I found a character name one too, so I'm good but thank you
Sammy,I love your sweet story about your daughter and her real live prince, Cameron! I adore a little girl with such moxie! So cool too that he narrated a book.
I love Eric Larson books, so that might be a possibility, but going to check my TBR list first.
Glad the choice was Eric or Cameron and not Ariel!
Ariel would have been much trickier! lol. Also just be glad it's Ariel she liked, otherwise the prince could have been "Charming"... Good luck finding something for that! 😆Glad people are finding books for the task. I wasn't wanting to make it too difficult! (And if you can't find anything, please direct your complaints to my daughter. 😆)
Just FYI - the page points for the "second bonus" by Sammy doesn't have the formula in it and so doesn't update with the points when you enter the number of pages.

Could I just make a..."yes i might like to do the challenge. How would I start from the beginning? Is there a thread with all the tasks?
Also I would colour code all my own spreadsheets and alternate colours on the rows with at least 14pts for the text. But since I'm a musician, i rarely use those things and it's been quite a few years since I've done them. I use a macbook.
Personally I adore spreadsheet based challenges, especially year long ones, so I want to chime in with a thank you for creating this one, Ashley. Have really enjoyed it so far.
I like the option of being able to join in with your very own thread you make yourself for those who don't want to do spreadsheets. And I am so grateful I don't work in an office. I think i'd go mad - I have a hard enough time with HTML! heh :)But I've only joined HOB about a month ago, so was probably too far behind anyway.

hey everyone! I've been super busy with work this week, but I promise I will fix the point issue by Sunday.
Jazzy, if you'd like, I can pm you the list of tasks on Sunday as well, or you can copy from my spreadsheet. Just let me know.

I'm with Erin! SS challenges are so much easier (and prettier!) than messing with posts, especially for the really huge challenges that would need several of them because of the character limit.I'm loving this one! Thanks Ashley 😁
And if anyone is worried about having Google link their SS to their email, you could always set up a "challenge email address" purely for that under whatever name you want and use that instead.
Thanks for all the kind help in here. I would need to know how to go about making my own thread as I don't see the option. Or maybe I just don't understand it! haha. For instance here is one of my challenge threads for a yearly challenge https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I have several of these in different groups, I like them because it's your own thread and people can comment if they want and you can design it with whatever photos you choose.
I don't understand spreadsheets, they seem to move around strangely and if the rows don't have alternating colours i usually get lost. But I seem to be lost most of the time! C'est la vie!
And when i use zoom then i can't find the right place on the page. If it's not at least 14pt i can't read it. For myself, a thread is better.
Thanks so much for all your hard work!
Are you using the SS on your phone? I'd hate that too. But then, I hate using my phone for most internet stuff, lol.Couldn't live without my PC! 😆
Just wondering if I can use
Sweet Briar Rose by Alex Smith for Sleeping Beauty retelling as title is her name. First victim is found wrapped in thorns

It's my macbook, lovely little thing I call Ziggy Stardust.
Might be an Apple compatibility issue then? Haven't used a Mac for years, so no idea how they interact with Google sheets.Maybe someone else has and knows how to help with your issues?

Rather than an 'apple issue' it's an 'autistic issue', I think! ahahaa
If there's something that 23 years married to an Aspie husband, and 21 years as the parent of an autistic son has taught me, it's that there's always a solution! The problem usually lies in figuring out where to look for it! 😁
(something that my menfolk with their out-of-the-box thinking are actually far better at than I am, lol)
Jazzy, I use a Macbook also. Here is what I do to make things a little easier for me. I go ahead and bookmark my spreadsheet and then just have to open it up when I want to add books to it. That way, I don't have to get into google and go from there each time. One thing that I've learned from Ashley's spreadsheets are they are very well done and you literally just have to plug in your book. I don't bother with linking my books on this one and just type them in manually. I usually do this every couple of weeks and just keep my books open on one tab and the spreadsheet open on the other. I also really like this spreadsheet challenge due to the fact that I don't have to duplicate my work. I've noticed lately that my patience wears thin when I have to put books on a spreadsheet and in a thread. I think it's going to keep me from doing challenges in the future because the extra work is quite tedious to me. I don't mind helping you navigate spreadsheets and your mac if you do decide to hang out. :)
Thanks but I do put all my books in a thread anyway, https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
and the spreadsheet doesn't have alternating colours for each row. It's far too white. and the print is not 14pt so is far too small. I can't use a finger and thumb to enlarge and move around.
Also I break my threads up with photos so I can tell where I am. And that's something you can't do on a spreadsheet.
But I want to thank you so very much for the time and explanation xx
Sorry for being a pain in the bum.
That'll be where I was getting confused... Last time I was near a Macbook they were still laptops! lol.Touchscreen stuff is definitely not my thing. But either way, there must be a way to make the print bigger?
And you should definitely be able to change colours on the sheet if you need that, unless Mac disables certain features in Google? I know I can do it very easily on my PC.
I see how you make your threads to fit your needs. You definitely have a great system and are way more detailed than I am in most of my threads. That takes a lot of patience to post your books like that. Great job!I don't have a touchscreen Mac so that would take me a little bit to figure out. There are ways to change the colors and size but it may be confusing to wiggle around on the touchscreen versus regular Mac. I've use a Mac for over 20 years and then use a PC for my regular job so I have lots of experience going back and forth but the touchscreen would be a new thing to learn.

