You have 1 month from start date to finish reading the book to count towards BOM. You must participate in the conversation with at least 3 responses for participation points. If you are volunteering to write DQ's for a BOM that does give us additional points, just add your name to the relevant BOM's thread as a DQ volunteer from Team Sorting Recycling. It's typically only one volunteer from any given team that will get to claim one of those spaces.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Hey all! Super excited for this round of Wheel with you all! This is going to be loads of awesome fun. Vicky, Nichole, and I are here to help and support you guys with this challenge so if you have any questions ask away.

Little bit about me, I'm an actor/producer out in LA which basically means my life's never on a consistent schedule. Between my bar job, and all the little additional projects I can find things get a little wonky. I'll check in at least once a day, but the timing of that isn't always going to be consistent.

As a reader, I'm open to reading anything and everything. I've had a bit of a slumpy last couple of months and am excited to have something to push me back to reading more. Kind of excited we're on a truncated time table with this team challenge to start as I'm not going to have to sit on reading any of my books for too long. ;)

All that being said, I can't wait to start! We're going to have the best time and Vicky is the goddess of all things spreadsheets so we'll be the best organized team around. Excited to play with you all!

Now my ansty self can't wait to see what our first word is going to be on the spin.

NOTES
When you check in, can you please add a link to your Wheel shelf for me?

We'll very shortly have the links up for our team spreadsheet. THIS IS NOT THE SPREADSHEET IN THE FIRST POST OF THIS THREAD. Those spreadsheets are viewable for you all to see what's going on with the challenge as a whole, but please don't be requesting access to those as they're for captain use only.

This challenge is supposed to be fun, so please if life hits you with something unexpected just let us know and I'm sure we can work with you. :)

Lastly: Yes there is a reading cap this round, but please don't feel locked into this. If you read a book or more over your cap, just add them to the spreadsheet, we as the captains will make sure that as a team we don't break the top of our reads, but we are conniving brats and will absolutely shift things to get us the most points possible. ;)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Hey team! It's currently past my bedtime, but I'm super excited for another round of wheel so I obviously had to come say hi.

I'm Vicky, I'm in PA where I build board gaming tables and upholster things for a paycheck. I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant, so it's likely I'll fall off the face of the earth for a day or two at some point early to mid November; but I love spreadsheets and will definitely leave you with a good one!

In terms of reading; I mostly gravitate to fantasy, romance and the combination of the two. But I'm down to read pretty much anything that comes with a good recommendation OR fits for a challenge.

Can't wait to read with you all! :)

🌻 📚 Nichole 📚 🌻 | 16 comments Hey hey best team ever!
My name is Nichole. I am a Behavior Therapist for my local school district. I have 3 kiddos, 3 dogs and I have legal guardianship of my little brother who has Down Syndrome. So I use reading as my escape from my chaotic world.
I am new to the book game world, but have been a captain in a couple of games and I have absolutely loved it!! I am so excited to be working along side Shelby and Vicky and I cannot wait to learn all the things from them! I love spreadsheets and all things books!

I am looking forward to new book friends and a super fun challenge!!

Evelyn | 10 comments Hey team! I so relate to what Nichole said--I listen to audiobooks to escape from my chaotic world. Three kids, a dog, a cat, and running my own small business. It's all very purposeful. ...aaaaannnnnddd I need some escapism so that sorting the recycling, doing the dishes, emailing teachers, and walking the dog are more than just 'duties' I must fulfill or the domestic world will crumble. So THANK YOU cozy mysteries and queer coming-of-age romances. I owe you one.

Shelby the Book Goddess is my real life friend who I've known since college and over the past few years we've gotten to reconnect. She's the crazy evil genius who got me into this, and now half my Goodreads bookshelves are called you-did-it-shelby. :)

Thieryn | 107 comments Hi all!

I am on and off Goodreads but I join challenges whenever I can, and this one landed just at the right time for me! I don't have much of a chaotic life at home, but I do have a crazy demanding job. Reading is a great way to decompress, detox, and do some much needed self care. I will also be traveling from the middle of November until middle of January (visiting family in Europe) so even MORE time for reading!

I am reading a lot of MM lately, but generally I am not a huge fan of purely romance books. I need the plot and the smart dialogue and the angst that is actual, not misunderstandings and miscommunications. I am always open to reading mystery and thriller books, as well as fantasy, sci-fi and magical realism. Looking forward to getting some great ideas on what to read from all y'all's shelves :D

This is my shelf for this challenge https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Bernadette (bernadettedaniel) | 898 comments Hello fellow team members - I'm Bernadette and I live in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA with my husband. I have one daughter who got married in December.

