The Background:
Sled dog racing is a winter dog sport most popular in the Arctic regions of the United States, Canada, Russia, Greenland and some European countires. It involves the timed competition of teams of sled dogs that pull a sled with a musher (the driver) standing on the runners. The team completing the marked course in the least time is deemed the winner.
The Iditarod is the most prestigious sled dog race in the world. The annual event takes competitors about 10 days to traverse two mountain ranges, the frozen Yukon River and treacherous Bering Sea ice, often in blizzards or subzero temperatures, before ending in the old Gold Rush town of Nome.
In 1925, The Great Race of Mercy gained notoriety for its critical role in delivering medicine via sled dog during the Nome diphtheria epidemic. Sled dogs were brought out of near retirement when all other transportation routes failed to deliver the much-needed serum to Nome’s sick and dying children, including air transport and railway. Today, the Iditarod commemorates this event, Balto (the lead dog) and Leonhard Seppala (the musher) who delivered the serum. (Although, Togo was the true lead dog!)
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is one of Alaska's iconic winter events, and the excitement traditionally starts in Anchorage on the first Saturday of March each year.
