditional stuffing includes a LOT of sage and I don't love it quite so much... but it's still stuffing so I eat anyway!😉
Recommend a book:
🦃that surprises you in some way: could be the cover, the title, or the story/plot took you by surprise, or that you're surprised to see it on your pickee's shelf
🦃that has similar genre tags but mean slightly different things (like stuffing vs dressing): for instance, chick lit and woman's fiction
🦃with a title or author initial that starts with S or D

challenges-pick-list
Edited to add: Christmas is during summer in Australia so my favourite food on Christmas Day is prawns & cheesecake. Yum!

Ha! Do you like your stuffing actually stuffed in the turkey or outside the actual bird?

Ha! Do you like your stuffing actually stuffed in the turkey or outside the actual bird?"
outside the bird...safer that way...no one wants to get ill at Thanksgiving! 😉😁

hmmm...my favorite holiday food?....maybe dressing...or the pies I bake for Thanksgiving...no wait its Christmas Eve: tamales & tres leches cake-yum!

I'm in (and drooling)! Please use my PIFM shelf. No need to go overboard on picks.... I'm reading super slow this Fall!
All these sound delicious, but I'd have to say my family's Swedish meatballs and homemade pumpkin pie!

Please use my to-read-asap shelf - thanks!

I love stuffing at holiday time 🙂

Romance
Both my parents are Italian & it wouldn't be Christmas for me without Panettone. Sweet bread with raisins & oranges paired with a nice hot coffee.

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?
The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.
The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.
You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!
After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.
In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations.
PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)
Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!
Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✳️The books picked for you are not yet released.
✳️If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✳️If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.
You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✳️A book is not available at your library.
✳️A genre or author you don’t enjoy.
