A couple of things to keep in mind:

✸ Communication is key. Please make sure to check in regularly with your team.

✸ Let your team know if it looks like you won't get your review posted by Thursday, 11:59pm. You do have all of Friday to submit your review, but it can be intensely frustrating for your captain if they don't know when or if they can expect your review before the deadline.

✸ If you know beforehand that you won't be able to read and review a book during a certain week, you can request a pre-arranged absence from me, either by posting the request in the discussion thread or by sending me a pm. The request has to be submitted before the team rolls for the week in question, can only be approved by me as the mod in charge of running the game, and has to state a reason for the absence. (Reasons for pre-arranged absences can include e.g. going on vacation or work trips, planned hospital stays, exam period, etc.)

✸ If you do not have a pre-arranged absence and won't be able to finish your book in time for an unforeseen reason, please let your team know as soon as possible. If the team has earned the free pass, it can be used to cover the missing review. Without a free pass, the team has to sit out the next roll.

✸ We all know that real life gets in the way sometimes, be it through family emergencies, work emergencies, natural disasters, technical problems making it impossible to get online, or in other ways. That being said, please do keep in mind that this is a team challenge and your team relies on you to do your part unless an emergency occurs.

✸ If you find that the pressure of keeping up with the pace of the game gets too much for you or you wish to stop playing for any other reason, you can drop out of the challenge at any time. In that case, please let your team captain and/or me know that you wish to drop out rather than just disappearing without a word so your team won't be penalized when you fail to turn in your review. Thank you!

Captain's Handbook

✸ The team's captain is its chief organizer. This includes rolling the dice, posting the team's new spot to the team thread and the Post Your Spot thread, collecting links to team members' review posts in a single post to be linked in the Post Your Spot thread, doublechecking that books and review posts comply with requirements, reminding team members to post their reviews in time if necessary, etc.

✸ The captain may delegate some tasks, such as rolling and posting the new spot to the team thread, to another team member if they so choose. (Either a designated roller who fulfills this role every week, or whichever team member is online first once rolling is possible.) Collecting reviews into a single post and posting to the Post Your Spot thread should always be handled by the captain.

✸ Instead of having everything handled by a single team captain, teams can also choose two co-captains to handle the workload.

✸ Selection posts are not strictly required by the game's rules and I won't be checking for them. It's up to the team captain to decide whether they want them.

✸ If the team captain requests a pre-arranged absence, it's their responsibility to arrange for another team member to step in as temporary captain.

✸ The team captain is my primary point of contact for the team and should allow receiving private messages.

I would prefer not to be captain, but I can if no else wants to volunteer.

FYI: I do prefer selection and completion posts if I do end up being captain.

Also do we want to pick a name or just stay team 5?

Looks like we'd all prefer not to. XD
Would be great if you're willing, though!

I'm generally very much pro team name. Unfortunately I'm also suffering from a distinct lack of creativity right now. Anybody got ideas?

message 13: by Shan ~A~ (last edited Apr 04, 2024 09:27PM) (new)

Shan ~A~ | 1226 comments **VERY IMPORTANT**
A team CANNOT advance if all the reviews are not complete and in by the deadline. Reviews are due at the latest by end of day on Friday - 11.59pm Central Time. Without a free pass to cover a review still missing by deadline, the team will have to sit out the next roll. That being said, players should have their reviews in on Thursday as your team captain cannot roll until ALL of the team reviews have been posted.

❖If a player fails to have their book done two times throughout the game (excluding a prearranged absence) they will no longer be a part of the team.

✸ Prearranged absence must be requested from the moderator in charge by pm or in your team thread before the team rolls for the week you need to skip.

HOW TO PICK A BOOK:
✸ Books are based on the spot you're on, not the roll of the dice.
If you land on single digit spot, for example let's say you land on spot 5, then you have to read a book that's #5 in a series. For double digit numbers, for example you land on spot 48, you can read either a #4 or a #8 in a series.
✸ Standalone books can be used for a 1 or a 0
✸ First in a series can be used for a 1
✸ I don't expect anyone to read a series out of order and for people that don't read series books that still want to play there will be an alternate option. There will be an alternate option for each spot.
✸Half books: ½ or .5 count only if they meet the page requirement AND will be judged by preceding whole number numeral on Goodreads.
Example: Spot 8: A MacKenzie Clan Gathering (MacKenzies & McBrides, #8.5) would count for spot 8 because it meets the page limit.
✸ Books in multiple series can be used for ANY of the series. An example: Azagoth (1001 Dark Nights, #6; Lords of Deliverance, #5.5; Demonica, #10.5) can be used for spot 6 for 1001 Dark Nights, spot 5 for LoD or spot 10 for Demonica because it meets the page limit.

FREE PASS
✸ Teams will have a chance to earn 1 Free Pass to roll. To earn your free pass your team has to complete their reads a day before the next roll (i.e. 11:59pm Thursday). Once your team has done this you will have 1 free pass. The free pass will allow a team to roll if they are missing a review(s) before the cutoff. Once you've used it, you can't earn another one. It's a one-time shot. NOTE:
✸ The free pass may not be used for the win.
✸ If the player whose review the free pass is covering for has already previously missed a deadline, they must submit the missing review within one day after the deadline if they wish to retain their place on the team.

