theDuke | 6491 comments Potential here for a couple of upsets..and a couple of coin flip games, but mostly looking straightforward this week......but it probably won't be! No idea about the first game though..should be Brisbane, right? Then again, Collingwood might just go and do a repeat of the 2023 GF result......flip....flip...flip!

Anyway..here's my 8:

Round 3:

Brisbane - 5
Blues
Dockers

Val H. | 22141 comments Tonight's result:

Brisbane Lions (David) v Collingwood Magpies (on hiatus)
1.3.9 (Q1) 5.3.33
5.8.38 (Q2) 5.3.33
6.10.46 (Q3) 10.6.66
10.12.72 (Q4) 14.8.92

Not a pretty game at all with both teams making a lot of errors, probably as a result of pressure. But it was the Pies that came home strongest so credit to them. The Lions aren't playing like a team at the moment and their communication isn't great. Some of their stars are not shining at all - Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage are the exceptions. Suzy was the only one of us brave enough to tip the Pies so she wins $7.00 for Friends With Dignity.

message 110: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments It was an awful game with the Lions never getting into it. Their tall forwards were nowhere to be seen and they are beginning to have the look of a spent force.
The Pies did all they needed to do to run out simple winners. Whilst not looking great themselves there were signs that the defence has tightened up and generally the whole team playing for each other

message 111: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I agree with everything you said Tim. Daniher constantly misjudged marks and Eric Hipwood brings no strength to the contest. It almost looks as though they have problems off-field as they certainly can't come together on-field. Mind you, Collingwood were miles off their best. It would be hard to draw any line of form from that game although it will have given the Pies some confidence.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Freo Crows game very poor quality although exciting until last 15 minutes when Freo finally made possession count. So many dropped marks throughout. Crows have major issues again. Scoring only 34 points aganst a very averae team.

Essendon Bombers (Val) v St Kilda Saints (Tim)
3.1.19 (Q1) 4.4.28
5.3.33 (Q2) 6.8.44
8.5.53 (Q3) 8.12.60
10.11.71 (Q4) 9.13.67

Port Adelaide Power (available) v Melbourne Demons (on hiatus)
4.1.25 (Q1) 3.2.20
7.3.45 (Q2) 7.3.45
10.8.68 (Q3) 10.4.64
13.11.89 (Q4) 15.6.96

Yes, you read that right and yes, we're not very good at tipping. I watched the first game with my heart in my mouth. St Kilda really should have won it. They are a better team than Essendon right now but their kicking wasn't accurate enough in the first three quarters and they ran out of puff in the final quarter when Essendon really mounted the pressure. Essendon still has glaring gaps in defence but were lucky to score some break-away goals. I'm not overly impressed with the standard of umpiring this season. There's far too many inconsistencies - especially with holding the ball. Both teams missed out on what I saw as free kicks and those offences that were pinged didn't warrant any attention in Friday night's game.

I only saw the end of tonight's game. I always enjoy seeing either of the Adelaide teams defeated at home. Their crowds are the most parochial of all and their booing is always the loudest. Take that, Port!

Val H. | 22141 comments Yesterday's results:

Western Bulldogs (Blastro) v West Coast Eagles (Sussex)
2.4.16 (Q1) 2.2.14
8.6.54 (Q2) 2.3.15
11.8.74 (Q3) 2.7.19
16.10.106 (Q4) 3.12.30

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
4.3.27 (Q1) 2.1.13
5.9.39 (Q2) 7.5.47
10.13.73 (Q3) 8.9.57
11.16.82 (Q4) 11.11.77

I hope Tim didn't have heart failure at the G yesterday. It looks as though the Swans stopped in the third quarter but came home strong, just too late.

Apologies for being late. I had a late night last night. As I posted on another thread : "And feeling my age now - I was at a gig tonight to see Southern rockers the Drive-By Truckers. They played (fabulously but loud) from 9.00 - 11.15pm. I was home by midnight but still buzzing. It's now 1.45am and time for me to turn in. I think I've reached the age for matinees only."

Tim may be interested to know that they changed the lyrics in their song "Let There Be Rock" from

"And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Molly Hatchet
With 38 Special and the Johnny Van Zant Band."

to

"And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd and I never saw The Clash
but I sure saw Midnight Oil and Crowded House"

to great applause from the audience. And the Northcote Theatre is a lovely venue but be prepared to stand unless, like me, you can cite a disability (sciatica has taken three months of my life this year and still little relief) in which case you get a padded stool, with backrest at the front of the mezzanine floor (as long as you can get up the stairs).

message 121: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments First time seeing them for me (I only have five of their albums). I think I went with Jason Isbell when he left the band (love him, have most of his output and seen him about four times). But the DBTs were terrific and we were treated to 23 songs.

