Ready for a new read in 2024? Need to reduce your Want-To-Read Bookshelf too?

This game is a fun way to choose your next great book. Let someone else do it for you! Here’s how to play:

1. Look at the latest message. Browse through their Want-To-Read list and select a book.
2. Reply to the message with your book choice, tell why you chose that book, and indicate you are ready for your new assignment too.
3. Check back for the next message, which should provide your book assignment.
4. Read the assigned book and repeat steps 1 to 4.

Remember, only post when you are ready for your next read. This game is a great way to find new books that you might enjoy, reduce your own TBRs, and make new GR friends too.

Ready, set, relay!

We kick off this year's relay with Lina's newest post:

"Pony, I am glad you enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird - even though it wasnt what you were expecting :)
For your next read, I pick The Fellowship of the Ring, because going on a journey in Middlearth sounds like a good way to start off the new year!
(Happy New Year 2024 to everyone by the way!)
I am looking forward to hearing what you think (it has been a very long time since I read those books - I am looking forward to a reread at some point soon)

Whoever picks for me, please pick from my Want-To-Read-List here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Thanks! :)

message 3: by Carrie (last edited Jan 01, 2024 11:29AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 5 comments Lina let's start the year off with a nice classic for you, Wuthering Heights I gave this book 5 stars and have read it twice.

Please pick from my winter 23-24 list
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 4: by Rowiey (new)

Rowiey | 133 comments Carrie for you I pick Frostbite as im guessing you enjoyed the first book of the series... im interested in reading that series myself.

Next person please pick from this shelf

message 5: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Pony Xaviors, Echo Boy was excellent, just what I needed right now, thank you!

Rowiey, Station Eleven is one of my favorite books, I hope you like it.

Next player, please pick from my on-deck shelf here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 6: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (riareadstoomuch) | 216 comments Cheryl, for you I choose The Earth Is Painted Green: A Garden of Poems About Our Planet. I love the illustrations on the cover, and I think it's a perfect book for the TBR Revival Challenge :)

To the person choosing for me: please pick a book from my up-next-list.

message 7: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Miriam, the poetry book is fantastic for all ages, I recommend it, and I thank you.

I don't know what the books on your shelf actually are, as the only language I know, I'm ashamed to admit, is English. But I chose the one with the highest rating: Mensch, Erde! Wir könnten es so schön haben.

Next person, please pick from my on-deck shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list....

message 8: by Rowiey (new)

Rowiey | 133 comments Cheryl, I feel I might of enjoyed Station Eleven better as a book but I felt it was very confusing for an audiobook as it was all over the place.

For your next read I pick; The Antique Cat because i like cats

Next person please pick it for me

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 158 comments Rowiey, I see you have a lot of classics on your book list. I read a lot of classics too! So for you I pick Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - I read this last year in 2023. I had really enjoyed it too! The book has a few surprises in the plot and the story is easy to read.

Next person please look here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 10: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 87 comments Sarah, for you I pick A Cat's Guide to Bonding With Dragons - purely because that title is awesome!

Next person please pick from my Owned-TBR shelf, but not a Shakespeare because I have those already scheduled.

message 11: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Turns out I don't have access to Antique Cat so I am ready for another pick.

Brittany, I love what I've read of Shaw, so I pick for you Pygmalion.

Next person, my preferred shelf is this one: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list....

message 12: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 158 comments I have finished the book that Brittany chose for me: A Cat's Guide to Bonding with Dragons and I rated it 3 stars. It was a fun lighthearted book about a cat who goofs up the Dragonsbonds Academy by bonding with a dragon. The problem is he still thinks + acts like a cat! Not exactly funny but very entertaining. Lots of battles and action plus a nasty warlock too.

Cheryl, for you I pick The Best of World SF: Volume 2 The Best of World SF Volume 2 by Lavie Tidhar because I enjoy reading both fantasy and sci-fi. Hopefully you will enjoy this!

