PamG (lynguy1) | 1025 comments Here is my 3.87 rounded to 4 stars review of The American Daughters The American Daughters by Maurice Carlos Ruffin by Maurice Carlos Ruffin:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Historical Fiction / Coming-of-age
Gritty and Compelling
Key Point: The story line spends a significant portion of it depicting Ady in her childhood. While this helps readers understand Ady, the book synopsis indicated to me that it would mainly be about her activities with the Daughters.

Sam and Julia: The Mouse Mansion

We love the short stories about the little mice, Julia and Sam, in this book. 🐭🐭 They live in a big dollhouse, which is shown on the back of the book and in detail within the stories. We also have the figurines too, which make the reading come alive.

Angela M I read American Mother American Mother by Colum McCann . Brutal and gut wrenching , but out of grief can come good. The story of James Foley, an American journalist who was beheaded in Syria in 2014. His mother Diane tells the story in connection with one of my favorite writers, Colum McCann . Difficult, but important to read . 5 stars . My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Rosalyn | 66 comments Colossal effort and care was put into chronicling this colossus of American industry, an engaging and insightful read that reveals the man behind the curtain. Chernow neither villainizes nor sanitizes Rockefeller's character or ascent to supremacy in the oil business, through the author's expert guidance, we clearly see the building blocks to his success, whether it be the circumstances of his childhood that propelled him away from what he was escaping, or his natural traits and Puritan work ethic that drove him towards wanting and acquiring more and more.

Thanks for posting about this. I have read most of McCann's books and I think he is an amazing writer. He seems to be equally skilled in several different genres. I have just ordered this one from the library. Have you read his book 'Apeirigon' ? It is about 2 men who have both lost a child in the fighting, one Palestinian, and one Jewish. Very moving.

I can appreciate the amount of research the author must've done to realistically weave entomological and gardening info throughout the book, and the humorous inner dialogue of our main character made me laugh out loud at parts. However, the buildup to the horror was too slow, it was only at 50% when any progress on the plot was made, and even then, the reveal was predictable and anticlimactic.