During the day I'm CPA/tax accountant at a national accounting firm. I have a flex schedule so this time of year I work 2-3 days a week. I do work some full-time weeks during tax season. Like most accountants, I love a good spreadsheet. I won't ask for a transfer to Team Tax Declarations!🤣💰💸

I am a big library user and am currently on the Board of Directors of my local library. I prefer a physical book to an e-book but about 5 years ago I started listening to audiobooks when my work commute changed, and I love them as well and that has increased my reading. Now I always have a physical book and audiobook going at the same time.

In the summer and Red October, the Phillies are my team/sport of choice. Go Phillies, beat the Mets!⚾ I’m also a big college basketball fan, but my school has been mediocre at best the last few years but seems to be improving.

I'll read almost anything I needed for the team, but my favorites are Historical Fiction, Fiction, Mystery and Thriller. I'm not a fan of SciFi but I do like Fantasy.

Looking forward to this challenge!

As I do live in southern Florida, I am directly in the impact zone for Hurricane Milton. We are staying and not evacuating so I will do my best to keep everyone updated as we go on with that. This does mean LOTS of time to read through my physical TBR - LOL. :)

I am open to reading anything but I tend to read lots of romance, thriller, mystery. etc. I'm not too big on historical but I am not against trying novels in the genre.

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments Hey guys, so excited to join another NBRC challenge and first wheel.
My name is Catherine from SLC, Utah. I used to read like 10-12 books a month and then I started challenges and it more than doubled. Not sure if that was good or bad. Wish Libby didn't have hold waits, but I get it.

I'm weird and like a little of everything. I probably steer more to Fantasy but willing to adventure out and try the weird and unpopular.

I love the organized excel queens, so glad to be on the Recycle team :)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Hey team! I just posted our tracking spreadsheet in my first post at the top of the thread - this is where we'll keep track of the books we're reading.

Everyone go ahead and hit that "view only" button and then hit "request edit access" and we'll get you added to the sheet! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Note that the word in the Round 1 tab is NOT the actual word we're starting with, I just needed a tester. We'll let you know when it's good to start actually adding books. ;)

message 21: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Alright my darlings we've got our first word if you want to start thinking about what you want to read. We'll have the spreadsheet up to date and ready to start planning tomorrow.

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments I have been participating in BOM for the last several months- Started the last challenge. With that said can anyone explain this to me so I can use for this challenge.- Thank You

Remember that you can collect your participation points from previous BOM (from January 2022) for an extra entry in the randomiser, on a basis of 3 participation points to 1 extra entry. Your team will be allowed a maximum of 6 entries for each BOM.

Basically when people volunteer to write DQ's there's usually too many people for how many days there are to write questions for. So they put all the volunteers into a randomizer to draw who will get to write questions. This matters as there are 40pts on the line for each person who gets the opportunity. One of the benefits they added for people who participate in the BOM's regularly is that you can claim a participation point for any BOM that you completed your 3 questions for. For every 3 times you've done this you earn an extra entry. You then can choose on any given BOM to use your extra entry so that your name is in the pot twice giving you an higher chance of being chosen. The max number of entries they'll put in for each team though is capped at 6.

All that make sense? I'm probably making it more convoluted than it really is.

message 25: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Also - on the plus side of the first BOM that counts for bonus points... The Road Trip by Beth O'Leary (starts on the 16th) will fall gloriously in our first round window and author is an O! Definitely going to make sure I fit that one in. :D

Shout it out if you plan on reading the first BOM.

message 26: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments Ok cool I volunteered and added an extra entry as I have been participating in the last 4 or 5 BOM-DQ's.

Also reminder that the BOM qualifies for the bonus points for Date pub in 2021

******Our planning/tracking sheet will be ready soon, but I'll just point out that when you're looking for books, you may want to add a few that are older for some bonus points:
- 5 points for books published more than 2 years ago (2021 or earlier)
- 10 points for books published more than 50 years ago (1973 or earlier)
- 20 points for books over 100 years old (1923 or earlier)

We can also earn bonus points for longer books:
- 5 points for books over 400 pages
- 10 points for books over 600 pages
- 20 points for books over 800 pages
****

message 27: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Good reminders Catherine.

I've put The Road Trip in on the first line of our team sheet and filled it in. I'm just waiting for Vicky to get home from work today and we'll put the finishing touches on the spreadsheet so it does all the fun auto-importing that she makes look easy. It's fighting me over one particular sheet otherwise I'd have it fully operational already.
--Point being if you're looking for examples I've got it on the sheet and have it checked for the extra 5pts for publication date.

I can safely say I'm literally holding out to start reading a couple of books because I want the extra bonus points for those page counts. :) And I've got at least one planed on the over 100yrs old.

message 29: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Hey Team!

