Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments You guys did a great job making sure your books are on your wheel shelves!

@Shan - I added 2 books from your wheel shelf: Soldier's Duty and So You Think You Can Marry an Alien - would you please add any of the letter options for the books to the planning sheet?

RachelG. | 339 comments I have 2 series set in Nashville, USA and can claim that city.

I put in a request at the library for a book set in Montreal but don't want to commit until I actually get it just in case it doesn't arrive in time for this round.

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Sounds great Rachel! A few people will need to do more than 1 city if we're going to get all 10 - and we WILL! :)

Why don't you pick 2 cities from Havana, Berlin, and Bogota to start?

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments NOTICE: ROUND 2 is live!

FYI - maybe if you don't have a city book immediately jumping out at you from your TBR, find a city on the list that you'd like to visit someday and claim that :)

We'll host a virtual pot luck midway through the round and you can all "bring" dishes from your city. (Or at least pictures!)

message 115: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Starting the Havana book today. I’ll update the spreadsheet later

message 116: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Going for Havana and Bogota for now. If no one has claimed Berlin after I'm done with those then I'll do Berlin.

ANNOUNCENT:
We've fixed the end time issue on our planning sheet, but because the captains didn't get everything checked in on time, we lost a few books from last round. We're sorry for that, and will make sure that doesn't happen again.

Apparently, there were similar issues for other teams, and because the scores are so widespread after the first round, the Mods are adjusting the bonus structure for round 2 only to better balance the game going forward.

Opportunity for Team R&B:

- our cover color bonus is maxed at 10 colour covers, so lets get 4 more white covers for the round
- once we get our 10 unique locations, we can get any city on the list up to 3 times

So, with Mary's 3 books, we just need one more unique city read so please check the list above and if you haven't claimed a city yet, please take one that doesn't have the green check and post your choice here. Once we get to 10 cities, the team can read for any city on the list up to 3 times.

We can do this Team and today is going to be a Lovely Day!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I also came across a Shanghai book that works for another team challenge. (I need a book with either a gift on cover or GIFT in the title). I'm actually going to listen to that next because I need the gift book done by Friday. Then I'll do Bogota and then Berlin if it's still needed. They're all books that interest me so no hardship.

ETA: finished the Havana book this morning.

The Mexico trip reduced my normal reading time for the 1st round. I'm fortunate in that I can listen to audio books a lot at work.

message 127: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3529 comments Joyce, can you add The Cat Who Saved Books to your wheel shelf when you get a chance? Thanks.

message 128: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I just finished the Shanghai book and am going to finish the Bogota book today.

message 129: by Mary X (last edited Oct 27, 2023 06:52AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Since we have our 10 unique cities, I might skip the Berlin book and read something for a city we already have.

Or is there a benefit to fill in all the cities?

Looks like we got the white cover bonus well covered.

RachelG. | 339 comments It looks like we have 10 white covers on the planning sheet so I am going to concentrate on cities once I finish the 2 books with white covers I am currently reading. Are there any letters we need to focus on?

Makes sense - I would say I, Y, and Z's are always good. We'll be able to better tell as we head into week 2.

Any city is good at this point - each is worth 5 points - so read the books you really want to read :)

We are doing amazing on the locations team!

message 134: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Can each city be read 3 times or only the first 10 unique ones we completed?

message 135: by Teddie (last edited Oct 27, 2023 08:23AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Mary X wrote: "Can each city be read 3 times or only the first 10 unique ones we completed?"

I read it that each city can be read 3 times, but there needs to be at least 10 unique cities to start - so any city can be read up to 3 times as long as 10 unique cities were read first.

I'm struggling with this book. A monotonous depiction of pre WW2 Berlin and boring, one dimensional characters.

RachelG. | 339 comments I haven’t had internet for 2 days and have been using my phone so I’m sorry if that is causing extra work for the spreadsheet. Hopefully we get internet back today.

Any letter we need to complete another word? I don’t have a book on deck so I am open to suggestions.

message 147: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I need to scope out new books so thank you for the list.

message 148: by Mary X (last edited Nov 02, 2023 06:25AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Not R&B but since this is a music themed game: Halloween night my friend and I saw Depeche Mode at The Garden in Boston. Wow those guys still sound fantastic and Dave Gahan was all over that stage and cat walk. Barefoot. I was jealous because I am recovering from multiple foot surgeries and a broken big toe.

There's nothing like the feeling of singing and dancing along to the same song with 20,000 other people.

message 149: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Kind of surprised Boston isn't on the city list: Aerosmith, Boston, Donna Summer, Leonard Bernstein, New Edition, Bel Biv Devoe, The Pixies, Drop Kick Murphys.

But I guess Boston didn't spawn a movement like grunge or something. Except for maybe Celtic Punk.

message 150: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments That sounds amazing Mary. I was going to see Depeche Mode in NYC with my brother, but plans fell through - too bad 'cause I Just Can't Get Enough! So glad you had fun rocking out on Halloween!
