I finished a very good Historical Mystery, Death in a Blackout
by Jessica Ellicott. Book one of the series. I like her Beryl and Edwina series quite a bit. I like the story about women were trying to do help out the war effort in Britain in 1940. I want to read Book 2.
Currently reading Them Without Pain #7 of a series but fine as a standalone read. Ticks all my boxes - 19th century-tick. A page-turning mystery - tick. Interesting characters - tick. Enjoying it so far....thoughts to follow.
Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
Reread this Austen classic after ages as I had a retelling coming up. A good experience, as always. Austen is amazing!

Just finished a short cozy mystery set in Regency era :Petteril's Thief
by Mary LancasterIt's the first one in a series by an author well known for her historical romances and historical mystery-romances.
No romance here, only a cozy mystery but the premises lead me to believe that in the future there will also be a pinch (very little) of romance.
Here is my 3 stars review :

I read Arctic Blue Death by R.J. Harlick It is a cozy mystery set in Nunavut, Canada Both my wife and I recommend this series. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Maplecroft by Mary-Clare Terrill
A dual timeline novel, with the historical timelines based on actual love letters written by the author's great-grandparents to each other. This is what made me give the novel a go. The historical timeline makes it a good read.

Just finished a nice and sweet regency novella :Vienna Wolfe
by Mary LancasterHere is my review :

I completed The End of Everything
. Katie Mack explores many theories and science in a whimsical way. She outlines how our universe may end. All theorical, of course, but what it tells me is this. With all our science, our measurements, our theories, the more we learn, the more we discover there is much we do not understand. This was a fun deviation for me from fiction.
This Motherless Land by Nikki May
A loose retelling of Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park', but works much better if you don't read it as a retelling.

Just started
. This is non-fiction but the first two chapters are as engaging as fiction. I am hooked by the premise, which is that roles have switched - pre 16th century - women provided free medicine and doctors were looked on with suspicion. Then a switch occurred where doctors were still likely to kill you, but you paid money to have them do it...and so successful was the subterfuge that women healers were discredited. Phew! And that's just chapter two...
Finished Doc by Mary Doria Russell. The first in a 2 book series about Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers prior to the shoot out at Tombstone. Set in Dodge City, Kansas after the American Civil War. Rated 5 stars. Put this right up with Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry as one of the best novels about the American West.Link to my review:

Not my usual fare but I really enjoyed David Grann's totally engrossing non fiction account of the shipwreck of The Wager in 1741 and its aftermath. If you enjoyed Killers of the Flower Moon give this a try.
The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grannreview: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I read Robert B. Parker's Someone to Watch Over Me by Ace Atkins I rated it 4 stars. It is almost as if the plot was ripped from the headlines, with a Jeffrey Epstein type abusing underage girls with the help of a woman recruiter. I am using my library to read some books in series that I enjoy reading. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Medieval mystery set in 1384 London, installment #7 in Crispin Guest series :Cup of Blood
by Jeri WestersonHere is my 4.5 stars review:

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore ~ 4 starsA twisty, atmospheric, dual time-line thriller that takes place in a remote section of the Adirondacks during the 1960 and 70s.

The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta von Trapp
A memoir by the woman whose life inspired 'The Sound of Music'. Recommended only to staunch fans of the musical/movie.

The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst
I had grabbed this before I learnt how much hype surrounded the book. Thankfully, it's quite nice, though not flawless. Good for an light and entertaining cosy fantasy read.