Val H. | 22141 comments Every team analysed after Round 3 in just three words.

ADELAIDE CROWS: Just so bland.

BRISBANE LIONS: Not about Vegas.

CARLTON: Finally not close!

COLLINGWOOD: Had to. Did.

ESSENDON: Midfield genuinely elite?

FREMANTLE: 3-0 = finals...

GEELONG: Wildly accurate again.

GOLD COAST SUNS: Had the bye.

GWS GIANTS: Had the bye.

HAWTHORN: Blue shell missed.

MELBOURNE: More Adelaide success!

NORTH MELBOURNE: Defensive personnel rough.

PORT ADELAIDE: The better side.

RICHMOND: Joy! And injuries...

ST KILDA: What happened late?

SYDNEY SWANS: Slight reality check.

WEST COAST EAGLES: Honestly? Weren’t awful.

message 126: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments What a strange round. I was remarkably calm at the G as was half expecting a reality check although didn't tip it. Tigers stopped the Swans powering through the middle and played a good game. We missed chances but overall not good enough to make a plan B.
Interesting how the lyrics changed and I bet the crowd did cheer.
You remind me so much of Victoria and myself when going to these small venues. Often standing and Victoria has to plead bad back or similar to find a seat.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Went to see Anatomy of a Fall yesterday. Oppenheimer must be some film to beat this to best picture. Beautifully written and acted. Very interesting with a German lead in a French film changing language to English especially in the court scenes because her French was not up to it. Can highly recommend.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Poor game this evening I thought for prestigous round and big crowd. Only bright spot for Crows for me was the continuing high performance of ex Swan Jordan Dawson as captain of the Crows. Madness that he was off the pitch in crucial period about 10 minutes from the end. Congratulations for Val getting margin spot on.

3.8.26 (Q2) 6.7.43
6.9.45 (Q3) 10.13.73
8.15.63 (Q4) 10.18.78

I really enjoyed tonight's game. The Crows never gave up but the Demons had their measure all across the ground. I specially enjoyed the score as I had tipped the Dees by 15 so I win $7.00 for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Val H. | 22141 comments Today's results:

Brisbane Lions (David) v North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve)
7.3.45 (Q1) 2.0.12

13.11.89 (Q3) 5.5.35

Port Adelaide Power (available) v Essendon Bombers (Val)
4.0.24 (Q1) 3.4.21
10.3.63 (Q2) 3.4.28
13.7.85 (Q3) 6.5.41
17.9.111 (Q4) 6.6.42

I didn't see the earlier game but it was probably as dismal as this evening's game. After the first quarter Essendon were outplayed in every position. It's hard to pick a player who could rightly hold his head up. Maybe Andy McGrath. Meanwhile Port were superb. Connor Rozee and Jason Horne-Francis were amazing and Darcy Byrne-Jones is an unsung hero. back to the drawing-board Bombers.

message 141: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Both games very poor in contrast to the first 2 today. Swans given huge fright by a resurgent Eagles who showed great promise and it wasnt until the final quarter the Swans were able to pull away. Interestingly they were kicking against the wind in that final quarter and the vast majority of gosls had been scored at the end the Eagles were attacking in the last quarter.
The Dockers Blues game proved how exciting low scoring games can be but for me was ruined by disgraceful decisions for the Blues in the last minute that gave them a scoreline that flattered them.

I agree re the end of the Freo/Blues game. Hate to see results determined by arbitrary decisions. Tonight's game was also close. The Cats couldn't shake the Dogs but I think they deserved the win.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Happy birthday Sussex. Some exciting matches today which just caught up on. Nearly some shocks from all 3 games but form prevailed in the end although Magpies relieved to hear final siren.
We have been to see the National Theatre Live screening of The Motive and the Cue this afternoon which is a play based on the rehearsals of a 1964 production of Hamlet directed by Sir John Gielgud with Richard Burton as Hamlet. Astonishing and anyone interested in theatre it is a must. Mark Gatiss played Gielgud and Johnny Flynn is an amazing Richard Burton. Tuppence Middleton was a very life like Liz Taylor. 3 hours of magic for me.