BONUS POINTS: 4

✸ One point can be earned for reading three or more books in a series.
✸ One point can be earned for reading a book with >500 pages.
✸ One point can be earned for starting and finishing a series. There must be at least 4 books in that series. Series + spin-off totalling ≥4 books also counts. For series with >9 books, point will be awarded for reading books 1-9. For still ongoing series, all books published to date (OR up to #9 in longer series) must be read.~ No re-reads on this one.
✸ 2 in 1: One point can be earned for reading a book that fits both the series number and the alternate for the spot you are on.
✸ One point can be earned for never picking a book from the alternate list. This point is awarded when your team rolls past 90.
✸ One point can be earned for always picking a book from the alternate list. This point is awarded when your team rolls past 90.
NOTE:
✸ Each point can only be earned once per team.
✸ The series-specific bonus points (3 or more books/ starting and finishing a series) must be two different series.
✸ Single book bonuses (>500 pages/ 2 in 1) may overlap with a series bonus.

How to use bonus points:
✸ Bonus points can be added to your roll to move you further along the board. Each bonus point can only be earned once and spent once.
✸ Bonus points may be used for the win. Example: Your team rolls and lands on spot 97. Your team has earned 4 bonus points. You can use your bonus points to move to spot 101 and compete for the win.
✸ You don't have to use all your bonus points at the same time.
✸ You can also use your bonus points earlier in the game. Example: Your team has earned 3 bonus points. Your team rolls and lands on spot 88. A team member doesn't have a book that is either #8 in a series or fits the alternate. They do however have a #9. Your team may decide to use 1 bonus point to move to spot 89 and have 2 bonus points remaining for later use.

✸ Re-reads are allowed ( ~EXCEPT on Winning Spots, no re-reads to win)
✸ Page limit: min. 140 pages
✸ When using an anthology you may use any of the numbers in the book except for the .5 since this means ½. But you must review each story in the anthology. The same applies to short story collections.
✸ Series # will be based on how GR has it listed.
✸ Comics, graphic novels and manga don't count for this challenge
✸ Deadline cutoffs are based on US Central time zone

Review:
After absolutely falling in love with Rowland's gorgeous A Taste of Gold and Iron last year, I promptly went to see what else they had written (you know, as one does). A Conspiracy of Truths is a rather different sort of book, and while it didn't turn out to be another instant favourite, it was certainly an engaging, well spun tale. Human nature, the powers of storytelling, and the ability to use the latter to manipulate the former are some of the main ingredients of this intriguing novel, along with a cast of complex and in many cases morally dubious (at best) characters. I rather suspect a copy of its sequel will be included in my next book order.

Review:
When I started reading, I was immediately intrugued by Magna Viri, the exclusive academic society, and the gothic dark academia vibes of the story. The plot is quite surprising and unique in many ways. I don't read much YA and tend to be bored by the genre, but this book was a positive surprise. I did not like most of the characters, and I don't care for insta-love, but other than that this was well worth the read. That cover is absolutely gorgeous!

review: I've started this series and really enjoy it. I didn't mind skipping to book 8 even though I 'm not quite there. Riley and his son Jake have been in some of the other books but it's nice to get their story. A heart warming story about truth, adversity, life's struggles, hope and love! Looking forward to reading more about the characters in Whiskey Creek.

Review:
Completely nonsensical. Dull. Repetitive. The writing was juvenile. Lady Tremaine, the Evil Stepmother, sounded like a teenager. Her transformation made no sense. The ending (heck the whole book) was bizarre. I hate the fairies and witches. Everything that happens is because of them. They add nothing and detract from what should be the villains' stories.
There's a decent story in here somewhere, it's just well hidden.

Review: I love that for the first time in this series it was a guy getting the job at the Busy Bean.

Zara basically asks him is going to be like the other (The Busy Bean Curse) and fall in love and leave them. He of course says no because he is not looking for a relationship.

Too bad he didn't see Heather coming.

Heather comes to town because she is being threatened for testifying against a corrupt politician, one she looked up to prior to what happened for her to have to be a witness in his trial.

I really like how the author dealt with the issues that affected her due to this.

I will say that I wanted to kick Mason's butt a bit toward the end, because men can be so stupid.

But overall, I loved the relationship between her and Mason. I am hoping that somewhere there is a book with Heather's brother and Mason's sister.

The beginning of the book was good. I liked the premise, a solar storm knocking out the electricity worldwide, and the writing style spiced with dry humor, just the way I like it. The author clearly knows his stuff and this reads like it should be made into a movie, which it probably will be in the future. My expectations were too high, though. The story is exciting and I liked many of the characters, but the ending felt just too easy. Rupert Friend narrated the audiobook, he was a pleasure to listen to.

This book was fun and super easy to read. The murder wasnt totally forgotten about like ive seen before when romance is thrown into the mix. I overall enjoyed it and would recommend.

Task: Series book #1
Book/Author: Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score
How it fits: 1st in the Knockemout series
# of pgs: 572
Finished: 02/26
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Lucy Score has this amazing ability to make me laugh out loud when I least expect it.

Naomi comes to Knockemout at the request of her sister and ends up in a situation that she wasn't expecting but shouldn't have been surprised by due to her sister Tina's past behavior. She also ends up losing somethings but gaining more than she bargained for.

Knox comes on the scene highly pissed because he thinks Naomi is her sister and he completely goes off on Naomi. After he realizes his mistake, he backs off on that issue, but he's still an as to Naomi.

In this case it reminded of a little boy that likes a girl but pulls her hair instead of just saying that how he feels. It's a good thing we get this story from both prospectives, because I'm not sure if I would have like Knox otherwise.

Knowing what's on his mind helped me understand him better but didn't make the things he said okay. And I say the things he said, because his actions were at odds with the words coming out of his mouth.

I am anticipating the next books in the series because Nash and Lucian.

review: Another interesting book in the Whiskey Creek series. Novak adds a dash of suspense to this story which I enjoy. She does a great job of tying all the characters together and then creating a story for each. I enjoyed the romance between Adelaide and Noah.