I do enjoy Andy Weir and James Moriarty, Consulting Criminal is no exception. This is a collection of three tales written about, and in the style of, the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. A delightful change of pace for the talented Weir!
My review of James Moriarty, Consulting Criminal
Finished Epitaph #2 Earp/Holliday by Mary Doria Russell. Historical fiction about the shoot out in Tombstone in the 1880's and the tragic aftermath that followed. Rated 5 stars. Link to my review. No spoilers just some of my favorite quotes:

I've finished Petteril's Corpse
by Mary Lancaster. It's a cozy mystery set in regency era England.
Here is my review :

I recently listened to the audiobook of The Girl in His Shadow, the first of a series by Audrey Blake. It's a woman-ahead-of-her-time book, set in England in the 1840s. My short review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Historical cozyI finished Murder at the Mortuary by Lee Strauss book 5 of the series. It is 1924 and Ginger is driving all over London. Fun series. I like the undertones of acceptability of women's roles changing. You have Ginger's Grandmother stuck in the Victorian/Edwardian ear and Ginger being a modern woman. I will continue with the series.
Egypt's Golden Couple: When Akhenaten and Nefertiti Were Gods on Earth is what I am currently reading. Debating on Helen of Troy or Her Lost Words: A Novel of Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley next.
Finished Shadows in Bronze by Lindsey Davis. # 2 in her Marcus D. Falco HFM series set in Ancient Rome/Italian states. First half very slow, second half had better pacing and more interest. Not a favorite series, read for the summer TBR challenge.
Rereading Mistress of Rome
by Kate Quinn I gave this 5 stars ten years ago. A good time to reread this series
I read Celestina's House by Clarissa Trinidad Gonzalez It is literary fiction, set in the Philippines. I rated it 3.5 stars rounded up. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished A Murder in Time #1 Kendra Donovan by Julie McElwain. Dual time line historical mystery. Features a female American FBI agent who inadvertently ends up in Regency England. Rated 3 stars. Will probably continue the series. Just a note that this gritty novel features torture and rape.
The Trial of Mrs. Rhinelander by Denny S. Bryce
A book based on the actual Rhinelander vs. Rhinelander case in 1925 in the USA. Would have worked better for me if it actually focussed more on the legal proceedings than staying put on the outside of the courtroom.

I finished reading Voyage on the Great Titanic: The Diary of Margaret Ann Brady, R.M.S. Titanic, 1912 and starting Ready Player One
The Wicked Lady by Elena Collins
A dual-timeline novel with the historical part focussing on an actual 17th century woman who was a highway robber. Worth a read for her story.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Maria: A Novel of Maria von Trapp by Michelle Moran
A good option for fans of 'The Sound of Music, as long as you don't mind your hearts breaking.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
read First Frost by Craig Johnson It is book 20 in the Longmire series, which both my wife and I recommend. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...One of the two timelines is set in 1964.
The Smuggler's Escape
by Barbara MonajemMy 3 stars review here :

52* F this morning. I do not look forward to winter. Reading Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir. After our second British Isles cruise, I am reading English related books that I own,
The First Ladies by Marie Benedict ~ 2.5 starsA look at the friendship between First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune, was was called the "First Lady of the Struggle". Their accomplishments were remarkable, however, I found the book to be repetitive and lacking in forward momentum.

Pick Your Potion - an entertaining short story collection by Australian indie author Ephiny Gale
I had fun reading this!

Now that the Olympics are over (for a bit!!), I can get back to serious reading business. It's too hot to go out, so reading it is. Working my way slowly thru the Summer TBR list and discovering that many of the titles on my TBR list were initiated by my job (previewing YA/MG and some Adult books for readers' advisory). Now that I'm retired, I'm finding that I can cull some of those titles off my list and only read those that really pique my interest. Recently finished Hardscrabble by Sandra Dallas - a MG historical fiction. I really like her adult HF and this was comfortable and familiar. Recommended for kiddos (and adults!) who are fans of the Little House books
Feral Creatures of Suburbia by D. Liebhart
One of the best indie novels I have read in a long time. Great use of the triple narrative voices.

And doesn't it feel good to "downsize" our TBR list!
Finished Tidewater: A Novel of Pocahontas and the Jamestown Colony by Libbie Hawker. Rated 5 stars and on my favorite shelf. Am on a roll...3rd book I've read for the summer challenge that were 5 star reads!Link to my short spoiler free review:
