20.2 - Rookie at the Top - Catherine's Task: All Hallow's Challenge

November 1st is All Saints' Day. Pick an option from the choices below and read one book for that option.
Required: State the option.

Option 1 - Read a book whose author is recognised as a saint.
Required: If not explicitly part of the Goodreads author page, then provide a reference to their status as a saint

Examples: The Confessions of St. Augustine by Augustine of Hippo
The Rule of Saint Benedict by Benedict of Nursia
Catherine of Siena: The Dialogue by Catherine of Siena

Option 2 – Read abook with the word ‘saint’ in the title or subtitle. Possessive and plural forms are allowed. The abbreviation “St.” is also allowed, but only if it stands for 'saint'. Can also be part of a larger word. Can be in another language, but if it is, then identify the word and the language.

Examples: Saints and Sinners: Stories
St. Elmo's Fire
Chronicle of the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds
They Hanged My Saintly Billy: The Life and Death of Dr. William Palmer

Option 3 – Read a book with MPG of Religion or Theology.
Examples: The Great Divorce
Bearing False Witness: Debunking Centuries of Anti-Catholic History
Back to Virtue: Traditional Moral Wisdom for Modern Moral Confusion
Orthodoxy

Yes, Religion is one of the MPGs listed, so this works for Option 3.

Robin P | 1609 comments Just confirming, it is the MPG that counts, not the subject/style? I have Bestest. Ramadan. Ever., which is basically a teen romance. But religion is apparently important to the story and it has the MPG.

In case others are assuming Religion will only be found in nonfiction books about theology, there are undoubtedly other fiction books that could work.

That is correct - if it has the MPG, it counts. It was following that same rationale that I listed The Great Divorce.

In most cases, yes.

If you are reading a book in Spanish or Portuguese, and the title includes the word 'Santa' - yes.

If you are reading a book that references a Spanish or Portuguese place name that references a saint (such as Santa Marta) - yes.

If you mean a book about the jolly gentleman who fills stockings at Christmas - given that Santa is a modified version of a bona fide saint ( St. Nicholas of Myra) - yes.

If I have missed a meaning, then let me know.

Thanks, that helps.

Paul (metshaft) | 106 comments The Revival We Need is this ok for option 3?

Thanks

message 13: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 20 comments I am sorry to disappoint, but after consideration I have decided to disallow The Revival We Need.

'Christian' is really more of a sub-genre than a variant or 'Religion'. Additionally, allowing one specific sub-genre would raise the issue of having to allow all religion-specific MPGs, with all the potential arguments about what does or does not constitute a religion.
