Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Fingers crossed Anita but we have not beaten Port since 2017. Has to happen sometime soon and I do not think we have played them in Sydney since 2017.

Val H. | 22141 comments Tonight's result:

Sydney Swans (Anita) v Port Adelaide Power (available)
4.0.24 (Q1) 2.3.15
9.1.55 (Q2) 4.6.30
13.7.85 (Q3) 6.9.45
14.11.95 (Q4) 8.11.59

One of those nights when the Swans were on song from the first bounce. They couldn't do a thing wrong - marks were held, passes were accurate, goals went through the two big uprights. They may have tired and/or eased up in the final quarter but they never looked in danger from the start - even when Port led a couple of times in the first quarter. Tim must have been both relieved and proud to see his team perform so well. For those of us who don't have a dog in the fight, it was a bit boring. Despite wanting to see Sydney win, I was kind of hoping Port would put up more of a fight and make it a real contest. Instead Port were outplayed and outclassed all across the ground. Swans head to the Grand Final as they so richly deserve.

1.5.11 (Q1) 3.2.20
8.7.55 (Q2) 5.6.36
10.8.68 (Q3) 10.10.70
12.13.85 (Q4) 14.11.95

A much closer game than last night's. It boiled down to whoever would win it, they'd deserve it. And in this case it was the Lions who came out on top. With scores about even and with five minutes to go, they scored two miraculous goals. Bad luck Geelong and especially to Max Holmes (he missed out on the 2022 Grand Final with a preliminary round injury and he was missed tonight when subbed out of the game). Well done Lions but I still think the Swans are a superior side. And well done Tim who wins $15.00 for the Koala Sanctuary at Port Macquarie.

Val H. | 22141 comments AFL 2024 GRAND FINAL

Sydney Swans [1] vs Brisbane Lions [5]

Saturday September 28, 2.30pm at the MCG

Tips in by 5.30am Saturday but earlier if you can.

message 761: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Thanks Val. I really need someone to explain why and who makes Geelong play big matches in Melbourne. They would have more than likely won tonight at the "Cattery" if given the choice. That ground is long and narrow and hard for anyone else to play on especially given their very vocal support. I know there were 93000 at the MCG tonight as opposed to the less than 30000 at Geelong but if you are a Geelong supporter where would you rather play? Why spend the money on upgrading their stadium over the last two seasons if they cannot use it in big matches?

message 762: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments I have to go for the Swans and pick them by 22 points. My main fear is that Brisbane will be up and do everything to avoid a consecutive GF defeat.
I have my ticket and booked flights which wisely did before Brisbane made the final. It is generally cheap for season memberships but the GF is really something else by Australian standards. You may all be interested to know my ticket cost $493 for next week plus the $100 I paid up front with my membership to guarantee a final ticket. My membership for the season in contrast which gave me access to all Swans games in Victoria plus up to 6 at the SC G and all other non Swans games in Melbourne except the Anzac game day was $420. Amazing difference.

Val H. | 22141 comments Tim wrote: "Thanks Val. I really need someone to explain why and who makes Geelong play big matches in Melbourne. They would have more than likely won tonight at the "Cattery" if given the choice. That ground ..."

One word - MONEY! That's all the AFL cares about. Chris Scott moaned about it for years but I think he's given up.

message 764: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments When you say ticket, do you mean your seat ticket at the SCG? At first I thought air ticket. The "away" membership is excellent value. What will you do (and pay) next year as a Brisbane resident?

message 765: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments No I have my MCG ticket which was guaranteed because I pay the additional $100 up front with my membership.
My friends in Melbourne didn't but they also have tickets through the second priority ballot but they have the lowest price which was a mere $310 for 2. That means they either have restricted view or standing. Neither great options but at least we can go together.

message 766: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments Sorry, I meant MCG in my earlier post. When you say "go together" will you enjoy the match together? You've got a guaranteed seat; I would presume they're in a different section??

