Where Does This Book Fit? the 2024 edition

I think someone said Tom Lake is about a 24 year old

Mel wrote: "Does anyone happen to know where I could fit Half-Off Ragnarok by Seanan McGuire?"- Magical realism
- might be a stretch, but some of the creatures sleep for months (more than 24hours)
- cozy fantasy?
- main character is 24 or 25 (can’t remember exactly)

Thanks Jen!
Alison wrote: "Any thoughts on what prompt might fit Nathan Hill's Wellness?"Hi Alison,
I was looking to find a prompt suggestion for this book as well. I am not too far into yet, hopefully something further in the plot qualifies it for a prompt.
I have been doing the PS challenge since 2016 and must say, it's getting harder and harder to complete each year. Every year the prompts get more specific and there are less "freebie" prompts where you can easily fit in a book that you naturally want to read.

^THIS! It's getting to a point where I'm just like "tell me what book you want me to read"
Rachel Anne wrote: "Does anyone have suggestions for "Postcards from the Edge", by Carrie Fisher?"Neurodivergent? It is semi-autobiographical and Carrie Fisher was bipolar which means her brain was not "neurotypical"
Gemma wrote: "Does anyone know which prompt The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer would fit?"Is London on your bucket list - otherwise I'm struggling. If you're also doing ATY, I used it for the Five Books List prompt - it was one of the funniest books of 2023.
Craig Gorvin wrote: "I’m reading Clytemnestra - Costanza Casati. Does anyone know if this fits into any prompts please?"A one word title you had to look up in the dictionary.

Perhaps Greece is on your travel bucket list?
I haven't read the book, but I know it's based on myth, so perhaps there are a few fantastical elements to the plot and you can say it's "magical realism"?

Thanks, I think the travel bucket list one is a good idea. As it happens, I'm going to Greece next month! I'll have to read this before I cross it off my travel bucket list!
Cathern wrote: "Would The God of Endings count as an unreliable narrator?"I don't think so, but I don't remember it that well. I feel like she's straightforward in what she tells us, it's just that she doesn't always have all the information.

could also possibly be genre you don't typically read, recommended by librarian/bookseller
Does If he had been with me count for the prompt where the char dies in the first chapter?? I mean I only read the first chapter so far.. and I have a feeling that he died based on the title and all… but he did not actually die in the first chapter.. they left us hanging….
So if anyone read this.. can u help me
Hey everyone! Can someone help me figure out if If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino works for any of the prompts for 2024?
Apoorva wrote: "Hey everyone! Can someone help me figure out if If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino works for any of the prompts for 2024?"
Any chance it's set in snow? (I don't know, I haven't read it.)

I wrote down that "If We're Being Honest" would fit one of the prompts, but now I can't find which prompt or list I found it recommended on. Please help, thanks in advance.
Kimberley wrote: "Where could The Defector by Chris Hadfield fit?"I haven't read it, but I did read The Apollo Murders, so I'm just going off of that.
-recommended by a bookseller (Canadian bookstores really hyped it since he's a Canadian hero)
-Is anyone in the book 42?
-Is it set in space? (A lot of the The Appolo Murders took place in space)
-Does it take place 24 years before you were born? I think it's set in the 70s.
I feel like this years prompts are overly specific. It’s only Feb and I’m already having trouble finding slots for books I’ve read. Any ideas on where to put Then She Was Gone? I already used 3 POVs and complete sentence. I’m not sure about unreliable narrator. Even if someone was deceptive in the story, they were open and clear about their actions and intentions to the reader.
Ariel, the website of the UK booksellers, Waterstones, has a 'Bookseller's Review' for this book from someone called Gemma in Waterstones' branch in Elgin in Scotland. Gemma said:“WOW”
Wow, what a clever, compulsive, dark and tense psychological thriller! Once you start reading this you will not want to put it down until you have devoured it all!....This book will break your heart into a million pieces, lots of twists and turn you don't see coming and a HUGE surprise at the end!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!
So you could use this for prompt 14: recommended by a bookseller.
I agree it's really hard to fit books into these prompts.

Doesn't appear so. But thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you! I found a bookseller’s recommendation for the book

I just finished Conviction would Anna fit as an unreliable narrator? If not, which category would you fit this book in?
Emerson wrote: "I just finished Conviction would Anna fit as an unreliable narrator? If not, which category would you fit this book in?"
No I would not count her as an unreliable narrator. You don't know Anna's whole story at first, but I don't think she's unreliable, we just slowly learn her background.
Looks like Mina is not a pen name, and she's not hearing or vision impaired. But GOOD NEWS!! I just sorted Mina's books by year and started counting, and Conviction was the 24th!!! (I counted each graphic novel as one, skipped the "preview" and the compilation and the translation)

I can't help with the second book, but The Color of Magic would fulfill both the space and dragon prompts if you want to double up.
Personally, I don't double up, but I know lots of people who do. It's entirely up to you.
does anyone have suggestions for where 'Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men' would fit? As it has been on some bestseller lists, I was thinking of 'recommended by a librarian/bookseller', but looking for alternatives.

No, this year's list is TOUGH. Any chance this is a genre you usually avoid? If you count the subtitle, it's more than 24 letters (but I never count the subtitles - it's up to you).

Has anyone read This is How You Lose the Time War? I can't tell if it would fit in a prompt based on the description.
Sabedra wrote: "Has anyone read This is How You Lose the Time War? I can't tell if it would fit in a prompt based on the description."Enemies to lovers
Takes place in the future
LGBTQ+ romance
Unreliable narrator (sort of)
Maybe sleeps 24+ hours, but can’t remember 100%

It also fits as a title that is a complete sentence.
does anyone know of any "classics" books which fit any of the briefs? excluding bildungsroman as I've completed that one. please and thank you :)
Ali wrote: "does anyone know of any "classics" books which fit any of the briefs? excluding bildungsroman as I've completed that one. please and thank you :)"
I'm not sure how you define "classic" and I of course don't know what you've already read.
I'm planning to read Frenchman's Creek for "about pirates" - does that count as a classic for you?
Treasure Island for sure is a classic about pirates (note that I did not enjoy that book!)
Animal's POV obviously could be Animal Farm, or Watership Down, or White Fang (one of my personal favorites!)
About a writer is wide open if you read a writer's memoir. Or you could find fiction like Little Women. Pen names are also wide open - SO MANY I won't even bother listing them. Same for "turned into a musical" and "collection of poems."
If you consider Agatha Christie a classic, then you've got "someone dies in the first chapter" covered. Raskolnikov commits murder in chapter 7 of Crime and Punishment, but that book is so long, it's practically the first chapter.
If you count Nabakov as classic, Lolita is an unreliable narrator.
Ethan Frome is set in the snow. I think Doctor Zhivago & Anna Karenina are also, but I haven't read them so I'm not certain.
There are many classic LGBTQ romances, including Maurice, The Price of Salt, or Carol, The Color Purple, The Well of Loneliness, Giovanni's Room (actually I'm not sure if that last one is a romance)
H.G. Wells set many of his books in the future. Similarly, Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four were set in the future.