Spreadsheet is up and running with our Round 1 word: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

If you haven't requested access to the sheet; please do! I only have 5 of our 11 players added so far. When you open the spreadsheet there will be a button that says "VIEW ONLY" if you click that a little window will come up with a "Request Edit Access" button. Click that and I'll accept your request. Alternatively, you can send me a PM with your e-mail address and I can add you from my end.

If you haven't been on a team with my wheel spreadsheet before (I know there are some familiar faces here!), a little about the spreadsheet:

Round # Stats will give us an overview of the letters we need for the whole round.
•Needed Per Spell: Number of letters we need for each iteration of a word.
•Planned Options: Books listed on the spreadsheet that are not yet either assigned or read. Note that this is a little imperfect because, say, we have 9 Earthsea books by Ursula LeGuin planned on the spreadsheet it will say that we have 9 E, U and L books planned - when we really have a combination of 9 of those. But it does serve as a guideline for what we need and will show us what we're lacking.
•Need to Read: This is the total number of books we need to read for each letter for how many times we expect to spell the word (we calculate this with our projected books for a round based on sign ups).
•Percentage: Percentage of "Need to Read" that is a "Planned Option" - this is the best place to see where we're lacking.

Round # Books is where we'll record books we've read or plan to read. We will refresh this page for each new round, so while you should feel free to add books you are planning try to stay realistic about what you'll get to within the round.

•Book Data: Pretty self explanatory.
•Spell It Out: This is where you'll enter the letters your book works for, try to add every place you can because it will help us shuffle things around when we report them.
•Bonus Points: BIG NOTE While you will have to enter publication date if your book is 2, 50 or 100 years old; the 4/6/800+ page check boxes will automatically fill in based on what you enter in the pages column.
•Captain's Zone: This is where we'll double check that things are good and keep track of what we're moving to the official sheet; the range is locked to the captain's and you shouldn't have to worry about anything there.

Timers tab is a list of all round start/end times. I use the timers because they're more universal, but if anyone wants a particular time zone added to the "end times" list (I know I NEVER remember what time the rounds end) feel free to request!

Read Stats is for anyone interested in how they're reading stacked up against their sign up; we do pull this data straight from the official team sheet and I know there's a little weirdness happening with some people's sign up goals so don't take too much stock in the numbers here until we get all that sorted.

message 30: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I'm currently reading Late Bloomer which I only have about an hour left of listening and I'm debating whether I want to try and fast track The Stone Sky before the challenge starts or not... I started listening to it a few weeks ago but only made it the equivalent of about 30 pages because I've been training my replacement at work and haven't had as much solo audiobook time as I usually get. So I might just restart it. LOL

Outside of that decision I'm starting off the challenge with Heir by Sabaa Tahir, it came out on Tuesday, just arrived to my Libby today and it's 400+ pages, hooray!

I'm going to read as many of the BOMs as I can, but I'm probably not going to be signing up for DQs this challenge. Between the appointments and the third trimester fatigue setting in, I don't think it's wise to overload myself with extra deadlines. ;)

ALSO - just want to say how bummed I am that Wind and Truth, which is easily my most anticipated book for 2024 AND is 1344 pages long, releases on December 6th. It would have been so good for challenge points, but no way I'm reading it in 24 hours!

Thieryn | 107 comments I have added my 5 books for this Round, and let me say, I am nothing if not ambitious! I went for 2 small, 2 medium, and a VERY LONG (and by all accounts very difficult) book... yes indeed, I will try to tackle Ulysees by James Joyce Ulysees by James Joyce!

I figure, if I read 150-200 pages every day, I will be able to complete all of my books with time to spare (especially if I read more on the weekends).

Can someone please confirm though, each round is 2 weeks?

Nope, use the page numbers for which ever edition you're reading! The only time we defer to the default page number is for audiobooks that don't have their own pages. :)

I am asking because I can add/remove/edit stuff as a librarian, and if there's a different edition out there, I can find it and add it.

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Quick Spreadsheet Update

I'm making some changes to streamline and have rearranged the bonus points columns to match the official sheet.

So now, you will ONLY need to enter the year published in column P, column O will automatically update to have the exact text the MODs used on the official sheet and Q will still update based on the pages you enter in the Book Data. Less work all around! :)

message 46: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Another Quick Spreadsheet Update

I added some conditional formatting to the Books tab.

If your book comes up in red italics (see everyone who has added The Road Trip), it means your book title is already on the list. I like to add this because it's an easy way to catch a duplicated book, it's mostly just a catch for the captain's so don't fret if you see it!

If the cell with your book title is that yellow/orange/gold color (see my entry for The Road Trip), it means the captain's have put notes on your book. This will only happen after you've marked a book as read and it will most likely mean it hasn't been added to your read or challenge shelves or doesn't have a date on your GR shelf. We'll likely call out the issues here as we double check - but I like visual aids on my spreadsheets!
