Monica and I are reading the fifth book in the Sword of Truth series and just passed Ch. 19... For some reason the author has decided to send us into a country where there is slavery... I am extremely sensitive to the theme to begin with, but this author is way too good at describing horrible people doing horrible things and then making the victims become horrible and perpetrate evil themselves... I don't know why exactly, but it is getting me soooo f-ing upset, I can barely think and just feel like crying! I don't know where the plot is going, but it is definitely affecting my mood in real life...
How do you guys deal with these types of situations???

I quit?...
I mean... the last time we tried to Buddy Read these a few years ago, I quit after book 2, I think, when the MC dude was raped and tortured for awhile... wasn't 100% loving the series anyway, and comments online implied I wasn't gonna suddenly start liking them more, so I just bowed out...
In a more helpful solution: when I really want to read something, and know it's gonna be grimdark by my current standards (pretty much anything by Jonathan Maberry these days), I try to sandwich it around some cozy reads to prep me and get me out of any resulting funk...

Sounds like time to DNF.
I've not heard good things about that series in general. I guess you're hitting that area.

The cozy sandwich sounds nice, I will definitely do that. I actually started it, then got upset and fit Honor Harrington after 15 chapters... I think I need to find something else nice we are reading after chapter 30... And maybe go that way every 15 chapters or so...
I don't know why it gets me so upset... It feels like the author's main goal is to make us feel dirty and hurt on the inside, but just for the sake of upsetting us... There really are much better ways to make the same points he is making, without traumatizing us as readers. I know artists who paint disturbing art, because it provokes strong feelings in the observer. However, if the canvas upsets you, you can move away from it... With a book, particularly a long one, you are stuck in that hell until the author decides to release you... This is why I think the idea of breaking it up with fluff is a good one...
Thank you guys!
What are we reading this month that is light and fun?

If you need to squeeze in a Cinnamon Bun 2, lemme know ;)

I'm gonna read Yard Birds today, Choko... SORRY... I mentioned them last week in a few places... been on my TBR awhile, and I had spare Hoopla credits, and I'm basically all caught up for the month again...
Only thing I'm behind on is Empire of the Damned, which I read a chunk of last week... 2/3 of the rest of my BRs this month I'm saving for work reads... last one isn't until the 30th... thinking of starting Kushiel's Chosen, tho, as a big tome on April 1st I wouldn't mind getting a headstart on to keep April manageable...
Yard Birds will be quick reads (if you decide to join)... they're novellas... Crazy as a Loon is 4hrs, and Dead as a Dodo is under 3hrs... and they probably fit your cozy read seeking goals...

Where are you reading Yardbirds, Iain? Here or in the mystery thread?

We can/should discuss in the Mystery thread, since I mentioned over there last week... there'll also be mild connections to Black Hat Bureau I'm sure...

But yeah if its too much without any other kind of merit I would DNF too. Ive avoided that series because of reviews mentioning that

Oh, I'm so sorry you're finding yourself reading this kind of book/scene. It really just take a mixture of a certain theme, a writing style and a frame of mind and wham! Bad book feelings :( It sucks that the author is taking you hostage with these scenes to get to the rest of the story.
Like the others, I would put the book down and move away from it, but I can understand that you're not able to do so. I used to not be able to DNF any book/series as well. I used the cozy reads sandwich method in the past, it works pretty well. If a particular moment/chapter is too difficult for me to handle, I read summary of it and skip it. I don't like doing this but honestly, there's not much of a difference between that and reading it while feeling sick 'cause I would retain nothing anyway so... *shrugs*

Cozy sandwich idea is a good one though... Not sure if it's cozy, but I've been looking forward to picking up the next Dungeon Crawler Carl, though a few days late...

And now spoilers... (view spoiler)
The completionist in me makes me want to read everything with even a small crossover...
Updated my spreadsheet for April, all the changes that have happened recently... additions and delays... total isn't too bad... January numbers, basically, instead of February/March... hopefully manageable...
There's always something else enticing on the BR list...

It's probably a bunch of group members competing for library loans... feels like it, sometimes...

Though I've noticed... if there's a long line, they're really good about getting another license... even if it's an old book. Like, they just added another license for God Emperor of Dune yesterday...

Yes! Both Felina and I have subscribed to their library--they have a MUCH better SFF selection, pretty fast wait lines, and 20 Hoopla borrows...

I see... Thanks for the information! I think I'll reread Threadbare #1-3 and Small Medium, then move on to Blasphemy Online. I really liked Threadbare & Small Medium back then, so rereading sounds nice :D

Noobtown isn't wowing me so far... and I bought so many of them on sale last year each month...
Switching to Beware of Chicken for some comfy re-reading...

Oops, I somehow didn't see this. I think you have a lot more BR planned than me, so I'll adapt to your schedule :) I'm up for it whenever you are

Aaaah, that sucks :(
Finished my reread of Beware of Chicken... so good...
But, I noted a couple things on re-read (altho I've forgotten half already)
Most notable/recent, is how weird it feels that Rags and Loudmouth never get real names... everyone just refers to them as that, even themselves during their own mini-POVs, after Tigu names them that... it's almost like the book is written by Tigu, who is horrible at keeping track of real names and just gives everyone nicknames...

No idea... that was the best answer I found, altho there was some confusion if it was talking about audiobook 4 or Royal Road volume 4... audiobooks 2-3 were volume 2... volume 3 still needs to be adapted...

Now I have the super hard task of picking my next cozy/light/fun read... Currently eyeing Cinnamon Bun, Dungeon Crawler Carl and Beware of Chicken. Decisions decisions.....

If you read Cinnamon Bun, we can turn 2+ into a Buddy Read since I got these guys to read #1 last month, and I haven't read 3-5 yet...
If you start Dungeon Crawler Carl, we're reading #5 in a few weeks, and we've all read Beware of Chicken already, I just finished a zoomy re-read...
They're all great, tho, in their own ways...

@Narilka: I haven't started yet. I should be able to read #1 in a week-ish. Let's read #2 together!
Get ready for foot stuff... lots and lots of foot stuff (I'm over-exaggerating... a bit... there's a voice, tho, on audio... fetish voice