Next person, please pick a book here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 13: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 44 comments Hi Sarah,

Sorry it took so long for someone to choose you a book. I had fun looking at your ‘to read’ list and narrowing it down to a few to choose from. It was hard to choose and honestly I want to suggest all 5 I narrowed it down to.

Ultimately for you I choose Tigers Curse by Colleen Houck. A friend recommended it to me and I enjoyed it more than I initially thought I would, then read the whole series. It’s a fun, easy read. I hope you enjoy it also.

For whomever picks my next read- please choose from one of the following shelves:
2024 to read
2024 NEWT options
Purchased in 2023 not read yet
Own this On kindle, have not read yet

Happy reading!!

Lindsay

message 14: by Sarah (last edited Feb 16, 2024 06:39AM) (new)

Sarah B | 158 comments Tiger's Curse is not on the list I gave you. You are supposed to chose from my "kindle" list. And you didnt. My kindle list is either books I own or else they are those Kindle Unlimited books. That book you chose is not a Kindle Unlimited. 😐

I dont know why I wait so long to play this game + then people do not follow instructions. 😥

This is bogus.

message 15: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Sarah, for you, from your kindle list, I pick Colony One Mars.

Lindsay, for you, from your newt (?) list, I pick The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, especially if you can get the audio narrated by Patrick Fraley.

I am ready for a new book from my '... on deck ebooks..."
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I believe we are now caught up and straightened out.

message 16: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 44 comments Hi Sarah-
Sorry for the confusion in your most recent message it did not give any directions for which list to choose from so I missed the request.

Best of luck

message 17: by Tony (new)

Tony (flintflash) | 48 comments Hi Cheryl!

Interesting list to choose from :) For you, I chose:

Morris Is a Cowboy Morris Is a Cowboy by Bernard Wiseman by Bernard Wiseman

I like westerns and childrens books so here is the BEST of both worlds...lol! ENJOY!

For me, please choose from my "Ready to be Read" list
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Thanks!

message 18: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Morris Is a Cowboy is funny, short, and, unfortunately, dated. Good rec, though, thanks!

All Quiet on the Western Front is a gorgeously written classic about, obviously, a very tough subject. I highly recommend you read it next, Tony.

And we're back to my '... on deck ebooks...' shelf for my next book:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 19: by Débora (new)

Débora | 416 comments Hi Cheryl!

For your next read, I'm thinking Daughters of Earth and Other Stories. It seems a interesting collection of short stories. If you say it was good, I might try t find it here to read myself too.

Please, to select a book for me go into my shelf "Available Now"
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Thanks!

message 20: by JoJo_theDodo (last edited Mar 02, 2024 09:02AM) (new)

Debora - For you I pick https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1.... I recognize the author, but I'm sorry I do not speak/read spanish so I'm hoping based on knowing of the author this is a good pick for you.

Thank you!! : )

message 21: by Rowiey (new)

Rowiey | 133 comments Sarah, thank you for picking Rebecca i did enjoy it though i think the film is better.

JoJo, i got to page 18/60 and spotted The Secret Garden - i very much enjoyed this book so hopefully you will also!

message 22: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo Rowiey, Thank you for picking The Secret Garden. I really did
enjoy it!

For your next read I will pick Remarkably Bright Creatures I really enjoyed this book and I hope you will too.

For the next person choosing please pick from my Rec List:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 23: by Tony (new)

Tony (flintflash) | 48 comments Cheryl, THANK YOU for the recommendation "All Quiet On the Western Front". I like a read that really "punches you in the gut". I enjoyed the book.

JoJo_the DoDo, I choose for you The Searcher by Tana French The Searcher by Tana French. I found this a fun read and she has just come out with a sequel, so this should get you ready for that...lol.

For my next book, please choose from my "Ready To Be Read" list https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... Thanks!

message 24: by Marla (new)

Marla | 37 comments Thank you, Pixiegirl105, for the recommendation to read The Spirit Thief (The Legend of Eli Monpress, #1) by Rachel Aaron . It was mostly enjoyable though a bit slow in the middle, but now that the scene is set, I've got high hopes for the rest of the series. I love the characters and that is what I enjoy most in a series.

