I like short stories, especially those that have a connection, so I enjoyed Winter Lights by Deborah Jenkins. These take place in Sussex, UK, at Christmastime, with characters ranging from old-money posh to an Indian migrant running a restaurant.

I enjoyed Detective Zoe Mayer's latest murder investigation with her service dog, Harry, aka The Good Dog. I'm sure he is one of Simon Rowell's most popular characters. What's not to love?

I have enjoyed all of Jeffery Deaver's books with Lincoln Rhyme and Ameila Sachs. Lincoln is a paraplegic and Ameila is became his wife during the course of this series. They solve crimes in New York City. Excellent Thriller.
August 25, 1983 is a surreal short story by the Argentinian master, Jorge Luis Borges. A dream within a dream? Read it - it's intriguing!

King of Scars Leigh Bardugo returns to the Grishaverse with a duology on the multi-talented, silver-tongued Nikolai Lantsov. I really liked Nikolai who had been introduced in Siege and Storm and provided much needed humor. Because of my curiosity about his future, I skipped past the Six of Crows duology which is set between Alina Starkov's trilogy and Nikolai's novels.

This children's picture book about a resourceful young Syrian refugee boy was originally an award-winning short film. Adnan: The boy who helped his mummy remember by Mark Arrigo retells the story for kids with atmospheric artwork.

Northernmost Peter Geye 03/18/2024Peter Geye is a terrific writer. His stories are loosely based on history. This is the third book in the Eide Family Series. Each story is tied to the others, but not in a repetitive way. This book goes from current times (2017) in Minnesota USA to the past (1897) in Norway. In this third book, Odd Einar Eide is examining his life while trying to survive being left in the glaciers after his partner was killed by an Ice bear. In Minnesota, his great great great granddaughter trying to survive a marriage having fallen out of love with her husband. It's not hard to see how these two survive their struggles. All three books are tied to the Gunflint trail area of North Shore of Minnesota.

Police Procedural
Good mix of police investigation and the personal lives of the investigators.
This book is expertly written and extensively researched, Millard's introduction of Arab, African, Asian and European peoples converging in East Africa, their politics, customs, and histories were all laid out satisfactorily without it being tedious, not to mention the vivid descriptions of the vast and varied land and its abundance of exotic floral and fauna. It was bolstered by firsthand accounts from Richard Burton, an ethnologist and explorer who was as equally fascinating as the cultures he studied. A dangerous and thrilling place that didn't suffer fools gladly (I'm looking at you, John Speke), and that served as a proving ground for European explorers to test their manliness and defend their easily wounded pride (see Liz Lemon eye roll below).

This was a first rate mystery thriller, at one point, listening to the audiobook - which is the best way to read this one btw, it's a full cast w/ sound effects, the whole nine yards - I caught myself thinking it was real, like I was really listening to a true crime podcast.
