The Overstory

Fantasy: Ella Enchanted. Such a beautifully told fantasy story that builds such a lovely world without some of the more milquetoast worldbuilding or poor prose that unfortunately plagues a lot of other fantasy books.
Romance: Pride and Prejudice. I see it as more of a social satire, but there is still romance, and it's a very well-written one. Maybe not as steamy or "spicy" as what other people like, but it is quite solidly written :).
Dystopia: The Giver. The Hunger Games is a close second for me, but no dystopia could ever beat The Giver. Beautiful, profound, and heartbreaking.
Poetry: A Light in the Attic. Shel Silverstein is a treasure, and I think everyone could benefit from reading some solid poetry like his.
General classic: Anne of Green Gables. Perfect in every way, such a charming book that exemplifies everything a classic can be. Sweet, lovingly told, just wonderful.
Contemporary: Circe. This one is just a recent favorite of mine. Circe is so magically written and one of my favorite contemporary books. It shows that beautiful prose isn't dead just yet.
Play: Hamlet. It's iconic, it's great, and it's not Romeo and Juliet :).
Literary: The Bell Jar. I'm not even done with it and I already recommend this book. It's gorgeous.
This list could benefit from some more diverse authors though, I'm not familiar enough with any particular good books but I know they're out there. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to know :).