message 767: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Yes we wont be together during game but can travel together as I am staying with them.
Not sure what the Swans offer for Queenland members but will be investigating soon.

message 769: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Thanks Anita I certainly hope it is a better experience than the awful one in 2022! Try to put that out of my memory.
Now I know my seat as ticket arrived yesterday I am extremely disappointed. Most expensive but in 5th row so very low and if wet ( which it doesn't appear it is going to be ) will get soaked and if sunny will be staring into sun all afternoon. I can tell you that is very unpleasant as first time a MCG for match against Richmond that's exactly what happened.

message 770: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Forecast is for sunny and warm day by Melbourne standards at 24 degrees. Looks as if will be borrowing headgear from my mates I am staying with as I am not going home now before game.

message 774: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments Monday night's Brownlow Medal was won by Patrick Cripps of Carlton so that means another $15.00 goes into the kitty for re-distribution after the Grand Final. He won with a record -breaking 46 votes. And I think Collingwood's Nick Daicos also broke the previous record for number of votes. But it did throw up some anomalies and errors. In Round 19 Cripps got two votes in a game where they lost to Essendon and he only got 19 disposals for the game. In one game, one vote went to Josh Davis instead of Nick Daicos and in another Nick got votes when he was subbed off at half-time with only 15 disposals. Umpies favourites?? And it appears the umpires just don't see Marcus Bontompelli (who should also have been nominated for Goal of the Year), never mind Tom Papley (8 votes??) I don't have any problems with Cripps winning - he had a stellar season - but I don't think he should have won it in 2022 when he should have been suspended for his tackle on Callum Ah Chee (IMHO). I don't know if Isaac Heeney would have got up as his team mates, Chad Warner and Errol Gulden, won so many votes in their own right.

message 775: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments It does seem odd if I a team has several potential winning candidates they end up with no chance as divide the votes.

message 776: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Shame for Callum Mills. I do not believe this was his decision but for the best if not 100%. We saw that with Sam Reid in 2022.

Val H. | 22141 comments Quarter time score:

Sydney Swans (Anita) v Brisbane Lions (on hiatus)
3.1.19 (Q1) 4.3.27

It's really anyone's game now. I thought Brisbane settled quicker and their defence looks strong. Starcevich and Lester have been good. They could have been two goals up very quickly if they hadn't over-allowed for the slight breeze. Sydney's goals were strong and accurate (that man Papley is so dangerous). My Norm Smith medallist at quarter-time: Hugh McLuggage.

Val H. | 22141 comments Half-time score:

Sydney Swans (Anita) v Brisbane Lions (on hiatus)
3.1.19 (Q1) 4.3.27
4.3.27 (Q2) 11.7.73

I don't think anyone saw this sort of blow-out! And Sydney were gifted a goal by the umpires for the 50 metre penalty awarded against Dane Zorko. All the commentators were totally bemused by it. Well done Chris Fagan for his match-ups. Warner, Heeney, Gulden all well held. I'm still impressed by Starcevich's work in defence for the Lions. Sydney's defence has been woeful. The Norm Smith could go to Kai Lohmann for his three goals, Josh Dunkley for his clean hands or Lachie Neale just for being Lachie Neale - magic. However, don't go away, the Swans have been notorious for starting slowly and coming home like a train.

message 784: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I'm not a Katy Perry fan but her 5 song set was certainly spectacular for the TV audience. I don't know what it looked like from the outer but it looked a million dollars on the telly. And kudos to Cody Simpson for singing the national anthem simply - no pop flourishes.

message 785: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments If anyone can pull a rabbit out the hat its John Longmire. Good to see Cam Rayner back on the field but Logan McDonaldi is finished for Sydney.