Tony, I choose Dune (Dune, #1) by Frank Herbert for you since the 2nd movie just came out. Dune isn't my kind of book, but I have many friends who love epic fantasy that love it. I just saw the first movie and enjoyed it.

Next person, please choose from my on-deck shelf

message 25: by Chaela (new)

Chaela (thelittlestmermaid) | 52 comments Hi Marla! For you I am choosing A Long, Long Sleep :)
I remember really enjoying this book when I read it forever ago, so I would be curious to hear your thoughts.

If the next person could choose from my kindle tbr shelf it would be greatly appreciated

message 26: by Marla (new)

Marla | 37 comments Thanks Chaela, I forgot that was even on my pick shelf.

message 27: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I very much enjoyed Daughters of Earth by Judith Merril and am trying to find more by her.

Chaela, Down with the Prince looks like an awful lot of fun; I hope you enjoy it!

Next person, please pick from my on-deck shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list....

message 28: by Rowiey (new)

Rowiey | 133 comments JoJo, thank you for picking Remarkably Bright Creatures, at first i thought it was rather boring only really enjoying Marcellus parts but around the middleish i started to understand and enjoy it, i actually cried when Tova finally pieced it together!

Cheryl for your next read i pick; Mrs. Easter and the Storks since its almost easter

For my next read please pick it for me

message 29: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thanks! Mrs. Easter and the Storks was silly and old-fashioned, but I'm glad I read it. Of course, since it's only a picture-book, I'm ready for a new selection....

Rowiey, I gave How High We Go in the Dark four stars; I hope you like it too.

Next person, please choose from my on-deck shelf:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 30: by Zeljka (new)

Zeljka | 498 comments Cheryl, I saw some interesting books on your shelf, but this seems really special: Drawing the Line: Science and the Case for Animal Rights. Hope you like it :)

message 31: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo Zeljka wrote: "Cheryl, I saw some interesting books on your shelf, but this seems really special: Drawing the Line: Science and the Case for Animal Rights. Hope you like it :)"

Hi Zeljka, Did you have a certain shelf you want the next person to pick a book for you from? I notice you're currently reading seven books so I wasn't sure if you were wanting someone to pick a new read for you?

message 32: by Zeljka (new)

Zeljka | 498 comments JoJo_theDoDo wrote: "Zeljka wrote: "Cheryl, I saw some interesting books on your shelf, but this seems really special: Drawing the Line: Science and the Case for Animal Rights. Hope you like it :)"

Hi Ze..."

Hi JoJo, I always read many books at once, some take me few days, some months, so just ignore it :)
You can choose from my want to read shelf, I don't have a special shelf for this relay. Thank you:)

Mary, if you would like to participate in this relay, you must first pick a book for the last posting, then request a book for yourself from one of your folders. Please read message 1 for more details. Thanks!

So I took a glance at your To Read list and found one of my favorite books in the magical realism genre is Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

I really liked this book and hope you will too!

For my next read please pick from my Rec Books shelf:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 35: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (riareadstoomuch) | 216 comments JoJo, for you I pick Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. It is one of my absolute favourite books of all time, and the film adaptation is probably the most accurate I have ever seen. I'd love to discuss it with you afterwards, if you like. I think you will either love it with all of your heart, or you will absolutely hate it. I'd love to hear what you think about it.

To the person choosing for me: please pick a book from my up-next-list.

message 36: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo Thank you Miriam for picking Perfume for me. I started reading the book and paused on reading it to watch the movie and went back to complete reading the book. I can't say it's a favorite for me just because I found it to be so disturbing, however the writer's way of detail descriptions really brings the settings alive. You can really smell the scents and visualize the characters.

For you I picked Emma by Jane Austen: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

There are several movie adaptions of the book that would pair well with the reading. Hope you enjoy it!