It's not a touch screen and it is a 'laptop', just easier to call it a macbook. Great if i am travelling.
It takes ages doing all my books but I love my little threads xx
Erica wrote: "My tablet cuts off the B name for the extra bonus...?"It's Eric or Cameron - see post 289 for full bonus task instructions. :)
Do we have to stick with the given list for retellings? I found Cinderella Next Door and wondered if that would work for Cinderella retelling.

Mary Poppins

Must be completed between 1-Apr-2024 and 30-Apr-2024
Read a book with an umbrella on the cover
🔱🔱🔱ONGOING!!🔱🔱🔱

The 2023 (Impossible) Zodiac Challenge Winner was Sammy, and as the winner, she got to create a Bonus Task!

"When my daughter was little, she was, of course, Disney Princess mad and her favourite (then and now) was Ariel. When she was 4 years old, she packed her Disney Princess suitcase and demanded we open the front door for her, as she was off to find her handsome prince. The task: Read a book that has a character, author, or audio narrator named Eric Or Cameron (alternative spellings ok).
Last summer, 20 years later almost to the day, she finally married her handsome prince (Cameron, rather than Eric, but they have the same hair!)"
Book must be completed between 15-Apr-2025 and 15-May-2024
🐻🐻🐻UPCOMING!!🐻🐻🐻
The Jungle Book

Must be completed between 1-May-2024 and 31-May-2024
Read a book where some part of the book takes place in a jungle or forest. It can be a single scene, or the majority of the book.
Would you allow this for "underwater scene" on cover since the ship is largely underwater?
Also, I'm not sure how to mark my bonus points for books read, such as the Mary Poppins bonus, but I didn't read it as a buddy read.
Vicki, I will accept it.
The page points are the bonus, so you don't mark anything. You either read it and get page points or you get nothing! Does that make sense?

Three Wishes
Just based on the Precis (cause I haven't read it yet), I'm thinking this would qualify for a retelling of Aladdin?
Wyatt's life is turned upside down when the fiancee he doesn't love is kidnapped, and he's given an ultimatum: Steal the so-called "magic lamp" that Aladdin's lover, Jensen, never allows to leave his side or watch the woman die. It's a task he's pretty sure will take magic to to achieve--or possibly just an internship at Jensen's film production company will do. But what happens when Wyatt discovers just how magical that lamp really is?

Since I only like to read non-fiction, I'm not going to even try the re-tellings. Because nothing would fit.
Richard wrote: "Since I only like to read non-fiction, I'm not going to even try the re-tellings. Because nothing would fit."There would be non-fiction books that you could make fit I think. Maybe something on mining for Snow White, sleep disorders for Sleeping Beauty, exploration for Pocohontas, cleaning for Cinderella, antarctic exploration for Frozen etc.

Jazzy, you can of course make a thread, but if you want to be considered for points at the end, you'll need to keep your points updated.
I'm not sure what browser/system/equipment you use spreadsheets on, but it shouldn't be tiny, so maybe it's just a zoom issue, but you can't really mess up this spreadsheet, as all the formulas are locked and inaccessible to anyone except me. I am also able to reset anything you feel you mess up, so if that makes you want to try a ss, just sign up with the link. You can always choose to move to a thread if you think it's too difficult or frustrating.
