Finished The Silver Bone by Kurkov. It's an easy read, a bit on the humorous side and pretty light. The seeds of a second volume are definitely there at the end, so I will be picking up the next book when published. I have a particular fondness for this author after reading his book Grey Bees, which I loved.

Leigh Bardugo returns to the Grishaverse with a duology on the multi-talented, silver-tongued Nikolai Lantsov. I really liked Nikolai who had been introduced in Siege and Storm and provided much needed humor. Because of my curiosity about his future, I skipped past the Six of Crows duology which is set between Alina Starkov's trilogy and Nikolai's novels.

I've finally reread all of the Lord Peter Wimsey novels leading to Gaudy Night, the book I'd actually meant to read and which I started last night. I couldn't really remember what had gone on in the series to that point, prompting the reread of them all.

I should do that. I haven't read any of them, and only one or two Wimsey short stories, since the '80s.

They're fun, although Sayers can drive a person crazy sometimes. In Have His Carcase it's with an in-depth explanation of how a certain code works; The Nine Tailors bogs down with technical know-how of bellringing. So far Gaudy Night is very different in tone than the previous books.

I recall as a teen (early 20s?) really liking The Nine Tailors in spite of all the bell-ringing information. Reading it was also the first time I saw a reference to the Spanish Influenza.

I haven't read these books in a long time but I LOVED them. Among other things, I liked that Harriet had spirit.

They've been a lot of fun, but I do cringe at the use of racial epithets in her books. Out of all of the series, Gaudy Night seems to have the most depth.

Prussian Blue by Philip Kerr

Bernie Gunther #12. I've been reading this series in order because I'm a big fan but this is the weakest entry I've read. Takes place half in 1939 and half in 1956.In 1939 Bernie is tasked to find the murderer of a highly placed Nazi and in 1956 he is tasked to kill a woman the East Germans/Nazis want dead. The problem for me was that the hunt for the 1939 killer is almost completely taken up with the various impediments the Nazis place in Bernie's hunt for justice. And the 1956 half book is almost completely taken up with Bernie's flight to avoid becoming a murderer. The book is slow and rather boring. Only 2 stars.

Goyhood by Reuven Fenton

Mayer, an Orthodox Jewish Talmud Scholar, discovers that he's a 'fake Jew'.....and is desperate to remedy the situation. This debut novel is funny and heart-warming, with a bit of thriller thrown in.

Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling

When climate change has caused mass destruction to the environment, a plan is under way to build a habitat in northern Canada. Interesting protagonists in this character driven plot.

The story is okay, but the theme of global warming is worthwhile. 3 stars