Could the next bookish friend please pick from my Rec Book Shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 37: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Zeljka, Drawing the Line: Science and the Case for Animal Rights was a bit dated, but interesting, thank you.

JoJo, I enjoyed The Maid even though I don't like mysteries. The main character is just a wonderful person. Friends in my real-life book club like it, too.

Next "bookish friend" please pick *two* books from my on-deck digital shelf, https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... (I need two choices because somehow it seems that the books, all too often, somehow become unavailable. If they are both available I'll read them both. :)

message 38: by Débora (last edited May 20, 2024 10:23AM) (new)

Débora | 416 comments JoJo_theDoDo, I enjoyed reading a Meg Cabot book! I think the last time I read one of her books it was during the pandemic lockdown. Thank you for that pick, I laughed a lot!

Cheryl, for you I pick Mystery of the Witch Who Wouldn't and Elizabeth and Her German Garden. I hope you liked my picks!

For the person choosing for me, please pick from my available now shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 39: by Marla (new)

Marla | 37 comments Thanks for the pick, Chaela. I finished A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan

First half was slow and I would've DNFed except I don't DNF. The 2nd half was much more interesting and I enjoyed the end. This would've worked for a retelling. Rose's extreme non-confrontational behavior irked me. Rose's parents shocked and disturbed me. I didn't know what this was about and wasn't really in the mood, but the end was interesting. This book would actually be a good discussion book for a YA book club.

message 40: by Marla (new)

Marla | 37 comments Débora, I pick Yona, The Girl Standing in the Blush of Dawn, Vol. 4 for you.

Friend, please pick a book from my Challenge list

message 41: by Tony (new)

Tony (flintflash) | 48 comments Marla, for you I pick Exit Strategy by Martha Wells
I am enjoying the Murderbot series also.

For me, if the Chooser could pick from my https://www.goodreads.com/review/list... Thanks!

message 42: by Débora (new)

Débora | 416 comments Marla, thank you for choosing Yona! I watched the anime and I really liked, the manga was on my shelf for months! Can't wait to get the others editions to read.

Tony for you I pick The Shining. I read it 2017 and loved it! I hope you like it too!

For me, please choose from my Available Now shelf : https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Thank you!

message 43: by Rowiey (new)

Rowiey | 133 comments Debora, for you i pick Jane Eyre as i rather enjoyed it and hope you will to!

For my next read please pick it for me

message 44: by Ali (new)

Ali | 155 comments Rowiey, let me just tell you how much I like your list. I've almost given you 3-5 final options to pick from, but my final-final pick is Greek Lessons. I haven't read this one, but Han Kang has not disappointed me yet, so I hope you'll enjoy it.

Next person please pick from my evergrowing tbr pile

message 45: by spoko (new)

spoko (spokospoko) | 516 comments Mod
Ali, I pick The Secret History for you.

Next person, please choose for me from my list of books by authors I haven’t read.

message 46: by Marla (last edited Oct 04, 2024 10:29PM) (new)

Marla | 37 comments Finished Exit Strategy, another great Murderbot story, but they are just too short. It was great to see the gang together again: Murderbot, Dr Mensah, Ratthi, Pin-Lee, and even Gurathin.

Next friend, please pick a book from my Challenge list

message 47: by Rowiey (new)

Rowiey | 133 comments Marla you forgot to pick a book for spoko

message 48: by Marla (last edited Oct 05, 2024 09:54AM) (new)

Marla | 37 comments Sorry, spoko, I fell asleep mid-task. The Left Hand of Darkness is also on my TBR, so that's what I choose for you. (I wanted to choose The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle which I plan to read in the next year or so, but I didn't want to assign you 600 pages of reading.)

Next friend, please pick a book from my Challenge list

message 49: by Rowiey (new)

Rowiey | 133 comments I didnt understand Greek Lessons in the slightest and so didnt find it enjoyable