Sydney Swans (Anita) v Brisbane Lions (on hiatus)
3.1.19 (Q1) 4.3.27
4.3.27 (Q2) 11.7.73
5.4.34 (Q3) 16.11.107

It's all going Brisbane's way. To the extent that it's hard to pick any Swans player who you can say has had a good game. Will Ashcroft (Lions) is starting to cut them up mid-field and in front of goal. Norm Smith medal?? Put a pin in any Lions player - Callum Ah-Chee has four goals.

message 787: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Just logged on to catch up on the scores...gee....i wasn't expecting this. Disappointing effort from Sydney.....looking like another Port Adelaide result.

Luke Parker scored three consolation goals for the Swans in the final quarter but you could see they had lost heart. (Rumour has it Parker will move to North Melbourne next year.) I'm not sure what happened to Isaac Heeney but it was sad to see him finish on the bench. I was surprised the Norm Smith medal went to Will Ashcroft but it could have gone to half a dozen Lions players. I was delighted for Noah Answerth - a true journeyman player if ever there was one. In my career working in the local primary school, I knew Noah (and his twin sister and older brother, also a talented footballer) well. He was a small and slightly built boy but single minded in his love of sport - any sport. I've followed his career since he was drafted and I'm delighted that he is now a premiership player.

Philip was closest to the pin today and so wins $15.00 for Canteen. I've got a busy week ahead but I'll be back as soon as I can with a wrap-up of your winnings and charity donations. Thank you all for your enthusiastic support.

message 789: by Anita (new)

Anita Bailey | 3841 comments Tim I'm so sorry about this result,I just can't believe they've lost a final again,Sob!

message 790: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments So sorry none of this came through to me!! Very weird reading it all now.

Thanks Anita it was very hard to take especially after the pain of 2022. However then I was on my own but this time I had two friends who only saw half the pitch from the pathetic standing areas. My goodness the AFL really drag in every cent they can. And what got me is that all bars with seating were excluded from fans of the two finalists and were reserved for AFL members.

After the game we went to a pub in West Richmond to console ourselves and had a lovely evening meeting many Brisbane fans who were very good.

Brisbane were awesome and the Swans did not know how to react. In 2022 I put it down to youth but that does not work now.

Deep down I think it went wrong in the week before. The Callum Mills decision was not handled well and we certainly missed him on the pitch. He clearly wanted to play and listening to other players last week they were upset.

I flew back late last evening and when we touched down a guy started singing the Lions song and then everyone joined in. It seemed perfect and made me happy to be returning to a city that won. However I remain a Swan but would consider a Lions membership which are very cheap. But my wife and I have just taken out a Queensland Reds membership ( the rugby union team here for those in the UK) for the first time in 5 years. They gave us our old seats and have all our records so welcomed back with open arms. The draw for next season is out already and just contemplating, for our one overseas away game we normally do, whether to go to Christchurch Dunedin or Suva.

The Swans will find it hard I believe. Longmire is a great coach but he may feel after 4 GF losses he has taken them as far as he can. Personally I hope not. He still has unfinished business.

We ll done to the Lions. They really deserved it.

message 791: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments And Val. Again what can I say. You make the season for me and this forum is so wonderful. Thank you so much for your extraordinary generosity. I look forward already to next year.

I sat next to the fence that separates AFL members. My neighbour was a loud but genuine Essendon fan which I thought quite fitting. Apparently it was his 25th GF running. Somehow I find this difficult to take when so many supporters from the participating teams cannot get tickets. Anyway it was a better experience than 2022 as my seat was wonderful apart from being in the sun. I was well protected though with a large hat.

Thank you and good luck to all my fellow tipsters. See you next year.

Tonight at 5 30 local time we are raising a margarita to our dear friend Garry who lived in Brisbane and supported every team in every code here. He died at 5 30pm on this day last year at 61 just 15 minutes after the Lions lost last year. I like to think they won it this year for him and all his friends in Brisbane will be raising that glass tonight.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Hi Val, I am having issues as have received no new notices since this post. Sussex said I should sign out and back in, but this has not worked.
Any ideas?

message 793: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I think we're all afflicted by the same curse. I access Goodreads by going to

https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

where I see all the threads associated with the Amazon Exiles group. Helen and I have both noted on the "Snails" thread that we weren't seeing the red "new posts" - and that was on August 1st! Duke is also having problems. I'm just relying at looking at the dates of the last post.

message 794: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments Okay folks, I've done all the accounting and made the donations. You may remember I did half-season donations back in June - see message 490 on Page 10 of this thread on Jun 27, 2024.

