Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments Awesome choice. I read this last year, but the memory is still strong. It's my favorite stand-alone novel by him. I'll be joining in to see what other group members think. Cheers!

message 6: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 I have priced a copy at $12.99+ but ordered a copy at the library today immediately. I am #9 on 10 copies, and this is getting a HOLD in early. Plan to read it for the group read if I can rent it.

message 11: by Jim (new)

Jim | 99 comments Great book! I wish I had time to read it again, but I'm in other groups and have a big pile at this point. I wish I knew more about the Blackfoot and Crow cultures though -- I have a feeling I may have missed some subtleties in the plot.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments While it seemed like only last year when I read this, it was actually December 2021 - - but I still remember some of those images so vividly it seemed not that long ago.
Here's my review, essentially spoiler-free - - - if you're on the fence about reading this book, this might persuade you. I recommend it to almost everyone . . . . . .https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

If you're up for a trilogy, try MY HEART IS A CHAINSAW first and then move onto the next two. Although, you can read it as a standalone. The story ends, and the other two books begin new stories.
A good werewolf novel with a bit of symbolism is MONGRELS.

Dot This will also be my first SGJ book. I’ve had a handful of his books on my TBR for so long but never got around to reading them so I can’t wait!

I read this one a couple years ago and so I'm looking forward to chatting and seeing what other people thought of it.

message 33: by FranWeird (new)

FranWeird | 15 comments Is it just me, or was the writing a little all over the place in the beginning?

Linh | 3 comments FranWeird wrote: "Is it just me, or was the writing a little all over the place in the beginning?"

I agreeeee!!! Glad I wasn't the only one lol, I kept having to re-read sentences because the order of certain words tripped me up! 😆 I'm getting a hang of his writing now though, and the plot really picked up after after that event with Lewis and Shaney.

message 35: by Jeff (new)

Jeff McIntosh | 225 comments I I really disliked this book.

Would not consider reading anything else from him.

It took me a while to get the gist of the writing style in the beginning, as well.

His writing style is typically very unconventional. I've struggled through a few of his stories and have given up on trying to read him.

Debra Sneddon | 10 comments My first SGJ! I’m halfway through. Enjoying the cultural education.

I can see that. We'll see how this book goes and then I'll decide if I will read more of his books.

Dustin (dustinfrueh) FranWeird wrote: "Is it just me, or was the writing a little all over the place in the beginning?"

His writing style is definitely unique and takes some time getting used to. After a bit, though, I came to love the way he writes.

This was first SGJ, too. The cultural insights were a highlight for me, as well.

message 43: by Linh (new)

Linh | 3 comments I finished this book! There were some parts that genuinely shocked me (in a good way, I enjoyed the roller coaster ride) but most of the time I found the story a tad unbelievable and boring.

I have a couple of questions, for those who are done as well. Don't unhide the spoiler tag if you haven't finished the book, I got major spoilers in them:

Anyways, I love Denorah. ❤️❤️ She's the highlight of this book for me. I'm not sure if I'll read another by SGJ but I'm glad I checked this one out.

message 44: by Rhiannon (new)

Rhiannon | 7 comments I finished the book and I gave it a 4/5!
Like I observed before, this authors writing style was a little bit all over the place at times and the beginning of this book lagged because of that. Once the story started to pick up I was able to get into a good pace and overall I thought it was an interesting story that was creative. It lost a star because there were times where the writing went in circles but other than that it was a fun ride. I do have one question that involves the ending so I won't ask until I am sure everyone is finished. I have also been interested in SGJ's The Indian Lake Trilogy for some time, has anyone read it/ recommends it??

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments I planned on starting this earlier, but got sidetracked. I'm starting it today. I'm seeing slightly mixed reviews, mostly on the writing style. Now I'm curious.

message 49: by FranWeird (new)

FranWeird | 15 comments It was an ok read, in my opinion. Felt the second half of the book had a faster pace and writing made more sense
