Oh, it's said that Eve was made out of Adam's rib.

I completely agree Jessalina.

Jessalina i totally agree with u like who knows if there is god but i never go to church. and i disagree with a lot of parts in the bible. and i am really happy that Libba Bray did that

Felicity was always my favorite character--she's strong and defiant and I can relate to her. Her sexuality just made sense to me, I sort of guessed it. For me, it pulled everything together and suddenly more things made sense.
Speaking as one who doesn't know her own orientation, Felicity's fling with Ithal made complete sense. I don't know if she's bi, lesbian, or straight--that's Libba Bray's thing. She created the character. But no matter what her orientation, Felicity makes sense to me. She's confused and upset because her best friend and maybe lover wants nothing more than the perfect man, which Felicity knows she can't provide. And Felicity I don't think knows herself what she wants. Relationships between guys and girls, and girls and girls are very different, and maybe Felicity wanted to test herself with Ithal and Pippa.

Lisa | 55 comments Ah, thanks (G)Emma, time for a reread!

It's great to see you here Deliabookworm! It's great to see people in this group are willing to entertain the idea of alternate ideas and beliefs. Off topic a bit here: I like to take bits and pieces from lots of different belief systems and apply them to my life. Usually the original doctorines have some excellent truths in them. When "experts" interpret and tell me how I'm supposed to believe I tend to shy away. Christianity does have many applicable truths, but honestly, there are some totally unreasonable expectations in the bible. Two Christian traditions I've always liked: 1) God is the ultimate judge. Okay then, it's not my place to judge, we'll leave that to God. 2) With God all things are possible. It's not my place to decide which things are and aren't possible. Let the mystery be!

Delia, I agree too, Fee was confused.

I agree that I like that she made them lesbians, it was very brave, but I saw it coming, and didn't mind, even tho i'm not the biggest gay/lesbian supporter, I don't hate it.
And Jessalina, I agree with pretty much everything you said about God, that he's not conceited and cruel like the Bible makes him out to be.
And I feel bad for Ithal. D:

I just felt she was being true to her characters. I was happy about that.

message 210: by [deleted user] (new)

ya it is nice. cuz most books u read dont have anything about being gay or lesbian

message 211: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 5135 comments Mod
Well...you can always find them. Luckily, no matter if a book is banned or not, it's easy to find. There are many books about gay and lesbian issues.

message 212: by [deleted user] (new)

ya but it in YA books that are fantisy or action or watever they almost always have boyfriends

message 213: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 5135 comments Mod
Ah, I see what you mean. If the book isn't ABOUT gays it typically in the book.

message 214: by [deleted user] (new)

ya

message 215: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay It's true, what you say. TSFT is the only book I can think of that isn't labeled gay or lesbian that actually has those kind of relationships in it.

message 216: by Allie, A hopeless romantic who doesn't believe in love (new)

Allie (pearlrose95) | 3724 comments Mod
No, not really, though yes there are few like it. For example, the mortal instrument series, City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass by Cassandra Clare have a main character who is gay.

message 217: by Lindsay (last edited Apr 11, 2009 04:39PM) (new)

Lindsay And I don't think God is conceited. What my church believes is that every single one of us on Earth are spirit brothers and sisters. Before we came to Earth, Heavenly Father (God) told us that he was going to create the Earth and said he needed someone to go to Earth to be a sacrifice and example for everyone. The two who volunteered were Jesus and Lucifer (Satan). Satan's plan was that none of us would be able to make any of our choices, and he would make us choose the right all the time, whether we liked it or not, and he would get all the glory. Jesus, however, said people would have to make their own choices and earn the right to live with Heavenly Father again, and that all the glory would be Heavenly Father's. Then, all of Heavenly Father's children (aka us) were given the choice to choose which plan they liked better, and one third of Heavenly Father's children sided with Satan. They were cast out from heaven and became Satan's angels, and everyone who chose Jesus's plan came to Earth. So everyone on Earth chose Jesus's plan. Anyway... that's just what I believe.

message 219: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay I agree with you with the not being my cup of tea stuff. It seems odd to me as well...

