I really liked the author's 2 previous books, which are complex, as is this one. But I felt like this had way too much to keep track of, and most of the characters were rather flat (turns out there's a reason for this, but still . . ). A small group on an island are the only survivors of a killing fog. They can never leave their area but they have established a thriving community. However, some things are odd, nobody lives over 60 and children show up at 8 years old.
I feel like I have seen this story a lot, where a group is saving itself thanks to experts but it turns out they are being lied to - Wool Omnibus, The Giver, Cloud Cuckoo Land. It might be that I was suffering from too much dystopia, reading this right after The Epic of Gilgamesh (the original flood story) and Naamah, a retelling of Noah's Ark. This wasn't bad but it just seemed like the author was trying too hard.
