But for Moana, there are some Polynesian myths that the story was based on. I am not sure where people categorize mythology and religion type stuff.

I actually liked Moana - but I may be biased, since my daughter was a member of a ballet company and they did a production of it. The songs are definitely catchy!

The last Disney movie I was vaguely the right age for was The Little Mermaid, and when the kids came along Disney movies were so very expensive we couldn't afford them, so had to rely on video gifts from family members. they mainly focused on the classics. The kids are now 21 and 24...So I'm really behind with disney movies!

For a retelling of Mulan, I really recommend this book:Let Me Be Frank: A Book About Women Who Dressed Like Men to Do Shit They Weren't Supposed to Do.
My justification is "cross-dressing for great causes". Very powerful.

Thank you for the suggestion, Richard. My library has a copy, so I'm reading it also. Goodreads has some reviews that are not very supportive of it, but I'll give it a read and judge for myself.

I can't do a fantasy retelling or anything with Disney with Pocahontas as I consider it wrong with their strange romance version for a gang-raped, kidnapped victim who was traumatized until her death at 20,- so I sought out a non-fiction that is not too long, and was not unreasonably expensive to find! That was not an easy feat for the challenge. I just finished this one and thought I'd share for anyone else who were looking for non-fiction for this one for the poor woman - it is available on Hoopla free as an audiobook for anyone who uses that. Unfortunately under 200 pages and not professionally narrated, but most non-fiction is out of print and hard to find, or else weighty academic tones. Narration, again not professional, but it is an easy read and each chapter is broken up into different aspects of her story and life and is interesting, although of course very sad -

If anyone is having a hard time with a snow white retelling and does M/M Romance (I may have mentioned this already!?) --- this one has tributes to Snow White at the end with the mirror and spell and was a great book. I re-read it this year not realizing the Snow White reference until the end with the re-read

I still have a few selected for Retellings for other characters I am looking forward to. I have found through, so once I read them, if I enjoy, will share here for others.

I had done a lot of hunting at the end of last year for some of these for pre-planning and Pocahontas was the hardest for me to come up with something. I hadn't run across The Peacekeeper during my searches, looks interesting, hope you enjoy it.
Not a retelling, but I know a LOT of people are fans of C.J. Tudor and her new book has just been released. I had it come through off hold from library. It is tagged SNOW on page 1, so works for that prompt under "Snow White" and is in the 300's page range at 336
I still need a Snow White one so might do a reread of Megan Derr, who was one of the first MM authors I ever read back on Livejournal.

I had another book pre-planned there that was a random retelling but took it off when this one worked and have no idea what I was originally planning by this point with my memory.

Normally I would say that's fine, but this challenge has a 1 year re-read stipulation (not 6 months). I double-checked earlier because I'm rereading Thone of Glass with my husband and I realized I can't use any of them because I read them around 11 months ago!