I'm mormon. And as an answer to your question, they were thrown out because they made the wrong decision, and went against their father, really. There was a big huge argument between everyone, and in the end, Satan and his angels were thrown out.

Well, it seemed like she played him. And then he put himself out there when he had the rose for her (didn't flowers have BIG meaning in Victorian times), and she dissed him by having her horse tromp on it....I do need to reread that.

message 222: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 55 comments Dairy Queen by Catherine Murdock has a minor storyline revolving around a lesbian character. It's not nearly as complex a story as The Gemma Doyle Trilogy, but still gives you something to think about.

message 223: by [deleted user] (new)

yaa i guess thats true lisa.

y dont u get it. its the same as a girl liking a guy. you feel the same emotions just it's a girl instead of a guy

message 225: by [deleted user] (new)

but there could be a future to her life. she can do many other things ya she cant get pregnant but so wat

message 226: by [deleted user] (new)

she said the book B4

message 227: by [deleted user] (new)

ya thats it

message 228: by [deleted user] (new)

wat weird

message 229: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay I think it's a little weird... as I said, I'd much rather read an adorable romance between a guy and a girl. They're just naturally way cuter.

message 230: by [deleted user] (new)

no there not thats just cuz u grew up learning that guys and girls are supposed to b together

message 231: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Because they are. *sigh* I just think that it's so darn cute!! I'm thinking of all these adorable romances between a guy and a girl, and they're so ADORABLE!! <3

I agree Lindsay.
Oh and in the circle of magic books by Tamira Pierce a HUGE character turned out to b lesbian in the last book. I didn't like that at all, because unlike in TGDT there were no clues, and this was a long series, focused on her and three others. Also in the last book, they decide their teachers are lesbians and always had been, also not hinted, and throughout they'd only been friends, separated often, having their own rooms, and suddenly they were lovers??? That made me mad, because other than that it was a great, well written series.

Daja, in The Will Of The Empress she becomes 1.

Allie (pearlrose95) | 3724 comments Mod
Me too... Just not that, cuz I feel it was sorta stupid, w no warning about her or about Lark and Rosethorn. Or maybe Im the stupid one, but rereading the series I still find no clues, even knowing what happened, unlike when I reread TGDT, where it was all but obvious. But I love all Tamora Pierces books.

Hmm, interesting Lindsay.

Um, what books are you all reading? Boy girl relationships all vary. Gay couples can be really tender and sweet. If you're in love, you're in love. Period. I love it in ANY book or movie when the characters are being true to themselves. I've known lesbians personally, and they were very interesting and awesome individuals. I've read a few books about gays and I'd love to read more. I like understanding things.

message 238: by [deleted user] (new)

ya i agree Emma i was a BIG fan of Buffy the vamp slayer and i still loved the charichters that turned out to be gay they were actually my favs and i thought that realation ship was the best one in the whole show. i find that just cuz girls with girls cant reproduce they can still be cute ralation ships

message 239: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 5135 comments Mod
Although I would understand if you're talking about sexual tension. I think you'd be more aware of heterosexual sexual tension if you're heterosexual and homosexual sexual tension if you're homosexual.

message 240: by [deleted user] (new)

ok that confused me

message 241: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 5135 comments Mod
I just meant that you'd be more aware of sexual tension between people in books and movies if they were the same sexuality as you.

Emma Blue (litlover) | 5135 comments Mod
Hmm...yeah, that's true. I'm just not exactly sure what you're defining as "cute".

message 243: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 55 comments I tend to be more comfortable or understanding with gay relationships than with lesbian relationships in books. My husband is the opposite. The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs has a very compelling gay character/couple.

I read that part a few times before it actually believed it. I think that Libba Bray was trying to and was very succesful in making a point there about issues we're dealing with today. Gays and Lesbos are just like the rest of us exceot for the fact that they like the same gender. If you have read the entire series and get ti know everthing else about felicity and piper before you learn about thier relationship your opinion about them doesnt really change.
