2024: (Impossible) Disney Challenge
Richard wrote: "Since I only like to read non-fiction, I'm not going to even try the re-tellings. Because nothing would fit."It's technically not non-fiction I think.. But for Moana, there are some Polynesian myths that the story was based on. I am not sure where people categorize mythology and religion type stuff.
Anastasia wrote: There would be non-fiction books that you could make fit I think."Thanks for the ideas. I've worked-out books for them.
I didn't have any idea what to read for The Princess and the Frog retelling, because I'd never seen it, so I remedied that last night 😆
Not bad! Not my favourite by a long shot, and the songs weren't really my cup of tea, but enjoyable enough.Guess I should probably watch Moana too one of these days. 😁

I actually liked Moana - but I may be biased, since my daughter was a member of a ballet company and they did a production of it. The songs are definitely catchy!
Sammy wrote: "Either way, I'm thinking MC that works with food would be good for a retelling!"
Absolutely!

The last Disney movie I was vaguely the right age for was The Little Mermaid, and when the kids came along Disney movies were so very expensive we couldn't afford them, so had to rely on video gifts from family members. they mainly focused on the classics. The kids are now 21 and 24...So I'm really behind with disney movies!
Just watched Moana. it was fun! And Dwayne Johnson's song is ridiculously catchy!
For the task involving shadows, do NYC's abandoned underground tunnels count? It's a main part of the culprit's schemes.
Sorry if this got answered earlier but for Lion King retelling can we do any hamlet retellings since it is based off that play. And for POLYNESIAN tag can we use Hawaiian?
So do I put bonus points as buddy read on the SS for the special bonus for May for Cameron? I put in a spot that it also fit but not sure how ot mark it

For any retelling task, if you can justify it, it's ok with me!
Maria wrote: And for POLYNESIAN tag can we use Hawaiian?"
Yes.

No, it needs to be a different word

The page points are the bonus. You don't get additional points unless you actually participated in a buddy read.

For the task "Read a book with a word related to "frozen" in the title (ie ice, cold)" - can I use a book with the word frozen in the title?

For a retelling of Mulan, I really recommend this book:Let Me Be Frank: A Book About Women Who Dressed Like Men to Do Shit They Weren't Supposed to Do.
My justification is "cross-dressing for great causes". Very powerful.

Thank you for the suggestion, Richard. My library has a copy, so I'm reading it also. Goodreads has some reviews that are not very supportive of it, but I'll give it a read and judge for myself.
Nanci wrote: "I'll give it a read and judge for myself."I hope you like it. Your experience may vary.
I was reading Goodreads announcements of new Summer Reads, and they showed an upcoming release that is based on Mulan in their words:https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/2...
The Night Ends with Fire
by K.X. Song
Based on the famous Chinese legend of Mulan, this fantasy adventure from author K.X. Song (An Echo in the City) follows a princess who disguises herself as a boy to enlist as a soldier. Complicating matters: a handsome prince-turned-fellow-soldier, an opium-addicted father, and a sea dragon spirit with its own mysterious agenda.
Release date: July 2

Sounds great! Might have to read this one!

I thought I'd update my spreadsheet and start entering my bonus points for the monthly bonuses, but the message came up as "protected cell". Are you going to be updating those on our sheets?
Nanci, the monthly bonus is page points, there are no additional bonus points. You get page points if you read for the Bonus Task
I can't do a fantasy retelling or anything with Disney with Pocahontas as I consider it wrong with their strange romance version for a gang-raped, kidnapped victim who was traumatized until her death at 20,- so I sought out a non-fiction that is not too long, and was not unreasonably expensive to find! That was not an easy feat for the challenge. I just finished this one and thought I'd share for anyone else who were looking for non-fiction for this one for the poor woman - it is available on Hoopla free as an audiobook for anyone who uses that. Unfortunately under 200 pages and not professionally narrated, but most non-fiction is out of print and hard to find, or else weighty academic tones. Narration, again not professional, but it is an easy read and each chapter is broken up into different aspects of her story and life and is interesting, although of course very sad -

Excellent Erin!
Excellent Erin!
If anyone is having a hard time with a snow white retelling and does M/M Romance (I may have mentioned this already!?) --- this one has tributes to Snow White at the end with the mirror and spell and was a great book. I re-read it this year not realizing the Snow White reference until the end with the re-read
Erin, I am going with a "retelling" as in an alternative history. The Peacekeeper - "Against the backdrop of a never-colonized North America"
Ashley wrote: "Excellent Erin!."
Hope it helps others on the hunt! I like to share retellings or, in this case, non-fiction accounts, to help out if I can recommend them for other readers.
I still have a few selected for Retellings for other characters I am looking forward to. I have found through, so once I read them, if I enjoy, will share here for others.
Lexi wrote: "Erin, I am going with a "retelling" as in an alternative history. The Peacekeeper - "Against the backdrop of a never-colonized North America""That's a good option as well, thanks for sharing that. I had done a lot of hunting at the end of last year for some of these for pre-planning and Pocahontas was the hardest for me to come up with something. I hadn't run across The Peacekeeper during my searches, looks interesting, hope you enjoy it.
Not a retelling, but I know a LOT of people are fans of C.J. Tudor and her new book has just been released. I had it come through off hold from library. It is tagged SNOW on page 1, so works for that prompt under "Snow White" and is in the 300's page range at 336
I still need a Snow White one so might do a reread of Megan Derr, who was one of the first MM authors I ever read back on Livejournal.
Lexi wrote: "I still need a Snow White one so might do a reread of Megan Derr, who was one of the first MM authors I ever read back on Livejournal."I had read most of the Dark books by her and they are all so different from each other, this one (Dance in the Dark) being my favorite, as well as the dragon one a few books later.
I had another book pre-planned there that was a random retelling but took it off when this one worked and have no idea what I was originally planning by this point with my memory.
Could I use this book for the 'Snow' tag? Tigers of the Snow: How One Fateful Climb Made The Sherpas Mountaineering Legends
It's not actually tagged 'Snow', but really should be. It's set in the snow & it's even in the title.
Question...If we re-read a book we already read and used at the beginning of the year (after the six months are up), would using them for a task be classed as a separate book, or as doubling up?
I have a few January re-reads coming up in July, so thought I'd better ask before using them for this challenge 😆

Normally I would say that's fine, but this challenge has a 1 year re-read stipulation (not 6 months). I double-checked earlier because I'm rereading Thone of Glass with my husband and I realized I can't use any of them because I read them around 11 months ago!

Ah sorry, missed that! I was looking at the standard rules. Not a problem. I'll probably be just about done by then anyway 😆
Ashley wrote: "If it's not tagged, you can't use it.... unless you tag it..."I don't know how to tag. That's ok, I'm not bothered by it.

Gah! I was so busy adding other things I forgot... off to do it now!