So this is all winnings after that date:

VAL - (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre) - $0.00 +$30.00 (redistributed) = $30.00 (c£15.50)

ANITA - (The Mirabel Foundation) - $33.00 rounded up to $35.00 +$5.00 (redistributed) = $40.00 (c£20.50)

TIM - (Koala Hospital - Port Macquarie) - $30.00 +$5.00 (redistributed) = $35.00 (c£18.00)

PHILIP - (Canteen) - $83.00 rounded up to $85.00 +$5.00 (redistributed) = $90.00 (c£46.50)

SJ BROOKE (Steve) - (Backpack Bed For Homeless) - $29.00 rounded up to $30.00 +$5.00 (redistributed) = $35.00 (c£18.00)

SUSSEXWELSH - (Save The Bilby Fund) - $59.00 rounded up to $60.00 +$5.00 (redistributed) = $65.00 (c£33.50)

SUZY - (Friends With Dignity) - $53.00 rounded up to $55.00 +$5.00 (redistributed) = $60.00 (c£31.00)

THE DUKE - (Centre For Eye Research Australia) - $46.00 rounded up to $50.00 +$5.00 (redistributed) = $55.00 (c£28.50)

All donations already made and receipts received. And I've even worked out the higher amounts I'll allocate next year (costa living, you know?) and how much I have to set aside each week so there's a pot of moolah at the end of the season all ready and waiting.

Sussex - please let Sarah, Graeme, Jed & Stewart know I'm coming for them next year!!!

Thanks everyone for your commitment this year and you can all start your pre-season training now. Meanwhile, Tim and I and maybe even Duke are keeping a close eye on the trade period (Oct 7 - 16) prior to the AFL Draft which takes place on Nov 20 and 21 - by all accounts it's going to be rich pickings this year!!

message 795: by SussexWelsh (new)

SussexWelsh | 7448 comments I'll pass that on, Val. Now that Jed's over in Oz he has no valid excuse not to join in.

As ever, thank you so much for your generous donations.

Thank you once again for running yet another smooth operation and for your continuing generosity Val. Looks like i did alright for my charity this season! :)

I await impatiently for the new season..but in the meantime i am following the ladies season...currently on week 7 of 10. And i'm doing rather well on the tipping, I'm top of the ladder of a another YT based group i also partake in.

With regards to the trading season, i see that GWS have lost these players to other clubs: Isaac Cumming (Adelaide Crows), Nick Haynes (Carlton Blues), Harry Perryman (Collingwood Magpies), so far. No new players announced as of yet, that i can see.

message 797: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments We (the Bombers) may be gifting you Jake Stringer - 43 goals this season but with questions over his physical preparedness and his commitment/ability to put in for four quarters. He is very mercurial - which means some amazing goals but also the perception of lack of effort at crucial points in a game.

message 798: by theDuke (last edited Oct 15, 2024 10:11PM) (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Issac Heeney of the Swans was also in the frame at one point...but i don't think we'll get him, more's the pity. Stringer isn't written in stone yet, but Stringer might be a nice addition if it comes off.

message 799: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Finally, I receive a new post. First time since the GF. Think I was being told to stay away for a while!

I do not believe the Swans will be very active this year. Look like losing Parker but that was always on the cards after the mixed season he had. Looked great once back but his suspension for his disgraceful tackle in the VFL cost both the Swans and him a lot.

message 800: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Have to start planning on what membership I take out next season. Pointless continuing with my Victorian membership so will see what the Swans can offer.
I have taken out a Queensland Reds membership for the first time in 6 years which seemed appropriate as living here now but they are losing players all over the place. No idea what is happening there.
