Melindam | 8375 comments You know, I am determined that one of our next destination should be Edinburgh. Last time I was there was in 2011 and I am yearning to go back. :)

message 552: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments You absolutely should, just not right now because it's miserable weather, lol!

We've been talking about moving back to Scotland recently. My parents aren't getting any younger, and I'd like to spend more time with them. Of course, I see my family more often than my husband does his, and most of his live 5 minutes walk away 😂

message 553: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments You send word when the weather is fine. ;)

message 554: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments We're talking the UK here... it may be a wait 😂

Melindam | 8375 comments Next week I'll start a 500+ book (Sammy - it will be Charlie D's biography ;), but won't claim the spot just yet.

message 557: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments LEEDS in title... would that be the letters or the actual word. Because I already have to live there, I sure as heck don't wanna read about it too! 😂

woo-hoo! The Doctor Who wheel is up!

I've added the monsters to our sheet, so we can spin them in now :)
I guess it's dealers choice whether they respin the monster type just killed or the one we don't currently have any of.... if that makes sense? given we have a max of 5 monsters at a time

message 563: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Ohhh, I was planning to read Bonjour tristesse in a few days for #2! And I can also take #1 & #5

message 564: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Just realised, the book I'm reading for 1& 5 also works for 2 😂

Makes sense to me! I'd be tempted to spin dr. who instead of greek for a while, as we've done so many of the greek already with the TT and all.

I'd agree with the Dr wheel rather than Greek for a while.

Nothing I'm reading is hitting the slots on here at the moment - turns out finding things with U or V that also fit other tasks is beyond my brain.

message 568: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments My last 2 books (Scalzi and another one set in Detroit) do not fit anywhere either. Some wheels are stronger than others. ;)

message 569: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments unsurprisingly, I'm mostly in the same boat 😂

@Mel - does Starter Villain have a UKLE character?? #fingerscrossed

message 571: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10121 comments Mod
we need the group mind to find us a SE Asian book with an instrument on the cover!

actually, might go and pose that question!

message 572: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Cat,

there is an L character (Astrid L-something) for sure.

message 573: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments But no Us and I cannot recall E/K characters either.

message 574: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10121 comments Mod
Judith did make the sensible point that I can always carry it into the next round! I'm headless chicken at work, so having someone tell me to calm down was helpful!

but also: yay for Astrid L-something, in case I get gripped and rip through it!

message 575: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I found it super fun. :)

message 576: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments The first BOM I gave 5ish (4,5) stars. :)

message 577: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Grabbed the southeast Asia task, as I am reading a book set in Vietnam. won't be finishing it until wheel round 3 though, because it doesn't fit anything! 😢

message 578: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Penanggalan and behemoth are gone. To be replaced by...

Smaug (LOTR)

350-400
Red and gold on cover
book is about the last of something
Takes place on a lake
Author has a middle name/initial listed on GRs

Santu Sakai

500 to 650
Mouth on cover
Blood in text
Letters KL in title
MC is alone outside (not in a car)

message 579: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments I can do 1&2 for Smaug and 1-3 for Santu (possibly 5 also, but won't know until I read it!)

message 580: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10121 comments Mod
I could actually do all 5 of Santu with Loki's Ring. Put your long book where I have Loki's Ring currently slotted?

message 581: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Works for me 😁

message 582: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy, I started listening to Charlie's Bio and am enjoying it very much. :)

message 583: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments I thought you would 😁

I often struggle with thinking of what to recommend to specific people, but that one seemed like a great fit to me.

Love the book, but as YOU said: I wouldn't want to be Charlie D's friend, either. So, it's Mr Dickens to us both. :D

AKA, "Our UN-Mutual Friend"

Cat (cat_uk) | 10121 comments Mod
Finished Santu, got the farting Dr Who monsters

Raxacoricofallapatorian

message 586: by Melindam (last edited Nov 07, 2023 10:46PM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments My Dickens book can cover large family + politics and Soul Music can cover the page count

message 587: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Soul music also has calcium in the text "Precipitated calcium carbonate" pg 255 ;)

message 588: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Killed the Jersey devil and replaced it with...

Teke Teke

200 to 299
MC rides on a train
Cover shows half of something
Author's debut book
Title starts with TEKE

message 589: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Uncertain Summer by Betty Neels

Can this be considered half of the window pane? :)

message 590: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments I say yes, it's showing half of the one on the left. :)

👍🏻

Will put my UUUUU-book there with another Dutch-guy of unpronounceable name. 😂

message 592: by Melindam (last edited Nov 09, 2023 01:55AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Thank you Sammy (??) / Cat (??) 🥰 for slotting my Soul Music for calcium. I am in a bit of a antibiotics-based fog, so my brain totally let this crucial info pass me by.

But I laughed so much at Vetinari's preferring music "being read" as opposed to "being played". To quote Ridcully: "it is unhygienic" when played. 😅 I did not remember this bit at all. Will finish the book by tomorrow.

Also, finished the book about our "non-mutual friend" Sammy and loved it, despite his being a colossal Dick..ens quite a lot of the time. 🥰

message 593: by Cat (new)

I slotted it in following Sammy's heads up :)

message 594: by Melindam (new)

message 595: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Teehee, yes Dick..ens not the most charming man ever, but he wrote great books and makes for an interesting subject too.
Glad you enjoyed it!

message 596: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Yes, he was an extraordinary writer and person, when all is said and done. I will never warm to Great Expectations, though, whether it is his greatest novel or not. :) That was my 1st book by him and put me off of his other books for a decade. :D

message 597: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments I rather enjoyed it, but not as much as David Copperfield or Our Mutual Friend.

My first was probably Oliver Twist or The Old Curiosity Shop, I can't remember which (faaaaaaar too long ago 😂), though I took a 20-year-break about halfway through reading his novels for no reason other than "so many books, so little time", lol.

message 598: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13019 comments Also, I just finished a book set in Russia, in case you're not feeling the set in Russia tasks for Caucasian eagle. 😊

message 599: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments It was Dombey & Son that I finally picked up back then after the GE-hiatus which convinced me to try some more, followed by 2 other favs: Bleak House & Our Mutual Friend. :)
Then I conquered David Copperfield. And I should really pick up my next Dickens soonish. It may be Little Dorritt or Nicholas Nickelby. We'll see. ;)
